Demand for low-input sustainable crop cultivation is increasing to meet the need for environment-friendly agriculture. Consequently, developing genotypes with high nutrient use efficiency is one of the major objectives of crop breeding programs. This study was conducted to identify QTLs for traits associated with physiological nitrogen use efficiency (PNUE). A recombinant inbred population (DT-RILs) between Dasanbyeo (a tongil type rice, derived from an indica ${\times}$ japonica cross and similar to indica in its genetic make-up) and TR22183 (a Chinese japonica variety) consisting of 166 $F_8$ lines was developed and used for mapping. A frame map of 1,409 cM containing 113 SSR and 103 STS markers with an average interval of 6.5 cM between adjacent marker loci was constructed using the DT-RILs. The RILs were cultivated in ordinary-N ($N-P_2O_5-K_2O=100-80-80kg/ha$) and low-N ($N-P_2O_5-K_2O=50-80-80kg/ha$) (100 kg/ha) conditions. PNUE was positively correlated with the harvest index and grain yield in both conditions. Twenty single QTLs (S-QTLs) and 58 pairs of epistatic loci (E-QTLs) were identified for the nitrogen concentration of grain, nitrogen concentration of straw, nitrogen content of shoot, harvest index, grain yield, straw yield and PNUE in both conditions. The phenotypic variance explained by these S-QTLs and E-QTLs ranged from 11.1 to 44.3% and from 16.0% to 63.6%, respectively. The total phenotypic variance explained by all the QTLs for each trait ranged from 35.8% to 71.3%, showing that the expression of PNUE and related characters depends signify- cantly upon genetic factors. Both S-QTLs and E-QTLs may be useful for marker-assisted selection (MAS) to develop higher PNUE genotypes.

The grain-boundary microcracking materials in the system $Al_2$TiO$_{5}$ -ZrTiO$_4$(ZAT) is influenced by the thermal expansion anisotropy. The range of ZAT compositions investigated had showed very low thermal expansions of 0.3~1.3$\times$10$^{-6}$ K loin compared to 8.29$\times$10$^{6}$ K of pure ZrTiO$_4$and 0.68$\times$10$^{6}$ K of polycrystalline $Al_2$TiO$_{5}$ , respectively, compared with the theoretical thermal expansion coefficient for a single crystal of $Al_2$TiO$_{5}$ , 9.70$\times$10$^{6}$ K. The low thermal expansion and microcraking temperature are apparently due to a combination of thermal contraction and expansion caused by the large thermal expansion anisotropy of the crystal a ies of the $Al_2$TiO$_{5}$ phase.

A gene encoding squalene synthase from grain amaranth was cloned and characterized. The full-length cDNA was 1805-bp long and contained a 1248-bp open reading frame encoding a protein of 416 amino acids with a molecular mass of 47.6 kDa. Southern blot analysis revealed that the A. cruentus genome contained a single copy of the gene. Comparison of the cDNA and genomic sequences indicated that the amaranth SQS gene had 12 introns and 13 exons. All of the exons contributed to the coding sequence. The predicted amino acid sequence of the SQS cDNA shared high homology with those of SQSs from several other plants. It contained conserved six domains that are believed to represent crucial regions of the active site. We conducted qRT-PCR analyses to examine the expression pattern of the SQS gene in seeds at different developmental stages and in several tissues. The amaranth SQS gene was low levels of SQS transcripts at the initial stage of seed development, but the levels increased rapidly at the mid-late developmental stages before declining at the late developmental stage. These findings showed that the amaranth SQS is a late-expressed gene that is rapidly expressed at the mid-late stage of seed development. In addition, we observed that the SQS mRNA levels in stems and roots increased rapidly during the four- to six-leaf stage of development. Therefore, our results showed that the expression levels of SQS in stem and root tissues are significantly higher than those in leaf tissues. In present study provides useful information about the molecular characterization of the SQS clone isolated from grain amaranth. Finally, a basic understanding of these characteristics will contribute to further studies on the amaranth SQS.

The grain-boundary microcracking materials in the system A1$_2$Ti $O_{5}$ -ZrTi $O_4$(ZAT) is influenced by the thermal expansion anisotropy. BaTiO3 powder was synthesized by a solid-state reaction using BaCO3 and TiO2. Different calcination temperatures (800℃, 850℃, 900℃, and 950℃) were set to investigate their effects on the properties of BaTiO3 powder. The synthesized BaTiO3 phase was confirmed to be a single phase by XRD, and the tetragonality (c/a) and crystallite size were calculated. Thereafter, each calcinated BaTiO3 was sintered at five different sintering temperatures (1,100℃, 1,150℃, 1,200℃, 1,250℃, and 1,300℃), and the tetragonality, density, porosity, dielectric constant, and grain size were measured. As the calcination temperature increased, the tetragonality and crystallite size also increased, to 1.008 and 66 nm, respectively, at 950℃. Moreover, most pellets showed increased density, dielectric constant, and tetragonality as the sintering temperature increased up to 1,250℃; the same parameters slightly decreased at 1,300℃. It is noteworthy that the tetragonality of BaTiO3 at 1,250℃ exhibits a very high c/a value of 1.0084. In addition, the grain size and dielectric constant measured near the Curie temperature increased as the sintering temperature increased.
This study is concerned with tensile and Charpy impact properties of high-strength bainitic steels fabricated by controlled rolling process. Six kinds of steels were fabricated by varying finish rolling temperature, start cooling temperature, and cooling rate, and their microstructures and tensile and Charpy impact properties were investigated. Their effective grain sizes were also characterized by the electron backscatter diffraction analysis. The microstructures of the steels rolled in the single phase region were most similar to those of the steels rolled in the two phase region. The steels cooled from $700{^{\circ}C}$ were composed mainly of granular bainites, while those cooled from $600{^{\circ}C}$ contained a number of bainitic ferrites, which resulted in the decrease in ductility and upper shelf energy in spite of the increase in strength. In the steels cooling from $600^{\circ}C$, fine acicular ferrites were well formed when the cooling rate was slow, which led to the best combination of high ductility, high upper shelf energy, and low energy transition temperature according to the decrease in the overall effective grain size due to the presence of acicular ferrites having smaller effective grain size.

