Renal Rupture by Cystadenocarcinoma in a Yorkshire Terrier

  • A 13-year-old, spayed female, Yorkshire terrier was presented with a history of vomiting and diarrhea. Radiographic and ultrasonographic studies suggested rupture of right renal cyst. Left kidney had increased cortical echogenecity with indistinct corticomedullary junction on sonogram. Unilateral nephroureterectomy of right kidney was performed. Histopathologic examination of the resected renal mass confirmed a renal cystadenocarcinoma. To the best of our knowledge, it is the first case report of renal cystadenocarcinoma in a small breed dog in Korea.

Single-Plane Fluoroscopic Three-Dimensional Kinematics of Normal Stifle Joint in Beagle Dogs

  • The objective of this study was to establish kinematic reference ranges for the femorotibial (FT) joint and the patellofemoral (PF) joint in healthy small-breed dogs by measuring 3D kinematics at the walk. Single-plane fluoroscopy was used to image the stifle joints of five healthy beagle dogs while the dogs were walking. 3D bone models of the femur, patella, and tibia were reconstructed by computed tomography scanning of the beagle dogs' hind limbs. The shape-matching technique was used to measure kinematic data from the fluoroscopic images and the 3D bone models. The cranial translation of the tibia during walking was inversely proportional to the FT joint flexion. There were significant correlations between the patellar motion and the tibial motion. The FT joint flexion had a strong correlation with the patellar proximodistal translation and flexion. Additionally, the tibial mediolateral translation had a strong correlation with the patellar shift and tilt. In this study, normal in vivo 3D FT joint and PF joint kinematics were demonstrated, and the average kinematic parameters were determined in walking beagle dogs.

  • This study provides basic indices for the development of a pet dog's dummy. Surveys were conducted with 71 owners of small dogs weighing under 10kg as preliminary research for information on pet dogs, uses and complaints about their clothes and demographic information to investigate wearing conditions. We collected pictures of 30 products sold in 12 brands at home and abroad to analyze size, materials, and patterns and investigate the actual production conditions. The survey results on wearing conditions indicated that 'Maltese' was the breed most often raised in households. Dogs weighing 'between 3kg and 4kg' were most common. Dogs under five years of age took up 53.5%. Most of the clothes were 'S' size, followed by 'M' and 'L' Most responded, 'The overall size does not fit' as an inconvenience when worn for long. Second, most brands developed products in three sizes. The displayed details included neck and chest circumference, back length and dummy height. Cotton and artificial leather were used most often for the outer fabric, cotton for the internal filling along with wire and aluminum for some products to maintain shape and motions. Most dummies consisted of back+outer leg, belly, inner leg and sole. Sometimes, a composition line was added by the chest shape, and an incision was placed between the body and leg for breeds with thick legs. Most patterns had a composition line in the leg connected from the belly.

Symmetrical Multipartite of Lateral Fabella in a Small Breed Dog (소형견에서 외측 무릎 종자뼈의 대칭적 다분화)

  • An 11-year-old, female, Maltese dog was presented with abdominal distension and intermittent slight lameness on left hindlimb. Palpable abdominal pain and purulent vaginal discharge were observed on physical examination. Severe leukopenia with toxic change, and azotemia, hyperphosphatemia, and hyponatremia were identified on blood profile. On radiographs and abdominal sonograms, remarkable soft tissue mass containing echogenic material deviating intestines craniodorsally compatible with pyometra. On stifle radiographs, 4-5 fragmented sesamoid bone (fabella) was identified on both stifle joint with medial patella luxation. Immediate ovariohysterectomy was performed and the patient was recovered well with normal blood work. No specific treatment was attempted to the left hindlimb showing minimal and intermittent lameness. No remarkable abnormal gait was reported for 3-month follow-up period. The fragmented lateral fabella is considered congenital multipartite of lateral fabella not related to the lameness.

