  • A theoretical model known as the modified rotating-angle softened-truss model (MRA-STM), which is a modification of Rotating-Angle Softened-Truss Model and Modified Compression Field Theory, is presented for the analysis of reinforced concrete membranes in shear. As an application, shear strength and behaviour of reinforced concrete exterior beam-column joints are analysed using the MRA-STM combining with the deep beam analogy. The joints are considered as RC panels and subjected to vertical and horizontal shear stresses from adjacent columns and beams. The strut and truss actions in a beam-column joint are represented by the effective transverse compression stresses and a softened concrete truss in the proposed model. The theoretical predictions of shear strength of reinforced concrete exterior beam-column joints from the proposed model show good agreement with the experimental results.

  • A new torsional analysis method for multiple cell box based on the Softened Truss Model Theory was developed. This softened truss model unifies shear and torsion to address the problem associated with a torque applied on a box. The model should be very useful for the analysis of a reinforced concrete box under torque, especially for the bridge superstructure with multiple cell box sections.

  • The present paper discusses the behavior of the reinforced concrete beams subjected to torsion by applying the endochronic plastic model in conjunction with the softened truss model. The endochronic constitutive equations are developed to describe the behavior of concrete. The mechanical behavior of concrete is decomposed into hydrostatic part and deviatoric part. New definition of the bulk modulus and the shear modulus are defined in terms of compressive strength of concrete. Also, new deviatoric hardening function is developed. Then, the endochronic constitutive equations of concrete are applied with the softened truss model for the behavior of the reinforced concrete beams subjected to torsion. The theoretical results obtained based on the present model are compared with the experimental data. The present model has shown the ability to describe the behavior of reinforced concrete beams subjected to torsion.

  • A fixed angle softened truss model has been developed in order to predict both shear strength and deformation of reinforced concrete members. The model takes into account the contribution of concrete by accuming the angle of cracks in the postcracking concrete that coincides with the reinforced concrete principal compressive angle determined by the applied stresses. Therefore, this model is capable of predicting the contribution of concrete from the govering equilibrium and compatibility equations including the shear stress and strain developed along concrete diagonal crack. However, the model has a limiting range to be applicable for reinforced concrete members. This research proposes a new algorthm of fixed angle softened truss model capable of removing the limitation of applicability. The proposed algorithm adopts a new conception of constitutive laws. The average normal stresses of concrete in the x- y- directions can be calculated by transforming the principal stresses of concrete. The proposed algorthm is verified by comparing to the test results.

  • The concrete stiffness matrices of membrane elements used in the finite element analysis of wall-type structures are reviewed and discussed. The behavior of cracked reinforced concrete membrane elements is first described by summarizing the constitutive laws of concrete and steel established for the two softened truss models (the rotating-angle softened-truss model and the fixed-angle softened-truss model). These constitutive laws are then related to the concrete stiffness matrices of the two existing cracking models (the rotating-crack model and the fixed-crack model). In view of the weakness in the existing models, a general model of the matrix is proposed. This general matrix includes two Poisson ratios which are not clearly understood at present. It is proposed that all five material properties in the general matrix should be established by new biaxial tests of panels using proportional loading and strain-control procedures.

  • This paper presents the results of an experimental investigation on the behaviour of 56 reinforced concrete beams subjected to pure torsion. The reported results include the behaviour curves, the failure modes and the values of the pre-cracking torsional stiffness, the cracking and ultimate torsional moments and the corresponding twists. The influence of the volume of stirrups, the height to width ratios and the arrangement of longitudinal bars on the torsional behaviour is discussed. In order to describe the entire torsional behaviour of the tested beams, the combination of two different analytical models is used. The prediction of the elastic till the first cracking part is achieved using a smeared crack analysis for plain concrete in torsion, whereas for the description of the post-cracking response the softened truss model is used. A simple modification to the softened truss model to include the effect of confinement is also attempted. Calculated torsional behaviour of the tested beams and 21 beams available in the literature are compared with the experimental ones and a very good agreement is observed.

  • The shear strength and strain of reinforced concrete beams are predicted by using the Transformated-Angle Truss-Model. This proposed analytical method simplified the fixed-angle softened-truss model (FA-STM) and removed the limitation of applicability of the FA-STM. The results of the proposed method for reinforced concrete beams were compared to those of the FA-STM.

  • A unified theory has recently been developed for reinforced concrete structures (Hsu 1993), subjected to the four basic actions - bending, axial load, shear and torsion. The theory has five components, namely, the struts-and-ties model, the equilibrium (or plasticity) truss model, the Bernoulli compatibility truss model, the Mohr compatibility truss model and the softened truss model. Because the last three models can satisfy the stress equilibrium, the strain compatibility and the constitutive laws of materials, they can predict not only the strength, but also the load-deformation history of a member. In this paper the five models are summarized to illustrate their intrinsic consistency.

  • To predict the shear strength of low - rise reinforced concrete shear walls with boundary elements, truss model theory considering the Vecchio - Collins stress - strain curve for softened concrete is applied. The model transforms cracked shear walls with a truss which consists of vertical bar. horizontal bar and diagonal concrete strut, and is based on equilibrium and compatibility conditions among three truss components, as well as stress - strain relationship considered for softening in diagonal concrete strut. In barbell specimens(M/VD = 0.75. fc = 420 kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$), the ratio of experimental to analytical maximum shear strength was within 0.83 ν$_{exp}$. / ν$_{cal}$. 1.25 with a relatively good agreement. As a result, the truss model was observed to be capable of predicting the maximum shear strength wi th a reasonable accuracy.acy.
