  • The typical design of ground improvement with prefabricated vertical drains (PVD) and surcharge preloading involves a series of deterministic analyses using averaged or mean soil properties for the various combination of the PVD spacing and surcharge preloading height that would meet the criteria for minimum consolidation time and required degree of consolidation. The optimum design combination is then selected in which the total cost of ground improvement is a minimum. Considering the variability and uncertainties of the soil consolidation parameters, as well as considering the effects of soil disturbance (smear zone) and drain resistance in the analysis, this study presents a stochastic cost optimization of ground improvement with PVD and surcharge preloading. Direct Monte Carlo (MC) simulation and importance sampling (IS) technique is used in the stochastic analysis by limiting the sampled random soil parameters within the range from a minimum to maximum value while considering their statistical distribution. The method has been verified in a case study of PVD improved ground with preloading, in which average results of the stochastic analysis showed a good agreement with field monitoring data.

  • In order to investigate the soil disturbance induced by anchor-shoe for PVD installation and the anchoring mechanism, a new two dimensional testing system was developed. By using the developed testing system, 1g and centrifuge model tests were performed, simulating the driving-retrieval process of both conventional symmetric anchor shoe and new asymmetric anchor shoe. Various size anchor-shoes were simulated and the results were compared. The images recorded during the installation were analyzed by image processing technique. The results of the image analysis presented the clay disturbance depending on the size and type of anchor shoe. In addition, from the retrieval process, the anchoring mechanism was revealed and the holding capacity was measured. As results, the size of anchor shoe influences the soil disturbance and holding capacity. The new asymmetric anchor shoe reduces the soil disturbance and improves anchoring performance.

  • A 7-month-old female Cocker spaniel dog was examined for chronic anemia. Based on information provided by local clinician the patient had had a 'flu-like' illness three weeks before submission of the sample, had a fever of $40.9^{\circ}C$, and had mild hepatomegaly. This dog had also history of weight loss, vomiting, anorexia, dehydration, lethargy, ascites, polyuria and polydipsia. A blood smear showed non-regenerative anemia. Thoracic radiograph showed irregular shadowing in the left mid-zone. Serum biochemical results showed a hypercalcemia, azotemia, hypercholesterolemia, hyperphosphatemia, hypoalbuminemia, and metabolic acidosis. Results of urinalysis showed proteinuria, slightly acidic with isosthenuria. Histopathologic examination of tissue sections revealed amyloid deposits in multiple sites including kidneys, liver and spleen.

  • A result of national malaria surveillance in Korean civilians was described. Since a case of indigenous vivax malaria was detected in 1993, a total of 2,198 cases was confirmed by blood smear up to 1997. Of them, 1,548 cases were soldiers serving in the demilitarized zone (DMZ), while 650 cases were civilians. Number of civilian cases was 3 in 1994, 19 in 1995, 71 in 1996, and 557 in 1997. Of them, 239 were ex-soldiers who discharged after military service in the prevalent areas such as Paju, Yonchon, Kimpo, Kangwha, Tongduchon in Kyonggi-do and Chorwon in Kangwon-do while 308 patients were civilian residents in the prevalent areas. Seventy-two patients, living nationwide, had a history of visiting the prevalent areas during transmission season. Only 32 civilian patients denied any relation with the prevalent areas. As a whole, a half of the civilian cases was diagnosed when living in non-prevalent areas. Male patients in their twenties was the highest in number. Annual parasite index is steadily elevated in residents living in the prevalent areas. Monthly incidence showed an unimodal distribution, forming a peak in August. Ex-soldiers exhibited a delayed incubation ranging from 153 to 452 days ($279{\pm}41$ days). The time required for diagnosis was shortened from 23.6 days in 1995 to 13.7 days in 1997. Although the current epidemic of vivax malaria started as a border malaria, it seems highly probable that vivax malaria is established in the local areas and responsible for at least a part of transmission.

  • The quantity of noxious wastes generated by the growth in industrialization and population in all over the world and its potential hazards in subsurface environments are becoming increasingly significant. The extraction of the contaminant from the soil and movement of the water are restricted due to the low permeability and adsorption characteristics of the reclaimed soils. Incorporated technique with PVDs have been used for dewatering from fine-grained soils for the purpose of ground improvement by means of soil flushing and soil vapor extraction systems. This paper is to evaluate several key parameters that affected to the performance of the PVDs specifically with regard to: well resistance of PVD, zone of influence, and smear effects. In the feasibility of contaminant remediation was evaluated in pilot-scale laboratory experiments. Well resistance is affected on the vertical discharge capacity of the PVDs under the various vacuum pressures. The discharge capacity increases consistently in areal extents with higher applied vacuum up to a limiting vacuum pressure. The head values for each piezometer at different vacuum pressures show that the largest head loss occurs within 14 cm of the PVD. Air flow rates and head losses were measured for the PVD placed in the model test box and the gas permeability of the silty soils was calculated. Increasing the equivalent diameter results in a decrease in the calculated gas permeability. It is concluded that the gas permeability determined over the 1,500 to 2,000 $cm^3/s$ flow rates are the most accurate values which yields gas permeability of about 3.152 Darcy.

  • To achieve good dentin bonding, we must obtain proper wet dentin surface. The purpose of this study was to compare dentin surface according to different wetness degree by AFM image as studying how to obtaining proper wet dentin surface. Intact recently extracted primary teeth were used in the study. The extracted teeth were stored in distilled water at $4^{\circ}C$ until prepared. The teeth were used to prepare 1mm thick dentin disks with exposed surfaces parallel to the occlusal surfaces. The surface of the dentin were polished with polishing disk. The sample were ultrasonically cleaned with distilled water. The sample of each group were treated by different ways. We compared dentin surface of each group by AFM image. From the experiment, the following results were obtained. 1. Acid etching in the dentin surface of primary teeth, resulted in the removal of the smear layer, which opened dentinal tubules, caused the demineralization of peritubular and intertubular dentin, and exposed a collagen-rich transition zone. 2. If the etched dentin was so dehydrated, the intertubular dentin surfaces deceased in height and the diameters of the dentinal tubules decreased slightly. 3. In the group dried with compressed air for 20 seconds at 2 cm, the dentin surfaces were too excessive dried and dehydrated. 4. In the group dried with compressed air for 3 seconds at 2 cm, dry cotton, wet cotton, microbrush and absorbent tissue paper, the dentin surfaces were properly wet.