A total of 41 microsatellite markers were used with 29 genotypes to examine the relationship between SSR polymorphisms and N-use efficiency related traits with a goal to identify the putative QTLs related to these traits. These primers yielded a total of 183 alleles (average 4.46 alleles per primer), and polymorphism information content (PIC) values of the SSRs ranged from 0.119 to 0.805 with mean value of 0.425. Correlation coefficients were obtained among the four N-use efficiency traits in the 34 accessions and significant positive correlations of relative ratios between grain yield and harvest index (r=0.3404) and total dry matter (r=0.7976), while N uptake showed a moderate level of correlation with the ratios of the grain yield and total dry matter, respectively. 36.5% (15/41) SSR markers were monomorphic among the 25 japonica accessions out of the 29 accessions. Association between SSR genotypes and phenotypic performances from the total (29) or japonica (25) accessions was tested based on a single point analysis. Three putative QTL regions were detected for the ratio of grain yield. These include the chromosomal region containing the RM283 locus on chromosome 1 and RM25 on chromosome 8 (all and japonica accessions) and the region with the SSR marker, RM206 on chromosome 11 (the japonica accessions). For the total dry matter ratio, two chromosomal regions were identified as the putative QTL region. One is the region with the SSR marker, RM162 on chromosome 6 (all and japonica accessions) and the other was the one with the SSR marker RM25 on chromosome 8 (the japonica accessions). Among these markers, RM25 showed associations with both traits.

Wheat is rich in sources of fiber, oligosaccharides, and resistant starch, simple carbohydrates which may have a protective role against carcinoma. Additionally, Whole wheat/bran as well includes contains phytochemicals such as flavonoids, lignans, folate, phytosterols, phenolic acids, and tocols. The above phytochemicals suitable forms antioxidant and cholesterol-reducing activities. Phytoestrogens are regarded as especially essential in the preventative measures of hormonally dependent malignancies such as breast cancer (BC). In this study lowered BC risk has been associated with whole grain/bran consumption with an odds ratio (OR=0.24 and 95 %CI=0.10-0.56). Wheat/bran appears to have a reliable protective impact against BC. While intake of white bread has been associated with a high risk of BC (OR=2.63 and CI 95 %=1.07-6.48). Also, the E-Selectin (SELE) Single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) rs5353 A/G and rs932307 C/T were investigated using the sanger sequences approach. There was a positive association between genotypes (rs5353 GG+AG) and (rs932307 TT+CT) with rate consumption of wheat-white/bread and these genotypes were more frequent in patients had BC in comparison with a significant difference (P=0.03) (P=0.01), respectively. The genotypes (GG+AG) frequency of the rs5353 polymorphism and (TT+CT) genotypes of the rs932307 polymorphism in the present study had a high risk of cancer with (OR=3.05), (OR=4.17) respectively. While these genotypes showed no significant association with the rate of whole grain consumption in patients and control. Therefore, the type of wheat may associate with increased incidence of disease-related with type of Polymorphism because some present genotypes of SNPs showed high (OR) which may refer to their positive associated with disease, the white wheat consumption may active the risky association between SNPs and BC.
These studies were carried out to evaluate the feasibility of using Alkali Digestibility Value (ADV) of soybean seeds as a selection criterion for cooking quality of soybean grain with rice, and to find out an optimal testing condition, varietal differences in ADV and the effect of cultural environment on the ADV, and its mode of inheritance. The ADV test was achieved succesfully by soaking the soybean grain for 24 hours in 25 to 30% KOH solution at 25 to $30^{\circ}C$. Varietal differences in the ADV were conspicuous, but cultural conditions affected the ADV little. All collected lines for cooking with rice showed high ADV and all the small grain cultivars introduced from abroad had low ADV, while recommended cultivars showed great variation in ADV. The characteristic of low ADV in soybean grains was controlled by single dominant gene.

It is well known that polycrystalline ceramics fabricated via the templated grain growth method along a desired crystallographic direction, generally along [001], exhibits enhanced piezoelectric response. Generally, the piezoelectric properties of textured ceramics depend on the degree of texture, as piezoelectric properties peak in single crystals. Therefore, understanding the relationship between the degree of texture and piezoelectric properties is fundamental. Here, we present state-of-the-art textured piezoceramics by focusing on critical issues such as the quality of templates used for texturing and proper evaluation of the degree of texture analysis. The relationship between the degree of texture and its impact on the properties of textured materials is exclusively defined by the Lotgering factor (L.F.) calculated from the X-ray diffraction profiles. Additionally, we show that L.F. is not a suitable indicator of the degree of texture, contrary to previous interpretations. This statement was further supported by the fact that the true degree of texture can be better quantified by the multiples of random distribution. This argument was justified by comparing the quantitative values of the degree of texture obtained from both methods to those of the piezoelectric charge coefficient of textured and random ceramics.
