  • In July 2022 and 2023, black mold symptoms were observed sporadically on fruits of sweet pepper (Capsicum annuum) plants grown in a greenhouse located in Suwon, Korea. The incidence of black mold on the fruits was 5-24% (average 14.8%) in variety SP-504 (yellow and elongate type) and 1-8% (average 5%) in variety SP-505 (red and round type) investigated. Four single-conidium isolates of Alternaria sp. obtained from the diseased fruits were identified as Alternaria alternata based on the morphological characteristics and molecular phyogenetic analyses. The isolates were tested for pathogenicity to sweet pepper fruits of varieties SP-504 and SP-505 through artificial inoculation. The isolates mostly induced large lesions on fruits of the two varieties in the wound inoculation, but only two isolates small lesions on fruits of the variety SP-504 in the non-wound inoculation. No lesions formed on fruits of the variety SP-505 in the non-wound inoculation. The pathogenicity tests revealed that susceptibility of sweet pepper fruits to the disease differs between the varieties. The symptoms induced by pathogenicity tests with the isolates were similar to those observed on fruits from the greenhouse investigated. This is the first report of A. alternata causing black mold on sweet pepper fruits in Korea.

  • In this paper, the similarity criterion and dimensionless conversion method combined with the elasticity condition and Hooke's law are used to derive the functional relationship of the maximum effective value of the vibration velocity between the prototype pump and the model pump. The seawater circulation pump of a nuclear power plant is used as the prototype pump, and the model pump is obtained by performance conversion and choosing the appropriate scale, and the vibration state of the model pump under different flow rates is measured and analyzed. The vibration data of the model pump through the function relationship to find out the vibration parameters of the prototype model pump, and compare with the vibration data of the seawater circulation pump in reality. It can be seen that with the increase of flow rate, the maximum effective value of the vibration velocity of both model and prototype decreases and then increases, and the relative error is small, the maximum value is 7.7757%. Therefore, it can be considered that the functional relationship of model pump converted to prototype pump derived in this paper can be used to analyze the vibration of the actual seawater circulation pump of coastal nuclear power plant.

  • The interaction of short range zigzag single walled carbon nanotubes CNTs based on modified elasticity model is studied in this paper. The numerical accurate results are presented. Through this model the vibrational frequency of zigzag (5, 0), (12, 0) single-walled CNTs with certain end conditions are estimated. The natural frequencies of single walled carbon nanotubes are obtained by elasticity model. It is considered for various estimation of height-to-diameter ratio of zigzag tube. This simulation is performed to quantify small scale effects. Moreover, the natural frequencies increase by increasing the height-to-diameter ratio. These frequencies are very sensitive with low height-to-diameter ratio. The feasibility and effective use of present model is explained by comparison of outputs of earlier investigations.

  • Esophageal mucoepidermoid carcinoma (EMEC) is a special subtype of esophageal malignancy, accounting for less than 1% of all cases of primary esophageal carcinoma. Pathologically, it consists of a mixture of adenocarcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma with mucin-secreting cells. Special staining for mucicarmine helps to diagnose EMEC. We present a rare case of EMEC successfully treated via endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD). A 63-year-old man was referred to our tertiary hospital. On esophagogastroduodenoscopy, a 6-mm-sized subtle reddish depressed lesion was identified in the mid-esophagus. Diagnostic ESD was performed with a high suspicion of carcinoma. Histopathologic findings were consistent with EMEC which was confined to the lamina propria without lymphatic invasion. We plan to do a careful follow-up without administering adjuvant chemotherapy or radiotherapy. Due to the small volume of the lesion, establishing a diagnosis was difficult through forceps biopsy alone. However, by using ESD, we could confirm and successfully treat a rare case of early-stage EMEC.

  • This paper describes the design of the active optical compensation movements(at focal plane, secondary mirror) for the image stabilization of a small satellite camera. The movements can correct optical misalignment on-line and directly compensate vibration disturbances in the focal plane. Since the devices are installed inside the space camera, it has an remarkable advantage to deal with the structural deformation of a space camera effectively. In this paper, the requirements of the active optical compensation movements for 1m GSD small satellite camera have been analyzed. Based on the established requirements, the design of the active compensation movements have been conducted. The designed active optical compensation system can control 5 axes movements independently to compensate micro-vibration disturbances in the focal plane and to refocus the optical misaligned satellite camera.

