  • Solid-state hydrogen storage is gaining prominence as a crucial subject in advancing the hydrogen-based economy and innovating energy storage technology. This storage method shows superior characteristics in terms of safety, storage, and operational efficiency compared to existing methods such as compression and liquefied hydrogen storage. In this study, we aim to evaluate the solid hydrogen storage performance on the nanotube surface by various structural design factors. This is accomplished through molecular dynamics simulations (MD) with the aim of uncovering the underlying ism. The simulation incorporates diverse carbon nanotubes (CNTs) - encompassing various diameters, multi-walled structures (MWNT), single-walled structures (SWNT), and boron-nitrogen nanotubes (BNNT). Analyzing the storage and effective release of hydrogen under different conditions via the radial density function (RDF) revealed that a reduction in radius and the implementation of a double-wall configuration contribute to heightened solid hydrogen storage. While the hydrogen storage capacity of boron-nitrogen nanotubes falls short of that of carbon nanotubes, they notably surpass carbon nanotubes in terms of effective hydrogen storage capacity.

  • This study aimed to investigate the impact of enhancing the electrode conductivity and mitigating the production of hydrogen peroxide - a by-product arising from lactate oxidation - on the performance of lactate electrodes. The electrical conductivity of the electrode was improved by modifying the surface of carbon paper with single-walled carbon nanotubes. Catalase was introduced to effectively eliminate the hydrogen peroxide produced during the lactate oxidation reaction. The carbon paper electrode, with simultaneous immobilization of both lactate oxidase and catalase, yielded a current 1.7 times greater than the electrode where only lactate oxidase was immobilized. The electrode in which lactate oxidase and catalase were co-immobilized on the surface of carbon paper modified with single-walled carbon nanotubes, produced a current of 171 µA, which was more than twice as much current as the carbon paper with only lactate oxidase immobilized. The optimized electrode showed a linear response up to lactate concentration of 20 mM, confirming that it can be used as a sensor electrode.

  • Field emission (FE) currents were measured for silver-pasted and glass-pasted single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) after illuminating the tubes with a pulsed 532 nm laser. A very low turn-on field of approximately 0.4 V/m m and a high current density ~1700 $\mu A/cm^2$ at 3.5 V/m m was obtained for the silver-pasted SWNTs after laser irradiation but on the whole, no improvements were found for the glass-pasted SWNTs. Two roles of laser irradiation for the silver-pasted SWNTs were proposed. First, the embedded SWNTs and SWNT bundles inside the silver paste were immerged on the outer surface due to an instantaneous melting or annealing of the silver metals by the laser resulting in an increase of the field emission sites. Second, the laser irradiation was thought to improve the electrical contact between SWNTs and the silver metal by reducing the contact resistance via laser-induced thermal annealing, which was responsible for increasing the FE currents.

  • We suggest a CNT-based gas sensor for breath alcohol measurement. The sensor was composed of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) thin film on flexible PES (polyethersulfone) substrate, and the SWCNTs thin film was formed by multiple spray-coating with SWCNTs solution which was well-dispersed, highly controlled and functionalized in ethanol solvent. In this work, three types of SWCNTs thin films were deposited with changes in the number of spray-coatings to 20, 40 and 60 times in order to compare electrical response properties of the SWCNTs thin films. from the fabricated sensors, conductance and capacitance responses were measured and discussed. Alcohol gas sensors have been commercialized widely as gauge for breath alcohol measurement which is applicable to checking whether car drivers are drinking-driving or not. Our alcohol gas sensors showed good sensitivity and linearity even at room temperature.

  • We report on the NO gas sensing properties of Al-doped zinc oxide-carbon nanotube (ZnO-CNT) wire-like layered composites fabricated by coaxially coating Al-doped ZnO thin films on randomly oriented single-walled carbon nanotubes. We were able to wrap thin ZnO layers around the CNTs using the pulsed laser deposition method, forming wire-like nanostructures of ZnO-CNT. Microstructural observations revealed an ultrathin wire-like structure with a diameter of several tens of nm. Gas sensors based on ZnO-CNT wire-like layered composites were found to exhibit a novel sensing capability that originated from the genuine characteristics of the composites. Specifically, it was observed by measured gas sensing characteristics that the gas sensors based on ZnO-CNT layered composites showed a very high sensitivity of above 1,500% for NO gas in dry air at an optimal operating temperature of $200^{\circ}C$; the sensors also showed a low NO gas detection limit at a sub-ppm level in dry air. The enhanced gas sensing properties of the ZnO-CNT wire-like layered composites are ascribed to a catalytic effect of Al elements on the surface reaction and an increase in the effective surface reaction area of the active ZnO layer due to the coating of CNT templates with a higher surface-to-volume ratio structure. These results suggest that ZnO-CNT composites made of ultrathin Al-doped ZnO layers uniformly coated around carbon nanotubes can be promising materials for use in practical high-performance NO gas sensors.

