  • Recently, the necessity of accessing spatial data from remote computer via network has been increased as distributed spatial data have been increased due to their size and cost. Many methods have been used in recent years for transferring spatial data, such as socket, CORBA, HTTP, RPC, FTP, etc. In this paper, we propose spatial clearinghouse components to access distributed spatial data sources via CORBA and Internet. The spatial clearinghouse components are defined as OLE/COM components that enable users to access spatial data that meet their requests from remote computer. For reusability, we design the spatial clearinghouse with UML and implement it as a set of components. In order to enhance interoperability among different platforms in distributed computing environment, we adopt international standards and open architecture such as CORBA, HTTB, and OpenGIS Simple Features Specifications. There are two kinds of spatial clearinghouse: CORBA-based spatial clearinghouse and Internet-based spatial clearinghouse. The CORBA-based spatial clearinghouse supports COM-CORBA bridge to access spatial data from remote data providers that satisfy the OpenGIS Simple Features Specification for OLE/COM using COM and CORBA interfaces. The Internet-based spatial clearinghouse provides Web-service components to access spatial data from remote data providers using Web-browser.

  • Spatial multiuser access is investigated for the reverse link of multiuser multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems. In particular, we consider two alternative a aches to spatial multiuser access that adopt the same detection algorithm at the base station: one is a closed-loop approach based on singular value decomposition (SVD) of the channel matrix, whereas the other is an open-loop approach based in space-time block coding (STBC). We develop multiuser detection algorithms for these two spatial multiuser access schemes based on the minimum mean square error (MMSE) criterion. Then, we compare the bit error rate (BER) performance of the two schemes and a single-user MIMO scheme. Interestingly, it is found that the STBC approach can provide much better BER performance than the SVD approach as well as than a single-user MIMO scheme.

  • Role-based access control (RBAC) models are recently receiving considerable attention as a generalized approach to access control. In line with the increase in applications that deal with spatial data. an advanced RBAC model whose entities and constraints depend on the characteristics of spatial data is required. Even if some approaches have been proposed for geographic information systems. most studies focus on the location of users instead of the characteristics of spatial data. In this paper. we extend the traditional RBAC model in order to deal with the characteristics of spatial data and propose new spatial constraints. We use the object-oriented modeling based on open GIS consortium geometric model to formalize spatial objects and spatial relations such as hierarchy relation and topology relation. As a result of the formalization for spatial relations. we present spatial constraints classified according to the characteristics of each relation. We demonstrate our extended-RBAC model called OOGIS-RBAC and spatial constraints through case studies. Finally. we compare our OOGIS-RBAC model and the DAC model in the management of access control to prove the efficiency of our model.

  • Multi-dimensional data play a crucial role in various fields, as like computer graphics, geographical information system, and multimedia applications. Indexing method fur multi-dimensional data Is a very Important factor in overall system performance. What is proposed in this paper is a new dynamic access method for spatial objects called HL-CIF(Hierarchically Layered Caltech Intermediate Form) tree which requires small amount of storage space and facilitates efficient query processing. HL-CIF tree is a combination of hierarchical management of spatial objects and CIF tree in which spatial objects and sub-regions are associated with representative points. HL-CIF tree adopts "centroid" of spatial objects as the representative point. By reflecting objects′sizes and positions in its structure, HL-CIF tree guarantees the high spatial locality of objects grouped in a sub-region rendering query processing more efficient.

  • An efficient access technique is one of the most Important requirements in GIS. Using level -of-detailed data, we can access spatial data efficiently, because of no access to the fully detailed spatial data. Previous spatial access methods do not access data with level of detail efficiently. To solve it, a few spatial access methods for spatial data with level of detail, are known. However these methods support only a few kinds of data with level of detail, i.e, data through selection and simplification operations. For the effects, we propose a new spatial indexing method supporting fast searching in all kinds of data with level of detail. In the proposed method, the collection of indexes in its own level are integrated into a single index structure. Experimental results show that our method offers both no data redundancy and high search performance.

  • This paper presents the design and implementaion of an object-relational geographic information system. This system has been developed on top of a commercial object-relational database management system. It provides flexible spatial data model, spatial query language, visual user interface, and efficient spatial access methods(D0T) in which traditional primary-key access methods can be applied. We report on our design choices and describe the current status of Implementation. The conceptual model of the system is based on SDTS, and is mapped to the intemal obiect-oriented data model. • This paper presents a physical database design methodology for spatial access structures using transformation techniques in spatial database systems. Recently, many spatial access structures have been proposed in the literature. However, there has been no effort for their physical database design. We first show that most spatial queries in the original space are transformed into one type of range queries in the transform space, and then propose a method for finding the optimal configuration of spatial access structures by using the relationship between the shapes of query regions, that are correspond to the range queries, and page regions, that are correspond to data pages, in the transform space. For performance evaluation, we perform extensive experiments with the MBR-MLGF, a spatial access structure using transformation techniques, using various types of queries and data distributions. The results indicate that our proposed method builds optimal MBR-MLGF according to the query types. When the interval ratio of a transformed four-dimensional query region is 1 : 16 : 256 : 4096, the performance of the proposed method is enhanced by as much as five times over that of the conventional cyclic splitting method. The result confirms that the proposed physical database design methodology is useful in a practical way.

  • Recently, as the spatial information and various multimedia are fused together, the demand for the high value-added spatial information contents and the necessity of technology for spatial information security are increasing. However, since the current security policy is being managed independently by each system, there is a problem with unreliable or costly to modify or revise the security policy. Such problems occur frequently in the process of coordination or integration of the spatial information management systems that are used in public institutions and private companies. Therefore, in this paper, the access control system that could provide an integrated security policy for many spatial platforms and systems with expandable grammar and semantics was designed and implemented based on GeoXACML proposed by OGC. As the GeoXACML-based access control system designed and implemented in this paper follows the international standard specifications, it provides high portability and interoperability. Finally, in this paper, the efficiency of the system was proved by applying it to a virtual scenario on the military area requiring the access control.

  • Various air indexing and data scheduling schemes for wireless broadcast of spatial data have been developed for energy efficient query processing. The existing schemes are not effective when the clients' data access patterns are skewed to some items. It is because the schemes are based on flat broadcast that does not take the popularity of the data items into consideration. In this paper, thus, we propose a data scheduling scheme letting the popular items appear more frequently on the channel, and grid-based distributed index for non-flat broadcast (GDIN) for window query processing. The proposed GDIN allows quick and energy efficient processing of window query, matching the clients' linear channel access pattern and letting the clients access only the queried data items. The simulation results show that the proposed GDIN significantly outperforms the existing schemes in terms of access time, tuning time, and energy efficiency.

  • In this paper, we explore the utility of recently discovered multiple-antenna techniques (namely MIMO techniques) for medium access control (MAC) design and routing in mobile ad hoc networks. Specifically, we focus on ad hoc networks where the spatial diversity technique is used to combat fading and achieve robustness in the presence of user mobility. We first examine the impact of spatial diversity on the MAC design, and devise a MIMO MAC protocol accordingly. We then develop analytical methods to characterize the corresponding saturation throughput for MIMO multi-hop networks. Building on the throughout analysis, we study the impact of MIMO MAC on routing. We characterize the optimal hop distance that minimizes the end-to-end delay in a large network. For completeness, we also study MAC design using directional antennas for the case where the channel has a strong line of sight (LOS) component. Our results show that the spatial diversity technique and the directional antenna technique can enhance the performance of mobile ad hoc networks significantly.
