  • This study investigated the effects of NPS(non point source) pollution reduction of sediment traps through field experiments. Various sizes of 4 sediment traps were applied in a upland field located in Gunwi and assessed the infiltration and storage effects as well as NPS pollution reduction effects of this technique. The characteristics of deposited soil in the sediment traps were also analyzed including distribution of particle size, soil texture, and chemical properties. The results showed that slightly different composition of soil particle size from each sediment trap with high proportion of 0.15mm and 0.25mm ranges of soil particle diameters, while the loamy sand is the main types of deposited soils in the sediment traps. Decreased NPS pollution were observed from the water quality analysis of the samples taken from the sediment traps. Further research need to be proceeded continuously to improve this technique in order to utilize on upland fields for management of agricultural NPS pollutions.

  • An experiment was carried out to find out the priming effects of rice seeds, Oryza sativa L. (cv. Ilpumbyeo) on. the seedling establishment and early emergence under excess soil moisture conditions. Seeds were primed by soaking in -0.6 MPa polyethylene glycol (PEG) solution at $25^{\circ}C$ for 4 days. The primed seeds were sown in soils with various soil moistures (60, 80, 100, 120, and 140% field capacity) at 17 and $25^{\circ}C$, respectively. Germination and emergence rates, plumule height, and radicle length of primed seeds were higher than those of untreated seeds at any soil moisture and temperature examined. The time from planting to 50% germination ($T_{50}$) of primed seeds was less than that of untreated seeds by 0.9~3.7 days. Germination rate, emergence rate, plumule height, and radicle length were highest at the soil moisture of 80% field capacity among the soil moistures. Priming effects of rice seeds on germination and emergence rates were more prominent under the unfavorable soil moistures (60, 100, 120, and 140% field capacity) than those under the optimum soil moisture condition (80% field capacity). However, priming effects on seedling growth were greater at near optimum soil moisture compared with too lower or higher soil moistures. Therefore, these findings suggest that priming of rice seeds may be a useful way for better seedling establishment under the adverse soil conditions.

  • BACKGROUND: This study investigated the effects of rice genetically modified to be resistant against rice blast and rice bacterial blight on the soil microbial community. A comparative analysis of the effects of rice genetically modified rice choline kinase (OsCK1) gene for disease resistance (GM rice) and the Nakdong parental cultivar (non-GM rice) on the soil microbial community at each stage was conducted using rhizosphere soil of the OsCK1 and Nakdong rice. METHODS AND RESULTS: The soil chemistry at each growth stage and the bacterial and fungal population densities were analyzed. Soil DNA was extracted from the samples, and the microbial community structures of the two soils were analyzed by pyrosequencing. No significant differences were observed in the soil chemistry and microbial population density between the two soils. The taxonomic analysis showed that Chloroflexi, Proteobacteria, Firmicutes, Actinobacteria, and Acidobacteria were present in all soils as the major phyla. Although the source tracking analysis per phylogenetic rank revealed that there were differences in the bacteria between the GM and non-GM soil as well as among the cultivation stages, the GM and non-GM soil were grouped according to the growth stages in the UPGMA dendrogram analysis. CONCLUSION: The difference in bacterial distributions between Nakdong and OsCK1 rice soils at each phylogenetic level detected in microbial community analysis by pyrosequencing may be due to the genetic modification done on GM rice or due to heterogeneity of the soil environment. In order to clarify this, it is necessary to analyze changes in root exudates along with the expression of transgene. A more detailed study involving additional multilateral soil analyses is required.

  • Oxides of nitrogen play important roles in atmospheric chemistry. Soil has been recognized as a major natural source of NO, and its emission depends on soil parameters such as soil nitrogen availability, soil moisture and temperature. It is necessary to understand effects of these controlling parameters on soil NO emission. In order to understand soil moisture effects on NO emission, variations of NO concentration and existence of its equilibrium concentration were observed from ammonium fertilized Japanese upland soil prepared for different soil moisture conditions. The closed chamber technique was employed for this study. The significant increases in NO with soil moisture were found. Maximum was occurred at sample ID4 (55% of water-filled pore space (WFPS)), but it decreased as soil moisture increased. No significant NO concentration was emitted from soil sample without fertilizer, but there was significant NO in fertilized soil samples. The magnitudes of NO from soil increased with time and reached at steady state within ten minutes approximately. These results suggest that nitrogen input from fertilizer takes charge in the first step of sharp increase in NO emission, and then soil moisture becomes important factor to control NO emission from the soils. NO concentrations from soil were compared to those one-day after the experiment. Results from the comparison analysis suggest that the soil NO flux might have been stimulated by soil disturbances like mixing, and this is much more effective in dry soils rather than in wet soils. It was found that much less NO came out from soils after a day; suggesting that most of NO was released from the soils within a day after fertilizer application during our experiment. The length of NO releasing time span may depend on the amounts of fertilizer applied, soil moisture condition, and other soil physical parameters.

