Background: Although cranial electrotherapy stimulation (CES) is reported to have positive effects on mental functions such as depression and sleep improvement, detailed studies regarding awakening, attention and concentration among brain waves reflecting brain activity are lacking. Objective: To examine the effects of cranial electrotherapy stimulation (CES) on various electroencephalograms (EEGs) reflecting brain activities. Design: Randomized controlled clinical trial (single blind) Methods: This study selected 30 healthy adult women in their 20s who volunteered for this experiment. A total of 30 subjects were randomly assigned to three groups (Sham group, 0.5 Hz CES group, and 100 Hz CES group). EEGs were measured before and after the single CES, and the results were compared and analyzed. Results: The relative theta, alpha, and gamma waves indicated no significant differences in the interaction effects between time and group. The relative fast alpha wave only showed significant differences in the interaction effects between time and group in P4. The relative slow beta wave only indicated statistically significant differences in the interaction effects between time and group in T3 and T4. The relative mid and fast beta waves showed statistically significant differences in the interaction effects between time and group in all areas. Conclusions: These results suggest that a CES of 0.5 Hz awakens consciousness and has a positive influence on brain activity, while a CES of 100 Hz has a positive influence on thinking activity accompanying mental load during concentrating on one subject.
Purpose: The purpose of this study is to identify personal factors, social factors, and environmental factors related to physical activity in older adults in urban and non-urban areas. Methods: We used source data from the 2017 Community Health Survey. The subjects of this study included some older adults aged 65 and over, and analyzed the data of 23,043 older adults living in the urban and 34,063 older adults living in the non-urban area. Results: The common factors influencing physical activity in older adults by region include current smoking and drinking, BMI, sleep duration, and subjective health status, help with neighbors, frequency of meeting with neighbors and friends, participation in social and leisure activities, and falls experience (p<.001). However, the living environment, public transport satisfaction, and medical service use significantly associated with physical activity for only older adults living in the urban area (p<.001). Conclusion: In order to improve physical activity in older adults in the community, it is necessary to consider not only the improvement of individual factors that practice health behaviors but also health promotion strategies that take into account social and environmental factors because there are environmental differences among regions.
Objective : The purpose of this study is to report the improvement in a patient who had Tourette syndrome treated with Hoeyeoksan based on Shanghanlun provisions. Methods: The symptoms of the patient were checked on days 14, 34, 62, 82, 103, and 119 after administration of Hoeyeoksan. Tourette syndrome was evaluated using Yale Global Tic Severity Scale (YGTSS), and oversleep and constipation were evaluated using visual analog scale (VAS). In addition, new clinical implications for the interpretation of Shanghanlun provision 318 were reviewed. Results: Daily tics occurred ten times a day for 14 days after the initial diagnosis but decreased to eight times a day after 34 days, six times a day after 62 days, five times a day after 82 days, twice a day after 103 days, and once a day after 119 days after administration of Hoeyeoksan. Oversleep and constipation improved together with Tourette syndrome. Conclusions: In this study, we observed that Hoeyeoksan had a therapeutic effect by improving the chief complaint of the patient. Hence, the interpretation of Shanghanlun provision 318 must include a patient's behavioral and sleep patterns as predisposing factors of Tourette syndrome.
Objective: This study aimed to report the improvement of a patient with chronic insomnia who was treated with Baekho-tang based on the Shanghanlun disease pattern identification diagnostic system (DPIDS). Methods: The patient's symptoms were checked on days 19, 37, and 52 after taking Baekho-tang. Chronic insomnia was evaluated by the degree of insomnia, hours spent asleep, and the number of times the patient woke up during the night, which were all assessed by a visual analog scale (VAS) with the Leeds Sleep Evaluation Questionnaire. In addition, new clinical implications for the interpretation of the 350th Shanghanlun provision were reviewed. Results: After administering Baekho-tang for 52 days, based on the 350th Shanghanlun provision according to the DPIDS, the VAS score decreased from 10 to 1. Conclusions: The patient recovered from chronic insomnia. This case report suggests that the words "滑," "厥," and "裏" in the 350th provision of Shanghanlun mean physical and psychological causes of insomnia. In addition, Baekho-tang had a therapeutic effect in improving the chief complaint of the patient. Therefore, the interpretation of the 350th Shanghanlun provision requires a new definition that includes the patient's lifestyle, family conflict, and past history of the patient as a cause of chronic insomnia.
Objectives The purpose of this study is to review relevant clinical studies to investigate the effectiveness of herbal medicines for night terror in children. Methods Studies on herbal treatment for night terrors were searched and analyzed through electronic databases such as PubMed, China National Knowledge Infrastructure, Wanfang, CiNii, J-STAGE, Oriental Medicine Advanced Searching Integrated System and Science ON. Studies included Randomized controlled trials, case series, and case reports. Results A total of 25 studies were selected and analyzed. In most studies, improvement of night terrors was observed after treatment, such as high total effectiveness. In one study, the frequency of night terrors was decreased significantly in herbal medicine group. Conclusions Based on the results of the clinical studies, we identified that herbal medicine is an effective treatment for night terror. But it is considered necessary to prove the effect and safety through additional systematic clinical studies.
Purpose: This study aimed to explore the meaning of job experiences of fixed night shift nurses participating in a pilot project by a tertiary hospital, and to provide basic information for improving their night shift working environment. Methods: A descriptive qualitative study was conducted using individual interviews in September 2022. Three female nurses who worked fixed night shifts were recruited from a tertiary hospital. Data were analyzed using content analysis. Results: By analyzing the meaning of job experience as a fixed night shift nurse, four categories and nine subcategories were identified. The four categories of job experience of fixed night shift nurses were: expecting an improvement physical health due to predictable working hours, enjoying leisure time due to long off-duty hours, regretting for loosened relationships, and considering a successful settlement of fixed night shift nursing. Conclusion: As night shift work is essential for nurses to provide continuous nursing to patients, it is necessary to develop various strategies to improve the physical health of night shift nurses through fatigue management and good sleep quality, mental health through work-life harmony, and social health through intimate relationships between patients and coworkers.

In this study, six types of natural products, Prunus tomentosa (P. tomentosa), Akebia quinata (A. quinata), Prunus armeniaca (P. armeniaca), Smallanthus sonchifolius (S. sonchifolius), Citrus japonica (C. japonica), and Citrus australasica (C. australasica), were used to verify the effect of improving sleep and skin barriers by stress relief. As a result of the experiment, the production of cortisol, a stress hormone, was significantly inhibited by the P. tomentosa, C. australasica, A. quinata, and C. japonica among the six natural products. In addition, the expression of GAD67, a GABA-producing enzyme involved in sleep regulation, showed a significant increase in P. tomentosa purified water extract and C. australasica 50% ethanol extract, and the extract by each P. tomentosa solvent was found to have the highest total polyphenol content. Based on the results, the P. tomentosa extract with the highest activity was finally selected, and subsequent experiments were conducted. Among each P. tomentosa solvent extract, the DPPH radical scavenging activity was the highest in the 30% ethanol extract, and purified water extract increased GABA production and skin barrier factors filaggrin and claudin-1 expression the highest. HPLC analysis confirmed quercitrin as the main component of P. tomentosa extract, and quercitrin content by extraction solvent was high in the order of 30% ethanol > purified water > 70% ethanol > 50% ethanol. Quercitrin inhibited the production of cortisol in a concentration-dependent manner, significantly increasing GAD67 expression and GABA production, which had been reduced by cortisol. From the results of this study, it has been demonstrated that P. tomentosa can be used as a cosmetic material to help improve sleep and strengthen skin barriers by relieving stress.
