Data were collected by way of questionnaires, made up of two sections: to examine attitudes toward AIDS patients Kelly's prejudicial evaluation scale and social interaction scale was used, and to measure knowledge about AIDS a knowledge evaluation tool developed by the investigators was used. Subjects of the study were 108 nurse teachers participating in a qualifying education program which was held at Education College, Gyeong Sang National University in 1996. The data were analyzed using percentages, means, Pearson correlation coefficients and paired t-test. The results of the study were summarized as follows ; 1. The knowledge on AIDS of nurse teachers was improved considerably after a 2 hour education. The average score was 19.1 over 20.0 after education against 15.3 before education. 2. The prejudicial attitudes of nurse teachers toward AIDS patients were also improved with statistical significance; 33.63 over a total score of 60.00 after education against 31.81 before education. The prejudicial evaluation is performed on 12 items on a scale of $1\sim5$. 3. The social interaction scale of nurse teachers toward AIDS patients improved a little. But this improvement did not show any statistical significance. 4. The prejudicial evaluation scale showed a significant negative correlation with the social in teraction scale before and after education, and the same was true for the knowledge scale but only after education.

  • Background: Conservation of resources theory assumes loss of resources as a cause of job strain. In hospital work, conflicts with supervisors are tested to predict lower resources, that is, supervisory social support, participation possibilities, and appreciation. All three resources are expected to predict, in turn, experienced stress (job strain) and lower job satisfaction, lower affective commitment, and a higher resigned attitude towards the job (job attitudes). Methods: The sample included 1,073 employees from 14 Swiss hospitals (n = 604 nurses, n = 81 physicians, n = 135 medical therapists, and n = 253 technical and administrative staff). Of the total sample, 83.1% were female and 38.9% worked full-time. The median tenure was between 7 years and 10 years. Constructs were assessed by online questionnaires. Structural equation modeling was used to test mediation. Results: Structural equation modeling confirmed the negative association of conflict with supervisors and job resources. Tests of indirect paths to resources as a link between conflicts with supervisors and job attitudes were significant. For nurses, social support, participation and appreciation showed a significant indirect path, while among medical technicians the indirect paths included social support and appreciation, and among physicians only appreciation showed a significant indirect path. In medical therapists no indirect path was significant. Job resources did not mediate the link between conflict with supervisors and stress in any occupational group. Conclusion: Conflicts with supervisors are likely to reduce job resources and in turn to lower job attitudes. Work design in hospitals should, therefore, address interpersonal working conditions and conflict management in leadership development.

  • This study aims to validate the Attitudes to Aging Questionnaire(AAQ), which was recently developed in foreign countries, for Korean elderly. Using a sample of 320 older individuals living in Seoul, Gyeonggi, Chungcheong areas, statistical analyses including item analysis, exploratory factor analysis, convergent validity analysis were attempted to AAQ which composed of three factors with 24 items. In result, the three factor model of AAQ(including psychosocial loss, physical change, and psychological growth) were reconstructed in which new three factors(psychological loss, social loss, and change and growth in body and mind) were confirmed and three items were deleted. Reliability and convergent validity of AAQ-21 were confirmed. AAQ-21 would be useful to researchers and practitioners working with older adults for systematically assessing the attitudes to aging of older individuals and thus contribute to development of social policies and welfare programs for the elderly.
