This study proposes a novel five-level three-phase hybrid-clamped converter composed of only six switches and one flying capacitor (FC) per phase. The capacitor-voltage-drift phenomenon of the converter under the classical sinusoidal pulse width modulation (SPWM) strategy is comprehensively analyzed. The average current, which flows into the FC, is a function of power factor and modulation index and does not remain at zero. Thus, a specific modulation strategy based on space vector modulation (SVM) is developed to balance the voltage of DC-link and FCs by injecting a common-mode voltage. This strategy applies the five-segment method to synthesize the voltage vector, such that switching losses are reduced while optional vector sequences are increased. The best vector sequence is then selected on the basis of the minimized cost function to suppress the divergence of the capacitor voltage. This study further proposes a startup method that charges the DC-link and FCs without any additional circuits. Simulation and experimental results verify the validity of the proposed converter, modulation strategy, and precharge method.
The modified sinusoidal pulse-width modulation (SPWM) is one of the PWM techniques used in three-phase AC-DC buck converters. The modified SPWM works without the current sensor (the converter is current sensorless), improves production of sinusoidal AC current, enables obtainment of near-unity power factor, and controls output voltage through modulation gain (ranging from 0 to 1). The main problem of the modified SPWM is the huge starting current and voltage (during transient) that results from a large step change from the reference voltage. When the load changes, the output voltage significantly drops (through switching losses and non-ideal converter elements). The single-input single-output (SISO) approach with minor-loop voltage feedback controller presented here overcomes this problem. This approach is created on a theoretical linear model and verified by discrete-model simulation on MATLAB/Simulink. The capability and effectiveness of the SISO approach in compensating start-up current/voltage and in achieving zero steady-state error were tested for transient cases with step-changed load and step-changed reference voltage for linear and non-linear loads. Tests were done to analyze the transient performance against various controller gains. An experiment prototype was also developed for verification.
This paper presents an implementation of selective harmonic elimination (SHE) modulation for a single-phase 13-level transistor-clamped H-bridge (TCHB) based cascaded multilevel inverter. To determine the optimum switching angle of the SHE equations, the Newton-Raphson method is used in solving the transcendental equation describing the fundamental and harmonic components. The proposed SHE scheme used the relationship between the angles and a sinusoidal reference waveform based on voltage-angle equal criteria. The proposed SHE scheme is evaluated through simulation and experimental results. The digital modulator based-SHE scheme using a field-programmable gate array (FPGA) is described and has been implemented on an Altera DE2 board. The proposed SHE is efficient in eliminating the $3^{rd}$, $5^{th}$, $7^{th}$, $9^{th}$ and $11^{th}$ order harmonics, which validates the analytical results. From the results, it can be seen that the adopted 13-level inverter produces a higher quality with a better harmonic profile and sinusoidal shape of the stepped output waveform.

This paper describes operating and capacitor voltage balancing of the modular multilevel converter. The paper focuses on sizing of the cell capacitor and establishes approximate expressions for the capacitor voltage. Simulations and experiments results obtained from three-level modular converter are used to demonstrate its viability in medium voltage applications. It is shown that the modular converter can operate over the full modulation index linear range independent of load power factor.
This paper presents a modified Space Vector Pulse Width Modulation Technique (SVPWM), which solves the well-known problem of voltage imbalance in the capacitors of a single-phase multilevel inverter. The proposed solution is based on the measurement of DC voltage levels at each capacitor of the inverter DC bus. The measurements are then used to adjust the size of the active vectors within the SVPWM algorithm to keep the voltage waveform sinusoidal regardless of any voltage imbalance on the DC link capacitors. When a voltage deviation exceeds a predetermined hysteresis band, the correspondent voltage vector is restricted to restore the voltage level to an acceptable threshold. Hence, the need for external voltage regulators for the voltage capacitors is eliminated. The functionality of the proposed algorithm is successfully demonstrated through simulations and experiments on a grid tied application.
The wavelet PWM (WPWM) technique has been applied in two-level inverters successfully, but directly applying the WPWM technique to three-level inverters is impossible. This paper proposes a WPWM technique suitable for a single-phase three-level inverter. The work analyzes the control strategy with the WPWM and obtains the design of its parameters. Compared with the SPWM technique for a single-phase three-level inverter under the same conditions, the WPWM can obtain high magnitudes of the output fundamental frequency component, low total harmonic distortion, and simpler digital implementation. The feasibility experiment is given to verify of the proposed WPWM technique.

This paper proposes the modulation and control of a three-to-six-phase matrix converter with an asymmetrical six-phase output. The matrix converter (MC) outputs consist of two sets of three-phase spatially shifted by $30^0$, where the two sets have two isolated neutrals. The space vector approach is considered for the modeling and subsequent modulation of the three-to-six phase MC. The intelligent selection of voltage space vectors is made to synthesize the reference voltages and to obtain a sinusoidal output. The dwell times of selected voltage space vectors are adjusted in such a way that the effect of the second and the third auxiliary plane vectors (i.e., x1-y1, and x2-y2) are nullified. To achieve the maximum output voltage gain and to ensure that no reactive power is drawn from the utility supply, the input side power factor is maintained at unity. Nevertheless, the source side power factor is controllable. The modulation technique is implemented in dSPACE working in conjunction with a FPGA. Hardware results that validate the proposed control algorithm are discussed.
Traction Motor is being transferred to the squirrel cage induction motor from D.C motor, by the improved power semiconductors like GTO, IGBT, etc. In the Induction Motor, inverter system must be used for delivering variable voltage variable frequency. But, by pulsating in the system the harmonics would be produced, and that cause the torque ripple and enfeeble the dynamic characteristics of the motor. So, to use the inverter system, we should take the torque ripple into consideration. To minimize the torque ripple in the VSI fed Traction Motor, the optimal pulsating was presented in this paper. By using the SPWM(Sinusoidal Pulse Width Modulation) method, feeding the appropriate pulse, we can minimize the torque ripple and improve the transient response.
Much attention has been given to EMI effects created in variable speed ac drive system. Zero switching states of inverter control invoke large common mode voltage. This paper focuses on the switching techniques to mitigate common mode voltage. This paper proposes a common-mode voltage reduction method based on sinusoidal pulse width modulation in three phase PWM inverter system. By using three carriers wave displaced by 120 degrees, it is possible to eliminate a common mode voltage pulse In one control period. Simulation and experimental results show that common mode voltages In the proposed technique are reduced more than conventional technique.
