A moored barge alongside quay can be influenced by a nearby passing ship and its ship-generated waves. In this study, a time-domain numerical method based on a three-dimensional potential flow solver is developed to investigate the passing ship problem with a moored barge alongside quay. Potential flows around the passing ship and the moored barge alongside a quay is directly solved by using a classical finite element method. Total computational meshes including a passing ship, a moored barge and a quay is updated at each step with an efficient re-mesh algorithm. To validate the developed numerical method, a conventional ship wave problem and a passing ship problem on the open sea has been solved and the solutions are compared with the existing data. Then, a series of numerical computations were carried out to investigate the passing ship effect on a moored barge alongside quay. The characteristics of the passing ship effects are studied with varying the simulation parameters such as passing ship speed, separation distance, wall distances and waves. Focus is made on hydrodynamic forces due to the passing ship effect and its ship waves.

No-load speed is an important performance factor for the safe operation of hydropower systems. In turbine design, the manufacturers must conduct several model tests to calculate the accurate value of no-load speed for the complete range of operating conditions, which are expensive and time-consuming. The present study presents steady and unsteady methods for calculating no-load speed of a Francis turbine. The steady simulations are implemented using a commercial flow solver and an iterative algorithm that relies on a smooth relation between turbine torque and speed factor. The unsteady method uses unsteady RANS simulations that have been integrated with a user subroutine to compute and return the value of runner speed, time step and friction torque. The main goal of this research is to evaluate and compare the two methods by calculating turbine dynamic parameters for three test cases consisting of high and medium head Francis turbines. Overall, the numerical results agreed well with experimental data. The unsteady method provided more accurate results in the opening angle range from 20 to 26 degrees. Nevertheless, the steady results showed more consistency than unsteady results for the three different test cases at different operating conditions.
The artificial compressibility (AC) method for the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations in the generalized curvilinear coordinates using the primitive form is implemented. The main advantage of the AC approach is that the resulting system of equations resembles the system of compressible N-S equations and can thus be integrated in time using standard, well-established time-marching methods. The errors, which are the odd-even oscillation, for pressure field in using the artificial compressibility can be eliminated by using the $4^{th}$ order artificial dissipation term which is explicitly included. Even though this paper focuses exclusively on 2D laminar flows to validate and assess the performance of this solver, this numerical method is general enough so that it can be readily extended to carry out 3D URANS simulation of engineering flows. This algorithm yields practically identical velocity profiles and primary vortex and secondary vortices that are in excellent overall agreement with the results of the vorticity-stream function formulation (Ghia et al., 1982). However, the grid resolution have to be required to be large enough to express the various vortices.
A simple, accurate and efficient mesh generation technique, the cut-cell method, is able to represent an arbitrarily complex geometry. Both structured and unstructured grid meshes are used in this method. First, the numerical domain is constructed with regular Cartesian grids as a background grid and then the solid boundaries or bodies are cut out of the background Cartesian grids. As a result, some boundary cells can be contained two numerical conditions such as the flow and solid conditions, where the special treatment is needed to simulate such physical characteristics. The HLLC approximate Riemann solver, a Godunov-type finite volume method, is employed to discretize the advection terms in the governing equations. Also, the TVD-WAF method is applied on the Cartesian cut-cell grids to stabilize numerical results. Present method is validated for the rectangular dam break problems. Initially, a conventional grid is constructed with the Cartesian regular mesh only and then applied to the dam-break flow simulation. As a comparative simulation, a cut-cell grids are applied to represent the flow domain rotated with arbitrary angles. Numerical results from this study are compared with the results from the case of the Cartesian regular mesh only. A good agreement is achieved with other numerical results presented in the literature.
This paper presents a study of the effects of the free surface to marine propeller including the mesh effect of the models. In the present study, we conduct the numerical simulation for propeller performance employing the openwater test. The numerical simulations compare the meshing strategies for the propeller and show the effects on both thrust and torque. OpenFOAM is applied to solve the propeller problem and then open water performances of KCS propeller (KP505) are estimated using a Reynold-averaged Navier-Stokes equations (RANS) solver and the turbulence of the $K-{\omega}$ SST model. Unstructured meshes are used in the numerical simulation employing hexahedral meshing for mesh generation. The arbitrary mesh interfacing (AMI) and multiple rotating frame (MRF) are compared to define the best meshing strategy. The meshing strategies are evaluated through 3 classifications, i.e., coarse, medium, and fine mesh. Thus, the propeller can be performed utilizing the best mesh strategy. The computational results are validated by comparison with the experimental results. The $K_T$, $K_Q$, and efficiency of the propeller are compared to an experimental result and for all of the meshing strategies. Thus, the simulations show the influence of meshing in order to perform the propeller performances.