  • High-quality single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) were synthesized by catalytic decomposition of $C_2H_2$ using Fe-Mo/MgO catalyst at $800^{\circ}C$. The as-synthesized SWCNTs typically occurred in the form of a bundle with a diameter of 10~20 nm together with amorphous carbon and catalytic impurities, which were removed by a two-step purification process consisting of oxidation and an acid treatment. The oxidation step, using an $O_2$-Ar mixture at $380^{\circ}C$ for 5 hr in a vertical-type furnace and a $HNO_3$ treatment at $100^{\circ}C$ for one hour, was utilized to remove the amorphous carbon particles. Subsequently, metallic catalysts were removed in HCl at room temperature for 5 hr under magnetic stirring. The SWCNT suspension was prepared by dispersing the purified SWCNTs in an aqueous sodium dodecyl benzene sulfonate solution with horn-type sonication. This was then air-sprayed on glass to fabricate CNT field emitters. The samples had a turn-on field value of 4 V/${\mu}m$ and a current density of 0.67 mA/$cm^2$ at 9 V/${\mu}m$. Increasing the HCl treatment time improved the field emission properties.

  • The calculation of the natural frequencies versus Young's modulus of carbon nanotubes with modified continuum shell is the subject of current research. When designing these tubes, it is important to understand their frequencies because excessive vibrations might cause fatigue. These tubes are designed and built to meet specific needs and have been suitably modified to investigate their vibratory response. There are numerous uses for carbon nanotube free vibration analysis in the mechanical sciences. The fundamental frequency with Young's modulus for clamped-free and simply supported end conditions, which is connected to the carbon nanotubes, is calculated theoretically for chiral single carbon nanotubes. When Young's modulus rises, so does the frequency curve pattern. Young's modulus influences the single-walled carbon nanotube's dynamic response by simulating it as a modified continuum shell. The Young's modulus of chiral tube and the value of frequency increased as the chiral tube's index increased. The results are checked against past studies to ensure the problem's validity and are determined to be accurate.

  • The bending and buckling effect for carbon nanotube-reinforced composite (CNTRC) beams can be evaluated by developing the theory of third shear deformation (TSDT). This study examines beams supported by viscoelastic foundations, where single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) are dispersed and oriented within a polymer matrix. Four patterns of reinforcement are used for the CNTRC beams. The rule of mixtures is assessed for the material properties of CNTRC beams. The effective functionally graded materials (FGM) properties are studied by considering three different uneven distribution types of porosity. The damping coefficient is considered to investigate the viscosity effect on the foundation in addition to Winkler's and Pasternak's parameters. The accuracy of the current theory is inspected with multiple comparison works. Moreover, the effects of different beam parameters on the CNTRC beam bending and buckling over a viscoelastic foundation are discussed. The results demonstrated that the O-beam is the weakest type of CNTRC beam to resist buckling and flexure loads, whereas the X-beam is the strongest. Moreover, it is indicated that the presence of porosity in the beams decreases the stiffness and increases deflection. In comparison, the deflection was reduced in the presence of a viscoelastic foundation.

  • In the present study, vibration analysis of functionally graded carbon nanotube reinforced composite (FGCNTRC) plate moving in two directions is investigated. Various types of shear deformation theories are utilized to obtain more accurate and simplest theory. Single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) are selected as a reinforcement of composite face sheets inside Poly methyl methacrylate (PMMA) matrix. Moreover, different kinds of distributions of CNTs are considered. Based on extended rule of mixture, the structural properties of composite face sheets are considered. Motion equations are obtained by Hamilton's principle and solved analytically. Influences of various parameters such as moving speed in x and y directions, volume fraction and distribution of CNTs, orthotropic viscoelastic surrounding medium, thickness and aspect ratio of composite plate on the vibration characteristics of moving system are discussed in details. The results indicated that thenatural frequency or stability of FGCNTRC plate is strongly dependent on axially moving speed. Moreover, a better configuration of the nanotube embedded in plate can be used to increase the critical speed, as a result, the stability is improved. The results of this investigation can be used in design and manufacturing of marine vessels and aircrafts.
