  • This study examines the effect of founders' strategic orientation and social capital on the performance of startups in Korean contexts. Founders' strategic orientation is proposed as the main factor to reduce the risk of failure and to increase the potential of future growth of the startup. Three main components of strategic orientation, entrepreneurial, market, technology, were simultaneously tested with a sample of Korean startups. Furthermore, founders' social capital, networks with supporting entities and the level of chemistry within founding members were also proposed to be important factors. We also tested possible mediating effects of social capital on the main impact of strategic orientation. With a sample of 79 startups founded less than 5 years in Seoul Metropolitan Areas, we found that technology orientation of founders only significantly increases the performance of startups, but both entrepreneurial and market orientation do not. Regarding social capital effect, the external networks of the founding members are effective as proposed, and also the high cohesiveness of founding members increases the startup performance. However, the mediating role of social capital is just partially confirmed. The implications of our findings, in both sense of firm's strategy and startup policy, are discussed. This study is expected to be a bridge connecting firms' strategy with startup policy-making in Korea.

  • Venture Capital Firms (VCs) encounter severe information asymmetry risks at almost every stage in their investment lifecycle. This paper explores the agency risks arising from information asymmetry during the stage of exits by VCs from the funded companies in their portfolio and how that impacts the incidence of specific types of type of exits (IPOs/M&As). In this empirical study, by using the data on IPO and M&A exits from venture capital-funded companies, we show how the ability of prospective buyers to better resolve agency risks is directly correlated with the incidence of the above exit types. Using the technique of logistic regression, we demonstrate that factors such as syndication, specialization focus of the VC firm (in terms of stage and sector) and the level of its social capital (proxied by its age and experience) drive the success rate of exits. This is one of first studies in context of exits from VC funded companies in the Indian context.

Furthermore, this study aimed to examine the relative influence of the sub-factors of social capital on the multicultural acceptance and to suggest which social capitals should be reinforced. Data on 'social capital' and 'multicultural acceptance' used in this study were obtained from the data of the 8th Korean General Social Survey (KGSS) in 2010. The results of analyses are as follows. First, social capital was lower with increase in age (F=28.18, p<.001), and higher with increase in academic qualification (F=15.49, p<.001), and total household income (F=8.85, p<.001). Second, the multicultural acceptance was higher in men (t=9.98, p<01) and lower with increase in age (F=27.29, p<.001), and higher with increase in academic qualification (F=28.99, p<.001), and total household income (F=11.92, p<.001). Third, among the three social capital factors influencing the multicultural acceptance, 'trust' was found to have a significant positive (+) effect. • This study aims to investigate how the social capital of middle school students is influenced by their grades, attitudes, and school interests, which are defined as school adjustment flexibility, and how they affect the social capital of middle school students. This study aims to provide a basis for policy discussions on how to shape the social capital of adolescents. The results of the analysis show that school adjustment flexibility has an impact on each factor of social capital. Trust is positively related to school attitudes, and norms are positively related to school compliance and school interest. Network has a positive effect on school attitude and a negative effect on school enjoyment. These results suggest that the higher the ability to follow the rules, the higher the norms of social capital, which suggests that social norms internalized at the individual level also affect group norms, which are the standards of behavior or rituals that members of a group follow when they want to behave as expected of them. We were able to find out that the normative domain of social capital is expanded by increasing the interest in school life of elementary and middle school students, and we confirmed that school class attitude is a major influencing factor in developing the network of social capital. Therefore, in order to increase the social capital capacity of elementary and middle school students, it is necessary to devise a plan to form various networks through multifaceted efforts to increase interest in school life and changes in school class attitude.