The objective of this study is to evaluate the prediction accuracy of development large eddy simulation(LES) program for turbulent flow behind a bluff-body. The LES solver was implemented on parallel computer consisting 16 processors. To verify the capability of LES code, the results were compared with those of Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes(RANS) using standard ${\kappa}-{\varepsilon}$ model as well as experimental data. The results showed that the LES and RANS qualitatively well predicted the experimental results, such as mean axial, radial velocities and turbulent kinetic energy. In the quantitative analysis, however, the LES showed a better prediction performance than RANS. Specially, the LES well described characteristics of the recirculation zones, such as air stagnation point and jet stagnation point. Finally, the unsteady phenomena on the Bluff-body, such as the transition of recirculation region and vorticity, was examined with LES methodology.
Numerical methods are applied to simulate the smoke behavior in a ventilated tunnel using large eddy simulation (LES) which is incorporated in FDS (Fire Dynamics Simulator) with proper combustion and radiation model. In this study, present numerical results are compared with data obtained from experiments on pool fires in a ventilated tunnel. The model tunnel is $182m(L){\times}5.4m(W){\times}2.4m(H)$. Two fire scenarios with different ventilation rates are considered with two different fire strengths. The present results are analyzed with those from LES without combustion and radiation model and from RANS ($\kappa-\epsilon$) model as well. Temperature distributions caused by fire in tunnel are compared with each other. It is found that thermal stratification and smoke back-layer can be predicted by FDS and the temperature predictions by FDS show better results than LES without combustion and radiation model. The FDS solver, however, failed to predict correct flow pattern when the high ventilation rate is considered in tunnel because of the defects in the tunnel-inlet turbulence and the near-wall turbulence.
In recent years, scientific community has found renewed interest in hypersonic flight research. These hypersonic vehicles undergo severe aero-thermal environment during their flight regimes. During reentry and hypersonic flight of these vehicles through atmosphere real gas effects come into play. The analysis of such hypersonic flows is critical for proper aero-thermal design of these vehicles. The numerical simulation of hypersonic real gas flows is a very challenging task. The present work emphasizes numerical simulation of hypersonic flows with thermal non-equilibrium. Hyperbolic system of equations with stiff relaxation method are identified in recent literature as a novel method of predicting long time behaviour of systems such as gas at high temperature. In present work, Energy Relaxation Method (ERM) has been considered to simulate the real gas flows. Navier-Stokes equations A numerical scheme Advection Upstream Splitting Method (AUSM) has been selected. Navier-Stokes solver along with relaxation method has been used for the simulation of real flow over a circular cylinder. Pressure distribution and heat flux over the surface of cylinder has been compared with experiment results of Hannemann. Present heat flux results over the cylinder compared well with experiment. Thus, real gas effects in hypersonic flows can be modeled through energy relaxation method.
Yhis paper describes a fault diagnosis simulation of the Real-Time Multiple Fault Dignosis System (RTMFDS) for forcasting faults in a system and deciding current machine state from signal information. Comparing with other diagnosis system for single fault, the system developed deals with multiple fault diagnosis, comprising two main parts. One is a remotesignal generating and transimission terminal and the other is a host system for fault diagnosis. Signal generator generate the random fault signal and the image information, and send this information to host. Host consists of various modules and agents such as Signal Processing Module(SPM) for sinal preprocessing, Performence Monotoring Module(PMM) for subsystem performance monitoring, Trigger Module(TM) for multi-triggering subsystem fault diagnosis, Subsystem Fault Diagnosis Agent(SFDA) for receiving trigger signal, formulating subsystem fault D\ulcornerB and initiating diagnosis, Fault Diagnosis Module(FDM) for simulating component fault with Hierarchical Artificial Neural Network (HANN), numerical models and Hofield network,Result Agent(RA) for receiving simulation result and sending to Treatment solver and Graphic Agent(GA). Each agent represents a separate process in UNIX operating system, information exchange and cooperation between agents was doen by IPC(Inter Process Communication : message queue, semaphore, signal, pipe). Numerical models are used to deseribe structure, function and behavior of total system, subsystems and their components. Hierarchical data structure for diagnosing the fault system is implemented by HANN. Signal generation and transmittion was performed on PC. As a host, SUN workstation with X-Windows(Motif)is used for graphic representation.