  • This study is intended to develop evaluation indicators for the improvement and operation of R&D project management process. To achieve this, an empirical survey was carried out to small companies specializing in technology-centered R&D. First, 12 evaluation indicators showed that there was a deviation of more than 2 times from the highest score of 60.77 to the lowest score of 30 in integrated management, which the R&D project management process needs to be selectively used for the improvement and operation. Second, the difference in industry showed that the biotech industry was the highest, while the chemical, electrical and electronic industries were the lowest. Third, the difference in the number of employees showed that companies with 50~100 employees were relatively high, while small companies with more than 100 employees were somewhat low. Fourth, the difference in career showed that 5~7-year career was relatively high, while 7~10-year career was somewhat high. Overall, evaluation indicators for the improvement and operation of R&D project management processor showed that integrated management was the most important, followed by communication management, risk management, and time management. This implies that small companies specializing in technology-centered R&D need to concentrate on the importance of efficient integrated management and rapid decision-making and risk management among individual participation subjects.

  • Nucleolin (C23) is an important anti-apoptotic protein that is ubiquitously expressed in exponentially growing eukaryotic cells. In order to understand the impact of C23 in radiation therapy, we attempted to investigate the relationship of C23 expression with the radiosensitivity of human non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) cells. We investigated the role of C23 in activating the catalytic subunit of DNA-dependent protein kinase (DNA-PKcs), which is a critical protein for DNA double-strand breaks (DSBs) repair. As a result, we found that the expression of C23 was negatively correlated with the radiosensitivity of NSCLC cell lines. In vitro clonogenic survival assays revealed that C23 knockdown increased the radiosensitivity of a human lung adenocarcinoma cell line, potentially through the promotion of radiation-induced apoptosis and adjusting the cell cycle to a more radiosensitive stage. Immunofluorescence data revealed an increasing quantity of ${gamma}$-H2AX foci and decreasing radiation-induced DNA damage repair following knockdown of C23. To further clarify the mechanism of C23 in DNA DSBs repair, we detected the expression of DNA-PKcs and C23 proteins in NSCLC cell lines. C23 might participate in DNA DSBs repair for the reason that the expression of DNA-PKcs decreased at 30, 60, 120 and 360 minutes after irradiation in C23 knockdown cells. Especially, the activity of DNA-PKcs phosphorylation sites at the S2056 and T2609 was significantly suppressed. Therefore we concluded that C23 knockdown can inhibit DNA-PKcs phosphorylation activity at the S2056 and T2609 sites, thus reducing the radiation damage repair and increasing the radiosensitivity of NSCLC cells. Taken together, the inhibition of C23 expression was shown to increase the radiosensitivity of NSCLC cells, as implied by the relevance to the notably decreased DNA-PKcs phosphorylation activity at the S2056 and T2609 clusters. Further research on targeted C23 treatment may promote effectiveness of radiotherapy and provide new targets for NSCLC patients.

  • Objective: NBS1 plays a key role in the repair of DNA double-strand break (DSB). We conducted this study to investigate the effect of two critical polymorphisms (rs1805794 and rs13312840) in NBS1 on treatment response and prognosis of advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients with platinum-based chemotherapy. Methods: Using TaqMan methods, we genotyped the two polymorphisms in 147 NSCLC patients. Odds ratios (ORs) and their 95% confidential intervals (CIs) were calculated as a measure of difference in the response rate of platinum-based chemotherapy using logistic regression analysis. The Kaplan-Meier and log-rank tests were used to assess the differences in progression-free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS). Cox proportional hazards model was applied to assess the hazard ratios (HRs) for PFS and OS. Results: Neither of the two polymorphisms was significantly associated with treatment response of platinum-based chemotherapy. However, patients carrying the rs1805794 CC variant genotype had a significantly improved PFS compared to those with GG genotype (16.0 vs. 8.0 months, P = 0.040). Multivariable cox regression analysis further showed that rs1805974 was a significantly favorable prognostic factor for PFS [CC/CG vs. GG: Adjusted HR = 0.62, 95% CI: 0.39-0.99; CC vs. CG/GG: Adjusted HR = 0.56, 95% CI: 0.32-0.97). Similarly, rs13312840 with a small sample size also showed a significant association with PFS (CC vs. CT/TT: Adjusted HR = 25.62, 95% CI: 1.53-428.39). Conclusions: Our findings suggest that NBS1 polymorphisms may be genetic biomarkers for NSCLC prognosis especially PFS with platinum-based chemotherapy in the Chinese population.

  • We report a case of pulmonary adenocarcinoma complicated by the syndrome of inappropriate secretion of antidiuretic hormone (SIADH) following adjuvant chemotherapy. A 51-year-old woman with stage IIIA adenocarcinoma received left lower lobe lobectomy in July, 2006. And then combination chemotherapy with paclitaxel and cisplatin was given to the patient. In five days after completion of second cycle of the chemotherapy, she visited emergency room because of general weakness and seizure. Her brain MRI was shown to be no evidence of brain metastasis. Serum sodium, urine and plasma osmolarities were 117mEq/L, 589 and 244mOsm/kg, respectively. She was improved with fluid restriction. Although occurrence of SIADH following chemotherapy is rare, physician should give an attention the potential for development of SIADH in the course of chemotherapyin non-small cell lung cancer patient.
