  • This study is intended to investigate an influence of the kinds and the maximum size of aggregate on the compressive strength of small size core specimen. According to the results, the compressive strength of standard specimen is large in order of basalt, granite and limestone aggregate, and shows increasing tendency as the maximum size of aggregate grows large. The compressive strength of concrete using basalt aggregate shows similar tendency to granite aggregate, and that of concrete using limestone aggregate decreases slightly, compared with granite aggregate. The reducing ratio of the compressive strength of 25mm core specimen is least when the maximum size of aggregate is 10mm. But the compressive strength of 50 and 100mm core specimen is almost not influenced by the maximum size of aggregate.

  • In many face recognition problems, the number of available images is limited compared to the dimension of the input space which is usually equal to the number of pixels. This problem is called as the 'small sample size' problem and regularization methods are typically used to solve this problem in feature extraction methods such as LDA. By using regularization methods, the modified within class matrix becomes nonsingu1ar and LDA can be performed in its original form. However, in the process of adding a scaled version of the identity matrix to the original within scatter matrix, the scale factor should be set heuristically and the performance of the recognition system depends on highly the value of the scalar factor. By using the proposed resampling method, we can generate a set of images similar to but slightly different from the original image. With the increased number of images, the small sample size problem is alleviated and the classification performance increases. Unlike regularization method, the resampling method does not suffer from the heuristic setting of the parameter producing better performance.

  • The importance of the evaluation and verification of small-size cogeneration system has been emphasized because there is no KS-code related to the small-size cogeneration system. The evaluation method of small-size engine cogeneration system was investigated by the reference of Japan evaluation code, JIS B-8122 and international standard organization, ISO-8528. Evaluation method was introduced such as start-test, rapid-load-up and rapid-load-down, etc. The evaluation method was applied to the 300kW small-size gas engine cogeneration system newly developed. The precise and strict evaluation and verification of the system will help the developing cogeneration system to optimum condition. It will also be a base document of KS-Code.

  • Piloti-type building is one of typical vertical atypical buildings. These buildings can fail by weak-story or flexible-story mechanism on the first story. They should be designed by taking into account the special seismic load, but those less than six stories are not required to confirm the seismic performance from structural engineers in Korea. For this reason, small-size pilloti-type RC buildings need to be checked for seismic performance. Based on this background, this study performed nonlinear dynamic analysis using the PERFORM-3D for small-size pilloti-type RC buildings and assessed their seismic performance. Examples are two through four story buildings with and without walls in the first story. The walls and columns in the first story satisfied the target performance in the basic of flexural behavior due to quite a large size and reinforcement. However, wall shear demands exceed shear strength in some buildings. When designed for KBC2009, wall shear strength exceed shear demand in some buildings, but still does not in others. Consequently, wall shear must be carefully checked in both existing and new small-size pilloti-type RC buildings.

  • Purpose: This study was performed to evaluate the effect of voxel size on the accuracy of landmark identification in cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) images. Materials and Methods: CBCT images were obtained from 15 dry human skulls with two different voxel sizes; 0.39 mm and 0.10 mm. Three midline landmarks and eight bilateral landmarks were identified by 5 examiners and were recorded as three-dimensional coordinates. In order to compare the accuracy of landmark identification between large and small voxel size images, the difference between best estimate (average value of 5 examiners' measurements) and each examiner's value were calculated and compared between the two images. Result: Landmark identification errors showed a high variability according to the landmarks in case of large voxel size images. The small voxel size images showed small errors in all landmarks. The landmark identification errors were smaller for all landmarks in the small voxel size images than in the large voxel size images. Conclusion: The results of the present study indicate that landmark identification errors could be reduced by using smaller voxel size scan in CBCT images.

  • The objective of the present study was to explore associations between five microsatellites linked to $Fec^B$ and $FecX^I$ genes and litter size in Small Tail Han sheep. The polymorphisms of five microsatellite loci, OarAE101, BM1329, BMS2508, TGLA54 and TGLA68 were detected in 244 ewes of Small Tail Han sheep. Analysis of association between three microsatellite loci (BMS2508, BM1329 and OarAE101) located in the 10 cM region covering the $Fec^B$ gene (Booroola gene) and litter size in Small Tail Han sheep indicated that BMS2508 had significant effect on litter size in the second parity (p<0.05), but no significant effect on litter size in the first parity (p>0.05), while the other two microsatellite loci had no significant effect on litter size in both the first and the second parity in Small Tail Han sheep (p>0.05). At microsatellite locus BMS2508, least squares means in the second parity of genotypes 101/111 and 99/109 were significantly higher than those of genotypes 99/99, 99/101, 99/111 and 99/115 (p<0.05); least squares mean in the second parity of genotype 101/111 was significantly higher than that of genotypes 109/111 and 111/111 (p<0.05). Results of this study also indicated that two microsatellite loci (TGLA54 and TGLA68) that confined the 28.7 cM region covering the $FecX^I$ gene (Inverdale gene) did not affect litter size in both the first and the second parity in Small Tail Han sheep significantly (p>0.05). The information found in the present study is very important for improving the reproductive performance in sheep breeds by marker assisted selection.

  • Dry water is a core-shell structured powder which comprises a very fine water core covered with hydrophobic silica particles. Recently, the dry water has attracted attention as a new type of fire extinguishing agents. However, characteristics of the dry water as a fire extinguishing agent have not been revealed until now. To our best knowledge, this is the first work to uncover effects of particle size of the dry water on the fire extinguishing performance. Pristine dry water, which has heterogeneous particle size distribution, was carefully separated by sieving method into three fractions which were a small size (ca. $110{\mu}m$) fraction, a medium size (ca. $220{\mu}m$) fraction and a large size (ca. $400{\mu}m$) fraction. Microscopic observations confirmed the effective separation of dry water's particle size. In extinguishing tests of wood cribs fire, the medium size dry water showed most excellent fire extinguishing performance, as compared to other dry waters having small (ca. $110{\mu}m$) and large (ca. $400{\mu}m$) particle size. The good performance of the medium size (ca. $220{\mu}m$) dry water may be attributed to the balance between cooling effect of the water core and smothering effect of the silica particles. It is also revealed that small size dry water has poor flowability than large size dry water.
