1. In order to make the improvement of plywood quality, this study has been made. The pretreatments applied to the veneers are as follows. a) The soaking treatment of the veneer in 30 percent methanol solution for 24 hours was applied to remove some resinous materials which may cause many stain discolouring on the face of finished plywood. b) The preservative treatment of the veneer in 2 percent malenit solution for 2 to 3 minutes was adopted to make resistance against decay and insect damages. c) The fire retardant treatment of the veneer in 40 percent ammonium phosphate solution for 2 hours was applied to give retardation effect against fire burning. 2. The results summarized in this study are as follows. a) One percent resinous materials was extracted, after the soaking of the veneers in 30 percent diluted methanol. b) No marks of the dirty stains of resinous materials on the face of the treated plywood was shown, although many quite dirty stains on the face of untreated plywood have contrary seen. c) However, the strip shear test strength of the treated plywood was not decreased. It means that there is no difference in the strength between the treated plywood and the untreated plywood. The strength values were 25.08 kg/$cm^2$ and 24.98 kg/$cm^2$, respectively. d) The strip shear test strength of plywood made of the treated veneers in 2 percent malenit solution was not decreased. e) The slight decrease of the strip shear test strength of the treated plywood made of the treated veneer in 40 percent ammonuim phosphate solution was shown. However, the remarkable difference of the fire retardation activities between the treated specimens and the untreated specimens has seen as in Table 10, that is, the fire proofed specimens had taken about 28 seconds to start to burn, while the untreated specimens had taken 15 seconds to reach to burning. This means that the fire retardation effect of the fire proofed plywood was greater than that of the unproofed plywood.
The antimicrobial effect of mixed solution of botanical antimicrobial agent-citrus product (BAAC) and such a natural additive as aloe, ginseng or Prunus mume extract on the spoilage microorganisms of soybean sprouts were investigated by paper disk method. The mixture (BAAG) of BAAC and ginseng extract showed the remarkable antimicrobial activity in the result of the experiment. Therefore, we used BAAG as pre-soaking and cultivating solution of soybean sprouts. Total bacterial and Escherichia coli cell count of soybean sprouts pre-soaked and cultivated in the BAAG-diluted solution (50 ppm) showed 2.5 ${\times}$ 10 CFU/mL and 1.3 ${\times}$ 10 cfu/mL in comparison with 3.5 ${\times}$ 10$^3$ cfu/mL and 5.8 ${\times}$ 10$^3$ cfu/mL of the control, respectively. BAAG-treated soybean sprouts also showed no slimy brown product and undesirable odor characterized in the control. It was confirmed that BAAG could be a proper pre-soaking and cultivating solution of soybean sprouts.
The morphology of lead titanate powders prepared by sol-gel and coprecipitation techniques was investigated as a function of firing temperature and soaking time. PbTiO3 precursor powders were derived from a mixed solution of lead nitrate and titanium tetrachloride at 40℃ to 43℃ and pH of 9.0 to 9.7, and fired at temperatures 350-1000℃ for 1-10h in air. An increase of particle size and agglomeration with increasing calcination temperature and duration could be observed. By annealing sol-gel derived powder at 700℃, the tially-formed acicular(and/or prismatic) primary particles transformed to polyhedral shape with soaking time, and further soaking caused coarsening the polyhedral particles with rounded edges. However, the morphology of the coprecipitated powders was not varied during crystallization.
A batch mixture was prepared as 16mol% CaO-84mol% $ZrO_2$ of regeant-grade powder. The monoclinic Zirconia powder had an average particle size of $9.24 \mu\textrm{m}$ and calcium carbonate powder had a reported purity of 99.7 weight percent and mean particle size of TEX>$24, 37<\mu\textrm{m}$. The specimens were fired at 1400, 1500, 1650 and $1750^{\circ}C$ for 0. 3, 5 and 7 hours respectively. After fired the specimens were investigated using Scaning electron microscopy. Density Porosity Compressive strength Modulus of rupture and Thermal expansion were measured X-ray diffration analysis was also carried out. The results are as follows ; 1) As the firing temperature or soaking time was increased firing linear shrinkage apparent density compressive strength and modulus of rupture increased but apparent porosity decreased, 2) Cubic and monoclinic Zirconia was found at $1400^{\circ}C$ and cubic Ziconia found above $1500^{\circ}C$ 3) The specimens fired at 140$0^{\circ}C$ without soaking display thermal expansion curves by monoclinic〓tetragonal transformation and no tranformation was found at $1400^{\circ}C$ for 5hrs and above $1500^{\circ}C$. 4) The lattice parameter had constant value of 5.1345 $\AA$ through all the ranges of firing temperature 5) The higher the firing temperature was or the longer the soaking time was the larger the grain size was.