  • Effects of elevated $CO_2$ on soil microorganisms are known to be mediated by various interactions with plants, for which such effects are relatively poorly documented. In this review, we summarize and synthesize results from studies assessing impacts of elevated $CO_2$ on soil ecosystems, focusing primarily on plants and a variety the of microbial processes. The processes considered include changes in microbial biomass of C and N, microbial number, respiration rates, organic matter decomposition, soil enzyme activities, microbial community composition, and functional groups of bacteria mediating trace gas emission such as methane and nitrous oxide. Elevated $CO_2$ in atmosphere may enhance certain microbial processes such as $CH_4$ emission from wetlands due to enhanced carbon supply from plants. However, responses of extracellular enzyme activities and microbial community structure are still controversy, because interferences with other factors such as the types of plants, nutrient availabilitial in soil, soil types, analysis methods, and types of $CO_2$ fumigation systems are not fully understood.

  • Alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) plants have been reported to be autotoxic as well as allelopathic. Laboratory and greenhouse experiments through petri-dish and pot test were conducted to determine autotoxic effects of alfalfa leaf and soil extracts on the germination or early seedling growth of alfalfa, and to evaluate allelopathic effects of alfalfa leaf residues on alfalfa, barnyard grass, com, eclipta and soybean. Alfalfa seed germination was delayed depending on aqueous extract concentration, with no difference in final germination after 48 hours. Alfalfa root length was more sensitive to the autotoxic chemicals from leaf extracts than was germination or shoot length. Root growth of alfalfa was significantly inhibited at extract concentration of more than 1 g dry tissue/L (g $\textrm{L}^{-1}$). Hypocotyl growth, however, was not affected by all the concentrations of leaf extracts. Soil extracts from 4-yr-old alfalfa stand significantly reduced alfalfa root length by 66%, while soil extracts from 0,1, and 3yr-old stand stimulated root length up to 14-32% over the control. Residue incorporation with dry matters of alfalfa leaf at 100 g $\textrm{kg}^{-1}$ reduced seedling length of several crop and weed species, ranging from 53 to 87% inhibition. Addition of nutrient solution into alfalfa leaf extracts alleviated alfalfa autotoxic effect. This result indicates alfalfa leaf and soil extracts or residues could exert autotoxic as well as allelopathic substances into soil environments during and after establishment.

  • Washing technique using solubilization and surfactant as a extractant was studied by removing contaminants from the cohesive soil contaminated with heavy metal. For this purpose, the laboratory desorption batch tests were peformed in the kaolinite contaminated with lead by using acetic acid as a solubilization and SDS as a anionic surfactant. In desorption batch tests, the effects of extractant concentration and mixing ratio were investigated and also the coupling effects of acetic acid added with surfactant were considered. Test results show that the removal efficiency of acetic acid as a extractant in the kaolinite contaminated with lead increased with increasing the concentration of acetic acid and the acetic acid was found to be more effective when adding CMC 2 or 3 of surfactant. Additionally, regardless of the initial concentration, the efficiency of lead removal from the contaminated soil increased with increasing shaking ratio.

  • Pesticide residues in soil could be affected to the growth of micro organisms and the activity of enzymes directly, and successively to the soil properties as pH, Eh and nitrogen metabolism. However, residues are diminished by degradation of soil microorganisms, run-off, leaching, volatilization, photodecomposition and uptake through crops. In this paper research results published in Korea were summarized about translocation of soil residues into crops, fates of residues in soil, effects to the activity of soil microorganisms and metabolic pathways of some pesticides. Generally speaking, pesticide residues in soil were not much affected to the agro-ecosystem except few chemicals. So it should be needed more further researches in this field, continuously.

  • It is well known that the properties of the soil deposits, especially the damping, depend on both frequency and strain amplitude. Therefore it is important to consider both dependencies to calculate the soil response against earthquakes in order to estimate input motions to buildings. However, it has been difficult to calculate the seismic response of the soil considering both dependencies directly. The author has studied the time domain evaluation of the frequency dependent dynamic stiffness, and proposed a simple hysteretic damping model that satisfies the causality condition. In this paper, this model was applied to nonlinear analyses considering the effects of the strain amplitude dependency of the soil. The basic characteristics of the proposed method were studied using a two layered soil model. The response behavior was compared with the conventional model e.g. the Ramberg-Osgood model and the SHAKE model. The characteristics of the proposed model were studied with regard to the effects of element divisions and the frequency dependency that is a key feature of the model. The efficiency of the model was confirmed by these studies.
