The major findings are as follows. First, positive bicultural acceptance attitude of multicultural adolescents was shown to decrease their social withdrawal and depression. Second, social withdrawal of multicultural adolescents affected increase of their depression. Third, the effect of bicultural acceptance on depression of multicultural adolescents was partly mediated by their social withdrawal. • The purpose of this study was social withdrawal, depression, and self - esteem affect adolescents' mobile phone dependency. For this study, I used data from the first grade of junior high school during the 7th (2016) Korean child and youth panel survey provided by Korea Youth Policy Institute. A total of 1,937 people were selected as the final target except those who do not have a mobile phone. The analysis method was SPSS 23.0 and AMOS 20.0. As a result of the study, First, the higher the depression of adolescents, the higher the dependence on mobile phones. Second, the social withdrawal and depression of adolescents have a significant impact on mobile phone dependence through self-esteem. In conclusion, I would like to provide policy data so that youths can develop and implement preventive programs that can prevent personality education and erroneous mobile phone dependency that can develop healthy and positive growth.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the longitudinal relationship between Korean youth's social withdrawal, depression and community sense mediated by achievement values. For this purpose, we analyzed three years of the longitudinal panel data (2011-2013) of the Korean Children and Youth Panel Survey (KCYPS). Data were collected from 2,351 first year middle school students using the latent growth model using SPSS 18.0 and AMOS 22.0. The main analysis results were as follows. First, social withdrawal and depression decreased and community sense increased as time passed. These results supported the linear change model. Second, the initial status of social withdrawal and depression had effects on the initial status and change rates of community sense. Achievement values, the partial mediator, had a positive influence on initial community sense but had a negative influence on change rates of community sense. We discussed how to improve Korean youth's community sense based on these results.

  • The purpose of this study was to verify the impact of maltreatment by parents on adolescents' depression, furthermore, confirm the mediating effects of social withdrawal and cell phone dependency in South Korea. The data were analyzed with frequency, correlation and structural equation modeling(SEM) by SPSS 18.0 and AMOS 20.0. Data was employed from the wave 5 in 2014 of Korean Children and Youth Panel Study (KCYPS), and analyzed data of 1,969 fourth grade elementary school students. The result showed: First, maltreatment experience from parents has a statistically significant positive effect on adolescent's depression. Second, maltreatment experience from parents has positive effects on both social withdrawal and mobile phone dependency. Third, both social withdrawal and mobile phone dependency have positive effects on adolescent's depression. • This study was conducted to investigate the structural relationship between depression, self-esteem, and social withdrawal that affect academic helplessness in adolescents. The study sample was 2,265 first-year students of high school in the fourth year (2021) data from the Korean Children and Youth Panel Survey 2018. In this study, data were analyzed by a structural equation model based on the partial least squares method using SmartPLS 3.0. Results indicated that depression and social withdrawal had a significant positive effect on adolescents' academic helplessness, and self-esteem had a significant negative effect. In addition, social withdrawal had a significant positive mediating effect on the relationship between depression and academic helplessness. Therefore, it is required strategies that consider the relationship between depression, self-esteem, and social withdrawal to approach adolescents' academic helplessness.

  • This study was to find out the effect of emotional maltreatment by parents on revictimization of emotional maltreatment by peers targeting second-year students of middle school with depression and social withdrawal as mediating variables. To this end, those who experienced physical violence by parents or friends were excepted from panel data collected by National Youth Policy Institute (KCYPS) and data of 752 people who experienced emotional maltreatment by parents or peers were analyzed. Research hypotheses were verified by a utilizing structural equation model. The results can be summarized as follows: First, experiencing emotional maltreatment by parents has a direct impact on depression and social withdrawal. Second, it was found that depression has a direct impact on experiencing emotional maltreatment by peers while social withdrawal is significant in an indirect path affecting with depression as a mediating variable. Third, the multiple mediated effects of depression and social withdrawal were significant in the revictimization relationship between emotional maltreatment by parents and emotional maltreatment by peers. This means that emotional maltreatment by parents becomes a predictor in re-experiencing emotional maltreatment by peers. It also means that emotional maltreatment by parents has an indirect effect through psychological and emotional factors such as depression and social withdrawal rather than having a direct effect. Based on the results of this study, limitations of the study and suggestions for future research were discussed.

  • The purpose of this study is to examine the sequential mediating effects of social withdrawal and depression in the relationship between achievement motivation and career decision of multicultural adolescents. To this end, we analyzed adolescents data from the 8th year survey(2018) of the 'Multicultural Adolescent Panel Study(MAPS)' provided by the National Youth Policy Institute(NYPI). As a result of the study, first, achievement motivation was found to have a significant and positive effect on career decision. Second, it was found that social withdrawal did not mediate the relationship between achievement motivation and career decision. Third, it was found that depression mediates the relationship between achievement motivation and career decision. Fourth, it was found that social withdrawal and depression sequentially mediate the relationship between achievement motivation and career decision. Based on the results of this study, we searched for social support measures to improve the career decision of multicultural adolescents and support their career paths, and suggested implications and limitations of the results of this study and suggestions for follow-up studies.

  • This study identified which aspects of perceived social support influence children's internalizing problems. The participants were 91 children from divorced families and 87 children from non-divorced families. They completed a questionnaire assessing the level of perceived social support and their teacher rated their internalizing problems(withdrawal, depression/anxiety) on K-CBCL scale. Sixth graders from non-divorced families perceived evaluative support higher than sixth graders from divorced families. In withdrawal, third graders from divorced families were rated higher than preschooler and sixth graders by their teacher. In depression/anxiety, third graders from divorced families were rated higher than sixth graders by their teacher. Internalizing problems of children from divorced families were affected by their perceived emotional support. Namely, children from divorced families who perceived less emotional support experienced more withdrawal and depression/anxiety.

  • This study examined how social withdrawal as an individual factor and discrimination as a contextual factor contributed to depression caused by peer victimization among middle school students. Self-reported data of 1,611 students from 86 classrooms in 7 middle schools was analyzed, using multilevel path analysis. The results indicate that peer victimization had a significant partial mediating effect on the relation between social withdrawal and depression at the individual level. Social withdrawal had a direct positive effect on depression as well as an indirect positive effect on depression via high levels of peer victimization. Discrimination also positively predicted peer victimization at the classroom level. Moreover, classroom-level discrimination moderated the individual-level relations between social withdrawal and peer victimization. The relation between social withdrawal and peer victimization was much stronger as the levels of discrimination in the classroom were higher. These findings shed light on the importance of considering both individual and contextual factors when intervening to prevent peer victimization.

  • The purpose of this study is to examine the associations among attention deficit/hyperactivity, social withdrawal, peer relationships, and depression in early adolescence. Gender differences in the associations were also examined. This study investigated these relationships and the gender differences using structural equation modeling multi-group analysis. The third wave data from Korea Children and Youth Panel Survey (KCYPS) of fourth graders were analyzed. The results indicated that attention deficit/hyperactivity had significant effects on depression directly and indirectly through social withdrawal and peer relationships. These results suggest that new programs should be developed to prevent or alleviate depression associated with attention deficit/hyperactivity among adolescents. Specifically, social withdrawal and peer relationships need to be emphasized in planning prevention or intervention programs to promote mental health of adolescents with attention deficit/hyperactivity.