  • Nasal tumors have been reported frequently in dogs and nasal discharge has been the primary presenting complaint in nasal tumor patients. A 10-year-old 7 kg male mixed breed dog was presented to the animal hospital for evaluation of severe bloody nasal discharge. After physical examination, blood examination and X-ray examination, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) examination was also conducted. Based on MRI nasal tumor which does not extend cranial vault was diagnosed. The nasal tumor was confirmed as adenosquamous cell carcinoma by histopathological examination after necropsy. The invasive characteristics of the neoplasm were documented by MRI. MRI was very valuable diagnostic tool for identifying extracranial and intracranial tumor invasion in a small animal.

Closure of patent ductus arteriosus with a vascular plug in a German Shepherd dog

  • A 4-year-old, spayed female German Shepherd dog (GSD) weighing 22.4 kg was referred to Chungnam National University Veterinary Medicine Teaching Hospital with the chief complaint of a cardiac murmur. A continuous murmur was detected at the left basilar region upon auscultation. In the thoracic radiographs, slight bulging of the aorta, the main pulmonary artery, and the left atrium were observed. Echocardiography revealed continuous turbulent flow directed from the main pulmonary artery towards the pulmonary valve and consistently within the main pulmonary artery. Based on all the results, a diagnosis of type II A patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) was made, and plans were established to treat it with transcatheter occlusion. Transcatheter occlusion was performed using a vascular plug and successfully deployed at the PDA. The patient did not exhibit any complications. GSDs are relatively less common compared to small-breed dogs in South Korea. Considering that GSDs are predisposed to PDA, it is crucial to periodically assess the presence of PDA through auscultation and echocardiography, even in the absence of clinical signs. Transcatheter occlusion using a vascular plug can be an option for treatment and can yield favorable outcomes.

Treatment of Grade IV Medial Patellar Luxation by Femoral Shortening Osteotomy in Three Small-Breed Dogs (세 마리의 소형견에서 대퇴 단축 절골술에 의한 4단계 내측 슬개골 탈구의 치료 증례)

  • Three small-breed dogs with grade IV medial patellar luxation were presented. In all cases, patellar luxation could not be reduced by conventional surgical techniques. Femoral shortening osteotomy was performed in all dogs to correct patellar luxation. In all the dogs, the clinical condition was remarkably improved, and following surgical procedures, no complication or recurrence was presented. Femoral shortening osteotomy is an effective treatment in small-breed dogs with medial patellar luxation associated with severe skeletal deformity.

  • This study was performed to evaluate the size and asymmetry of the lateral ventricles in CT images of three different small breed dogs. CT examinations were performed on thirty Yorkshire terriers, malteses, and shihtzu dogs, respectively. The size and asymmetry of their lateral ventricles were evaluated at three different levels of brain, and dogs were categorized on the basis of the percentage of their ventricular height (Vh) to brain height (Bh). Degree of asymmetry was also categorized based on the rVh (ratio of right and left ventricular heights) as normal (rVh < 1.5), mild (1.5 < rVh < 2.0), or severe (2.0 < rVh). Clinically insignificant ventricular dilation was common in these breed dogs. However, severe asymmetry was not presented in clinically normal dogs. We suggested 11 mm as an upper limit of ventricular size in normal small breed dogs.

  • A 10-month-old intact male Maltese dog (body weight, 1.6 kg) presented with intermittent cough and abnormal heart sounds. The dog was diagnosed with a left-to-right patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) on the basis of the results of transthoracic echocardiography, color flow Doppler examination, and angiography. Transcatheter occlusion of the PDA was performed using the $Amplatz^{(R)}$ Canine Duct Occluder (ACDO) via the femoral artery. The device was placed under fluoroscopic guidance and successfully occluded the PDA. The continuous heart murmur disappeared immediately after the correction and no residual flow was detected. The dog was discharged the following day and regularly examined for complications and safety. This is the first report demonstrating the clinical application of ACDO for the transcatheter closure of PDA via the femoral artery in a small-breed dog in Korea.
