  • Cold Forging has advantage in high accuracy and short working time. However large-skzed and complicated parts are difficult to process with cold forging. Thus large-sized and complicated parts have been processed with two pieces, or combind forging that is hot forging in addition to cold sizing. Recently, large-sized and complicated parts can be manufactured with cold forging alone by advanced cold forging technology using the long-stroke press. In this paper, cold forging technology of large-sized and complicated parts are investigated, including tripod slide housing for constant velocity joint and drive shaft for starter.

  • A new method for measuring fiber length and fiber coarseness was developed using image analysis technique. Measured fibers were transferred to a glass slide on a filter paper placed on a wire of the laboratory paper machine. After staining the fibers on the slide, mean fiber lengths and coarseness were measured by a commercial image analysis software, named KS400. The resultant data obtained from the image analysis displayed a close correlation with those from FS-200 and also showed excellent reproducibility as well as those from FS-200. The length of synthetic fibers over 10 mm long could be readily measured by this new analysis technique. Finally, a substantial improvement in precision for measuring fiber length and coarseness was made with less operator's effort for a given time.

  • Two color or cDNA microarrays are extensively used to study relative expression levels of thousands of genes simultaneously. 0かy two tissue samples can be hybridized on a single microarray slide. Thus, a microarray slide necessarily forms an incomplete block design with block size two when more than two tissue samples are under study. We also need to control for variability in gene expression values due to the two dyes. Thus, red and green dyes form the second blocking factor in addition to slides. General design problem for these microarray experiments is discussed in this paper. Designs for factorial cDNA microarrays are also discussed.

  • This paper describes a new method for the design of adaptive model-following control systems. This design concept is developed using the theory of slide mode. Authors present new results on the sliding control methodology to achieve accurate tracking for a class of multi-input multi-output, time-varying systems in the presence of parameter variations and disturbances. This algorithm can be easily applied to the multivariable control systems and obtained a smoother control signal in comparison to variable structure model following control systems. The design technique is easy and the control structure is simple. The design requires little computational effort. The control system is less sensitive to plant parameter variations and noise disturbances.

  • Recent research results on viscocapillary models of various pre-metered coating flows such as curtain, slide, and slot coatings have been reviewed in this paper. Such one-dimensional models have been simplified from two-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations for viscous coating flows with free surfaces, using integral momentum balances and lubrication approximation. It has been found that these viscocapillary models is capable of predicting flow dynamics in various coating systems, providing the good agreement with results by 2-D models.

  • Congenital tracheal stenosis is very rare, but it leads to life threatening obstruction in infancy and childhood. Recently, we experienced two cases of congenital tracheal stenosis, involving half of the distal trachea. We adopted slide tracheoplasty procedure Proposed by Peter Goldstraw Tracheoplasty was performed by dividing the stenosis at midpoint, incising the proximal and distal narrow segments vertically on opposite anterior and posterior surfaces, and sliding these together. On case 1, the patient':s now doing well. On case 2, the patient succumbed due to anastomotic disruption at postoperative ay 4.

  • Earthquake induced landslides have caused tens of thousands of deaths and billions of dollars of damage during the last century alone. Determining the potential seismic hazard presented by statically stable slopes is essential for the evaluation of substantial landslide movement during an earthquake. Newmark's method for estimating landslide displacement under dynamic loading was presented and applied to two case studies. A simplified energy-based method was then be developed to estimate the Newmark's displacement.

  • Slope failures can be occurred by complex mechanism. In this cases, failures shows characteristics of complex failure mechanism during progressive mass movements. A case is a merged large slide with two sliding events triggered by slip on fault plane. Another case shows extension of failure area by sliding or subsidence at backyards of toppling areas. Generally, areas of progressive failures have wider than them of simple events.

  • We can easily see the 'cycloid slide' in the many mathematics and science museums. The educational materials, however, do not give us any mathematical principle. For this reason, we, in this thesis, first study the brachistochrone problem in the history of mathematics, and suggest a method of how to teach the principle using 'the dynamic geometry software GSP5' in order to help students understand the idea that the cycloid is the brachistochrone. Secondly, we examine the origin of the calculus of variations and apply it to prove the brachistochrone problem in order to build up the teachers' background knowledge. This allows us to increase the worth of history of mathematics and recognize how useful the learning is which uses technological tools or materials, and we can expect that the learning which makes use of cycloid slide will be meaningful.

  • Proteins in highly oriented lipid bilayer samples are useful to study membrane protein structure determination. Planar lipid bilayers aligned and supported on glass slide were prepared. These stack of glass slide with planar lipid bilayers are not well fit for commercial solid-state NMR probe with round coil. Therefore, homebuilt solid-state NMR probe was built and used for a stack of thin glass plates and RF coil is wrapping directly around the flat square sample. The overall filling factor of the coil is much better and the large surface area enhances the extent to orientation by providing uniform environments for the phospholipids and the high ratio of circumference to area reduces edge effects. $^1H\;and\;^{15}N$ double resonance probe for 400 MHz NMR (9.4T) with a flat coil (coil size: 11 mm ${\times}$ 20 mm ${\times}$ 4 mm) is constructed and tested.
