  • The world's unique geographical, multilingual, multiethnic, multiracial and multi religious Himalayan country Nepal has more than 100 years history on telephony service and it has been formulating appropriate policy and regulation for the adoption of new technology, introducing the competitive market environment for the overall development of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) infrastructures and application of ICT service and tools for socio-economic transformation. The Nepalese market seems to be continuously growing and having huge demand of mobile telephony and internet subscriptions trend. The ICT infrastructure development in difficult geographical area is quite challenging and thus operators are focusing mobile telephony and mobile internet services. Nepal has been doing its best effort on formulating policy and regulation, adoption key strategies for ICT sector development and at the same time joining hands with international and regional bodies such as ITU, SAARC etc for ICT sector development. Due to geographical diversity, policy and regulatory barriers in some extent, power supply constraints and low affordability from customers on ICT tools and services, Nepal has been facing challenges on ICT infrastructure development. However, the national statistics on ICT, Networked Readiness Index and ICT Development Index show that Nepal has done quite good progress and is keeping its pace on ICT development despite the these challenges. Moreover, there seems to be quite uncovered market segments on internet service and big opportunity on ICT sector development in Nepal in the days to come.

  • Purpose: This study aimed to identify the association between psychosocial work environment and depressive symptoms among Korean teachers. Methods: Data on 235 elementary school teachers and 341 middle and high school teachers was obtained from the 2014 Korean Working Condition Survey. The effect of psychosocial work environment on depressive symptoms was determined by multiple logistic regression analyses. Results: The prevalence of depressive symptoms was 18 % in elementary school teachers and 24 % in middle and high school teachers. When adjusted for demographics and other socio-psychological and environmental factors, 'social community at work' served as a protection factor for Korean teachers' depressive symptoms. In addition, 'cognitive demands' in elementary school teachers and 'social support from supervisors' in middle and high school teachers were found to be predictors of depressive symptoms. Conclusion: Interventions to increase 'social community at work' and 'social support from supervisors', and to decrease 'cognitive demands' may be helpful for Korean teachers at risk of depression.

  • The purpose of this study is to identify U.S. Baby Boomers' intention to move and their reasons for moving after retirement, and to examine the associations between their socio-demographic characteristics and housing characteristics, and their reasons for moving after retirement factors. A total of 403 usable data were collected through an online survey using a self-administrated questionnaire. For data analyses, descriptive statistics, factor analysis, t-test, and ANOVA were used. Almost 30% of the total respondents considered moving and 15% were strongly agreed to move after their retirement. The most frequently mentioned reasons for moving after retirement were 'a place with good weather', 'being close to leisure activities', and 'a change or decline of my current neighborhood'. Four factors of reasons for moving after retirement (quality of residential environment, need assistant, proximity to activities, and proximity to family/friends) were identified. Age, marital status, number of household, housing type, homeownership, length of residence, and number of bedroom were significantly associated with the four factors of reasons for moving. The results of this study provide a better understanding to U.S. Baby Boomers' housing behavior after retirement which is 10 years faster than Korea, and suggest insights of housing plan for Korean older adults.

  • Objectives: This study examined the trends in gender disparity in the self-rated health of people aged 25 to 64 in South Korea, a rapidly changing society, with specific attention to socio-structural inequality. Methods: Representative sample data were obtained from six successive, nationwide Social Statistics Surveys of the Korean National Statistical Office performed during 1992 to 2010. Results: The results showed a convergent trend in poor self-rated health between genders since 1992, with a sharper decline in gender disparity observed in younger adults (aged 25 to 44) than in older adults (aged 45 to 64). The diminishing gender gap seemed to be attributable to an increase in women;s educational attainment levels and to their higher status in the labor market. Conclusions: The study indicated the importance of equitable social opportunities for both genders for understanding the historical trends in the gender gap in the self-reported health data from South Korea.

The purpose of this paper was to investigate the relationship of vanity type and attitude toward fashion luxury products. The data were collected from 517 female college students in Ulsan, Pusan, and Kimhai. For data analysis, descriptive statistics, factor analysis, cluster analysis, and MCA were used. Results of cluster analysis identified the vanity type of the female college students into non-vanity group, positive viewer, and vanity group. Above two third of the total sample were the vanity group and the positive viewer. The non-vanity group, was comprised the smallest proportion of female college students. Attitude toward fashion luxury products was classified into four factors; involvement for fashion luxury, superiority of the fashion luxury, hedonic and conspicious consumption, and negative response. Methods: With a correlational survey design, a self-report survey was conducted and collected 1,132 responses from college students with dating experiences. Methods including descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, pearson correlation coefficients, and multiple regression were used to analyze data. Results: Compared to college students with no perpetrations of sexual violence, college students with perpetrations of sexual violence had significantly higher scores in father's violence, mother's violence, gender role stereotype, and sexual violence permissiveness. On the other hand they had significantly lower scores in sexual assault recognition than the compared group. A multiple regression model result forecasted parents' violence, sexual assault recognition, sexual violence permissiveness, and gender as prediction indicators of perpetrations of sexual violence. Conclusion: To prevent sexual violence while dating, domestic violence should be decreased through parents education and counseling from childhood. High-risk groups should be detected by surveying socio-psychological variables including experience of domestic violence, sexual assault recognition, and sexual violence permissiveness. It need to develop and implement sexual violence prevention programs to accurately inform and aware sexual violence.

  • Purpose: This study was to examine the values of marriage, gender-role and having children, and to explore the factors impacting the values of having children by university students. Methods: A cross-sectional design and structured questionnaires were adopted for data collection of university students in September through November, 2011. Structured questionnaires were based on participants' socio-demographics and scales on values of marriage, gender role and children developed by Young-Mi Park. Descriptive statistics, t-test, one-way ANOVA, Pearson correlation coefficient and hierarchical multiple regression were applied to data analysis. Results: A total of 366 university students participated in this study. Females and nursing students had negative values toward having children and marriage and positive thoughts about the value of gender role. The value of having children was positively associated with marriage (r=.61, p<.001) and negatively with gender role (r=-.11, p<.032). Relationship between gender role and marriage was negative (r=-.28, p<.001). Hierarchical multiple regression found that the value of children was significantly predicted by the value of marriage.
