  • Anatahan Volcano in the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands (CNMI) erupted for the first time in recorded history on 10 May 2003. The underwater acoustic records of earthquakes, explosions, and tremor produced during the eruption were recorded on a sound-channel hydrophone deployed in February 2003. Acoustic propagation models show the seismic to acoustic conversion at Anatahan is particularly efficient, aided by the slope of the seamount toward the hydrophone. The hydrophone records confirm the onset of earthquake activity at 01:53Z on 10 May, as well as the onset (at ${\~}$06:20Z) of continuous, low-frequency (5-40 Hz) acoustic energy that is likely volcanic tremor related to magma intrusion. The hydrophone recorded a total of 458 earthquakes associated with the eruption. To predict the character of acoustic signals generated from Anatahan, we developed a moment-tensor representation of a volcano-seismic source that is governed by the geometry of the source and the physical properties of the magma. A buried magmatic pipe model was adopted, and numerically modeling source parameters such as the pipe radius and magma viscosity enable us to grasp the inward nature of Anatahan Volcano.

  • Recently in Korea, due to the significant drop of lead and bromine levels as a marker of autoemission source in the urban areas, the conventional application of receptor methods has many difficulties to properly apportion mass contribution of some sources. It is then needed to urgently develop alternative source profiles and identify new emission markers. Thus, the study has extensively examined the results obtained from using PAHs and elemental data for receptor modeling and has provided an opportunity to identify alternative source compositions and to determine a proper number of the ambient emission sources in Seoul area. The purpose of the study is to identify the sources of PM-10 and to estimate their mass contributions in Seoul area. Thus, a receptor model, target transformation factor analysis(TTFA) has been massively applied. The TTFA offers the possibility of determining the number of sources and their mass contributions. The input data used in this study are composed of two separate sets: fine (d$_{p}$ < 2.5.mu.m) and coarse (2.5.mu.m < d$_{p}$ < 10.mu.m) mode aerosol samples. Each sample was simultaneously collected by a PM-10 dichotomous sampler during the daytime(8 AM to 8 PM) and the nighttime(8 PM to 8 AM) from February to October 1993 on the Sungdong-Gu, Seoul. All the samples were analyzed to determine the levels of 10 inorganic elements by an XRF system as well as 14 PAHs by a HPLC. However, only 8 inorganic elements and 7 PAHs were used for the various statistical analysis.sis.

  • In this paper, a System Dynamics(SD) computer simulation model has been developed to assess the effects of developing and providing an alternate water source. A water service index was also developed to estimate the level of overall customer satisfaction on water supply service. Data from the Busan water supply service and the Korea Development Institute regarding the Nak Dong river bank storage development were utilized during the modeling processes. Some important indicators of the system under study were analyzed by the simulations of development of the alternate water source for Busan. The developed SD model and the water service index can be further utilized as a tool that can assess the extent and timing of an additional service improvement project.

  • Micro-source units having power ratings in thousands of watts can provide power quality with higher reliability and efficiency than the conventional large scale units. This paper develops switching level model of micro-source and studies the characteristics of the micro-grid consisting of multiple micro-sources and interfaced with electric power system. The developed model adopts the space vector PWM to fully utilize the capacity of inverter. The interaction of the grid connected micro-sources and the characteristics of the control system parameters are investigated. Micro-sources and micro-grid are implemented using PSCAD/EMTDC. Simulation results show that the proposed model is efficient for studying micro-grid system.

  • Inverse problem is very interest in the sciences and engineering, in particular for modeling and monitoring applications. By applying inverse problem, it can be widely used to exploration of mineral resources, identification of underground cables and buried pipelines, and diagnostic imaging in medical area. In this paper, we firstly consider 2-dimensional EM scattering problem and present the FDTD method to estimate unknown source. In this case, non-linear CGM technique is used to investigate unknown sources corresponding to measured data obtained from forward problem in near field. The proposed technique for solving the inverse source problem presents a reasonable agreement and can be applied to investigate an internal source signal of embedded security module.

  • Most research on the estimation of direction of arrival has been accomplished based on the assumption that the signal sources are point sources. In some real surroundings, signal source localization can more adequately be accomplished with distributed source models. When the signal sources are distributed over an area, we cannot directly use well-known DOA estimation methods, In this paper, we represent an source by the center angle and degree of dispersion. Then, we address the estimation of the elevation and azimuth angles of distributed sources based on the parametric distributed source modeling in the 3-dimensional space.

  • In this paper, we modeled the incident beam in order to analyze and evaluate the optical thin film device for wavelength division multiplexing in optical telecommunication network. As applied ray tracing method to the optical path, we were compared the accuracy of coupling efficiency simulated by two modeling methods. In the results of sinulation, ceil modeling method was preferred to annual modeling method in micro-optic device because of accuracy for coupling efficiency and Gaussian intensity distribution. In the results of optimal simulation for optical device using thin film filter, the distance (d1) between optical fiber and GRIN lens, the distance (d2) between GRIN lens and thin film filter and the coupling efficiency were 0.24 mm, 0.25 mm and -0.11 ㏈ respectively. As d2 was displaced at 0.25 mm and d1 was varied in order to evaluate the optimal value, d1 and maximum coupling efficiency were 0.24 mm and -0.35㏈, respectively. Then the results of experiment were corresponded to that of optimal simulation by cell modeling and it was possible to analyze the performance for optical device using thin film filter by the simulation.

  • This paper presents development of a three-dimensional marine controlled-source electromagnetic (mCSEM) modeling algorithm and its application to a salt and reservoir model to examine detectability of mCSEM for a reservoir under complex subsurface structures. The algorithm is based on the finite difference method, and employs the secondary field formulation for an accurate and fast calculation of modeling responses. The algorithm is verified for a two-layer model by comparing solutions not only with analytic solutions but also with those from other 3D modeling algorithm. We calculate and analyze electric and magnetic fields and their normalized responses for a salt and reservoir model due to three sources located at boundaries between a salt, a reservoir, and background. Numbers and positions of resistive anomalies are informed by normalized responses for three sources, and types of resistive anomalies can be informed when there is a priori information about a salt by seismic exploration.

  • In this study CALPUFF modeling was performed to establish a correlation between regions of frequent civil odor complaints near Gumi national industrial complex and odor-emission facilities of synthetic fiber manufacturers in the same area as main acetaldehyde-emission point sources. As a result of the CALPUFF modeling, the maximum concentration of acetaldehyde in Gumi national industrial complex was reduced from O ($10^{-5}g/m^3$) to O ($10^{-6}g/m^3$) upon improving emission facilities of T company so that the maximum concentrations of acetaldehyde frequently appeared in complex 3. In addition, the predicted range of the maximum acetaldehyde concentration in Gumi national industrial complex was also improved in comparison with that prior to improving emission facilities of T company. These maximum concentrations of acetaldehyde obtained to estimate the expected contribution of total acetaldehyde point source by CALPUFF modeling showed the similar values to those measured in 'HAPs investigation in the region of Gumi-Daegu' and were consistent to the trend of civil odor complaints. Therefore, the expected contribution of total acetaldehyde point source was validated. The relative contribution of T company upon improving its emission facilities was predicted to be lowered by more than factor of two, compared to that prior to improving its emission facilities. To the contrary, the relative contribution of W company upon improving emission facilities of T company was predicted to be increased by more than factor of two, compared to that prior to improving emission facilities of T company. This indicates that the contribution of aldehyde point sources of W company was relatively increased upon improving emission facilities of T company.
