  • This thesis is an experimental research of shear behavioral characteristics and shear behavioral coefficient of weathered residual soil which is mostly contained in soil of Korea. Using the weathered residual soil from mountain near Kangwon National University, this experimental research were contained the physical properties of sample in term of the basic test method such as specific gravity, plastic and liquid limit, grain-size distribution, density and water content. Experimental results obtained from direct shear test sand triaxial compression tests show that according to step loading, linear strain and linear stress increase continually and angle of internal friction decreases just little according to incresing of water content in case of ignoring the cohesion, and angle of internal friction appears the maximum angle near a optimum moisture content in case of considering the cohesion.

  • The various microbial tests were performed to determine bioremediation agent capacity for eight strains isolated from the oil contaminated regions. Two tests for isolated strains were conducted such as cell hydrophobicity and emulsifying activity. The biodegradation of SHM (saturated hydrocarbon mixture) and AHM (aromatic hydrocarbon mixture) with the strains also was carried out. The strains having higher cell hydrophobicity and emulsifying activity degraded petroleum oil effectively. The degradation capacity for SHM was represented more than 90% in YS-7 and WLH-1 of isolated strains, and KH3-2 were capable of degrading AHM. Especially, WLH-1 as yeast was shown more than two or three times in the degradation capacity of automobile engine lubricants and the biomonitoring results of contaminated soil for residual oil degrading test showed that the hydrocarbon biodegradation was increased in the second treatment by this strain.

  • Wastewater sludge and composted food wastes were examined as the alternatives of a landfill cover for soils to eliminate the emission of VOCs. The benefit of these alternatives is in their high sorption capacity, which is 5 to 50 times higher than natural soils. After sorption is finished, biodegradation is an important mechanism in decrease of VOCs concentration. In order to investigate appropriate VOCs degradation condition, biodegradation batch experiment is being conducted with isolated strain X9-c. Both benzene and TCE were degraded only in soil with 12%(water volume/sorbent volumn) water condition. When the water condition varied from 12 to 48% in compost, optimum water conditions of composted food waste was 36%.

  • This paper is results of numerical analysis on the behavior of colluvium slope with combinations of soil nails and earth anchors during excavation. In order to maintain the stability of the colluvium cut, being composed of gravel and boulder and thus local in stability being expected during slope cut, temporary reinforcing method of soil nailing with shotcrete might be used. Subsequent method of cast-in-place facing with earth anchors can be used to maintain cut slope stable permanently. For the cut slope where these methods had been applied, the numerical techniques were applied to their behaviors and investigate the stability of the slope. Limit equilibrium methods were used to confirm to maintain the slope stability during and after excavation and application of those reinforcing methods. Another numerical technique of FEM was also used to find the stress and strain as well as deformation distribution in reinforcing materials and slope ground during excavation.

  • If the temperature of free water drops below the freezing point the water turns into ice and its volume increases. Analyzing of the results in test, it is hoped that these is broadly used in engineering plan. The compressive strength of frozen soils and the unconfined compressive strength of the ice. The creep strength depends on factors including creep ratio, time, strain and temperature. For a linear decreases in temperature, strength predicts an exponential increasing. The relationships between dry unit weight and compressive strength, water content and freezing with compacted soil samples, have been analyzed to understand the strength of frozen soil. Therefore, it is thankful that the results of analsis shall find useful application as a framework for generalizing experimental information as well as a basis for solving various frozen soil mechanics problems.

  • To investigate the possibility of horizontal gene transfer between agricultural microorganisms and soil microorganisms in the environment, Bacillus subtilis KB producing iturin and the PGPR recombinant strain Pseudomonas fluorescens MX1 were used as model microorganisms. The soil samples of cucumber or tomato plants cultivated in pots and the greenhouse for a six month period were investigated by PCR, real-time PCR, Southern hybridization, and terminal restriction fragment length polymorphism (T-RFLP) fingerprinting. Our data from Southern blotting and T-RFLP patterns suggest that the model bacteria do not give significant impacts on the other bacteria in the pots and greenhouse during cultivation.

  • The results of an experimental investigation on the characteristics of compaction and compressive strength of polypropylene fiber reinforced soil are presented in this paper. This study has been performed to obtain the physical properties of PFRS(polypropylene fiber reinforced soil) such as strain-stress relationships, OMC(optimum moisture contents) and ${\gamma}$dmax (maximum dry unit weight), with four different contents (i.e., 0.1%, 0.3%, 0.5% and 1.0% weights ) of mono-filament and fibrillated polypropylene fibers. From the compaction test results, it is found that OMC increased with the contents ratio of fiber, but ${\gamma}$dmax decreased. It means that the improvement of the workability and the reduction of the weight of embankment structures by the asddtion of the polypropylene fiber. And, from the compression test results, it is found that the additon of the polypropylene fiber remarkably improved the compressive strength of PFRS. And it was observed in the viewpoint of strength that the fibrillated polypropylene fiber reinforced soil is more effective than the mono-filament polypropylene fiber reinforced soil.

  • Iln order to figure out criteria of bentonite for using as impervious material of waste landfill, laboratory experiments were performed to reveal the geotechnical properties of soil-bentonite mixtures such as compaction test, direct shear test, unconfined compression test, triaxial compression test, consolidation test and permeability test. The results of the study are summarized as follows ; 1. Based on the compaction test, optimum moisture content increased with the increase of bentonite content, but maximum dry density decreased. 2. In unconfined compression test, the maximum strength of the soil-bentonite mixtures appeared at 10% bentonite content. The correlation equation between stress($\sigma$) and strain($\varepsilon$) of the soil-bentonite mixtures is given by ; $\sigma=\frac{a\cdot\varepsilon}{\varepsilon^n+b}$ 3. In shear test of the mixtures. the shear strength showed an increasing trend with increase of bentonite content and the maximum shear strength appeared at 10% bentonite content. 4. In consolidation test, the coefficient of compressibility $(a_v)$$(m_v)$$(C_v)$

  • Digital simulation has recently become the preferred method for designing complex and dynamic systems. Simulation packages provide interactive, block-diagram environment for modeling and simulating dynamic models. The block diagrams in simulation models are flowcharts which describe the components of dynamic systems and their interaction. This paper is the first part of the study for determining the seismic behavior of soil systems. The aim of this part is to present the constructed block diagrams for discrete-time analysis of seismic site amplification in layered media for vertically propagating shear waves. Detailed block diagrams are constructed for single and multiple soil layers by considering wave propagation with and without damping, respectively. The block diagrams for recursive filter to model attenuation in discrete-time form are also constructed. Finite difference method is used for strain calculation. The block diagrams are developed by utilizing Simulink which is a software add-on to Matlab.

  • In this study, the full scale testing method of the geogrid-reiuorced soil Segmental Retaining Walll(SRW) under the simulated train loading were proposed in order to evaluate the applicability of reinforced soil SRW in railway embankment. The train loading was simulated by the design static wheel load and the impact coefficient due to the train passing velocity. This test was focused on the static performance of reinforced soil SRW in terms of the following measuring systems ; the horizontal earth pressure displacement acting on the facing block and the tensile strain along the geogrid. The data gathered from this full scale testing was compared with numerical analysis results by FLAC.