The amounts of salt diffused into radish after immersing in various concentrations of salt solution at different temperatures were measured and the changes of radish texture by the salt diffusion were estimated with the viscoelastic constants of a 3 element solid model determined by a stress relaxation test. The amount of salt diffused through radish was increased with increasing the salt concentration and soaking temperature. While the instantaneous stress, equilibrium elastic solid content and viscoelastic constants of radish were decreased as salt concentration and soaking temperature increased, the stress relaxed fast. Viscoelastic constants as well as the diffusivity were influenced by salt concentration more than by soaking temperature. The rheological equations for the predictable stress changes of radish after immersed in the salt solution at various conditions (temperature, salt concentration and impure salt) were suggested as a function of time.
This experiment was carried out to understand the effect of pre-sowing seed treatment by GA$_3$ and IAA on flowering and characteristics of yield component in peanuts. Peanut seed was treated by soaking in 10, 50, 100ppm of GA$_3$ solution, and 50, 100, 200ppm of IAA solution. Treatments of GA$_3$ and IAA resulted 7-5 days earlier emergence and 11-17days shorter of the flowering date compared with the untreated control. By soaking treatments with IAA in 100ppm and GA$_3$ in 100ppm, accumulated flowers were increased at early growing stage of 30 days after flowering compared with untreated control. By soaking treatments with IAA in 100ppm and GA$_3$ in 100ppm, main stem length, branch length and internode of main stem showed to flourish at investigation from early growing stage to 3 days before harvesting.
The principal objective of this study was to develop and standardize a preparation method for low-sodium tomato jangachi (traditional Korean pickle) via short-term fermentation with immature green cherry tomatoes. In order to determine the preferred concentrations of soy sauce and soaking temperatures of immature cherry tomato pickles in different stages of storage, we conducted an analysis of physico-chemical characteristics and microbiological properties, and also performed a preference test on samples of immature green cherry tomato pickles. Immature cherry tomatoes were prepared in three different soy sauce concentrations --20, 40, and 60%-- and three different soaking temperatures --60, 80, and 100$^{\circ}C$-- and then stored for 28 days at 5$^{\circ}C$. As a result, the pH increased significantly with increases in the amount of soy in the dipping solution (p<0.05). The saltiness was maintained at levels of approximately $0.17{\sim}0.28%$ (20% group), $0.32{\sim}0.67%$% (40%group), $0.48{\sim}1.00%$ (60% group) during storage periods. These results show that the saltiness of immature cherry tomato pickles was substantially lower than that of commercial pickles. The contents of reducing sugar and lightness decreased significantly with increasing concentrations of soy dipping solution. The redness and yellowness values of the tomatoes decreased significantly with increasing concentrations of soy sauce. Additionally, the lower the concentration of soy sauce used, the more rapidly the hardness of the immature cherry tomato pickles was reduced at 100$^{\circ}C$. PME activity moved within a narrow range, and then stabilized during the storage period. With regard to the results of the consumer preference test, 20%-100$^{\circ}C$ was the most preferred condition overall, 40%-80$^{\circ}C$ was the condition in which the texture was most preferred, and 40%-80$^{\circ}C$ was the condition that yielded the highest color scores.
This experiment was conducted to investigate the effect of chitosan on the growth and yield of fall-planted potatoes. The research was carried out in fall-planted potatoes from August 2000 to Aprial 2001 at the height of 250m above sea level in Jeju Island. Soaking for 30 min. of seed potatoes in 200 times diluted solution of 3% liquid chitosan shortened days to emergence by 4 to 6 days. Stem length, number of stems and number of stolons per plant were 56.5 cm, 4.3, and 19.0, respectively, when seed potatoes were soaked for 30 min. in 200 times diluted solution of 3% liquid chitossan. Total potato yield in this treatment reached 2,963 kg per 10a and was significantly greater than in other treatments. Yield of marketable tubers (greater than 30g) per 10a for treatment of seed potatoes soaking in 200 times diluted solution of 3% liquid chitosan and for treatment of foliage spray with 200 times diluted solution of 3% liquid chitosan plus chitosna power (10 kg per 10a) miximg with soil was 2,761 kg and 2,628 kg, respectively. Contents of Mg, Fe and B were the greatest in the treatment of 30 min. soaking of seed potatoes in 200 times diluted solution of 3% liquid chitosanm. The increased contents of these elements are considered to have caused yield increase as a result of increased chlorophyll content for photosynthesis.

Herbs and shrubs are employed for environmental restoration purposes. Among common herbs and shrubs, few species with low germination rates were selected and studied for enhanced germination rates and decreased germination times via soaking treatment. Rhus chinensis, incubator grown samples treated with the bacterial solution for 72hrs followed by immediate seeding showed the highest germination rate of 26.7% and germination period of 5.7 days, 3 days decrease from the control. Treatment of distilled water (t=3.79, p<0.01), nutrient broth (t=4.44, p<0.00) and bacterial solution (t=4.42, p<0.00) showed highly significant difference. In the case of soil tests, treating in the nutrient broth for 72 hrs followed by immediate seeding yielded the the highest germination rate of 23.3% with 7.3 days to initial germination, a decrease of 14.7 days with respect to the control. All the samples followed by immediate seeding showed significant difference (t=2.13, p<0.05). Incubator grown samples of Lespedeza cyrtobotrya showed different results. The incubator samples suspended for 48 hrs in distilled water followed by immediate seeding and 1 day drying displayed the highest germination rate of 96.7%, surpassing that of the control by 33.4%. The incubator samples treated with the distilled water and nutrient broth showed enhanced germination. But only the samples treated with distilled water and nutrient broth for 48hrs showed the increased germination in soil tests. All the sample treated for 24 hrs followed by immediate seeding or dried for 1 day showed initial germination as early as 1 day in incubator. The initial germinations were shortened in the samples treated with distilled water and nutrient broth for 48hrs in soil tests. Lespedeza cuneata incubator sample treated with nutrient broth for 24 hrs and dried for 1 day exhibited the highest germination rate of 83.3%, a 31.1% improvement over the control. The incubator samples treated with distilled water for 48 hrs (t=4.20, p<0.01) showed effective increase of germination. The treatment of distilled water (t=2.96, p<0.05) and bacterial solution (t=2.24, p<0.05) showed significant difference. The germination rates in soil were less than those of incubator and the control. The incubator samples treated with distilled water and bacterial solution displayed 1 day germination period, shortened by 1.3 days compared to the control. For soil grown samples, the samples treated with distilled water showed delayed initial germination and those treated with nutrient broth for 48hrs and bacterial solution for 72hrs shortened initial germination.
This research was aimed to extend the vase life and improve the quality of cut roses 'Marina'. This study investigated the effect of three different angles and sucrose concentration on the vase life and the quality of cut rose flowers. In first experiment, cut roses were placed in three different angles ($0^{\circ}$, $45^{\circ}$ and $90^{\circ}$) in holding solutions containing 0.5, 1 and 2% sucrose (soaking treatment), and examined the number of petals of cut roses. In second experiment, cut roses were placed in three different angles after pre-treated in 0, 1, 2 and 4% sucrose solution for 2 and 20 hours, and examined the flower diameter of cut roses. In third experiment, cut roses were examined the pigmentation, flowing response and chlorophyll contents in cut roses by three different angles after pulsing treatment (pre-treatment) in holding solution containing 2% sucrose for 2 and 20 hours. Results of this study showed that cut roses were influenced by arranging angles and sucrose concentrations. The vase life of cut roses were extended in $45^{\circ}$ and $90^{\circ}$ arranging angle, as compared with the control (distilled water), and the holding solution containing 2% sucrose significantly increased vase life of cut roses(P < 0.05). Flower diameter of cut roses pre-treated in 4% sucrose solution for 2 and 20 hours significantly decreased (P < 0.05). The pigmentation and flowing response in cut roses were beneficial in $45^{\circ}$ arranging angle treated with 2% sucrose solution for 2 and 20 hours. Chlorophyll content in leaves of cut roses was not influenced by arranging angles. The pigmentation and flowing response of $0^{\circ}$ and $45^{\circ}$ arranging angles were better than that of 90 arranging angle. The vase life of cut roses in $45^{\circ}$ arranging angle was more prolonged than that in $90^{\circ}$ arranging angle. In conclusion, the arranging angles seem to be effective in retarding senescence of cut rose flowers.
