As advanced earthquake analysis/design methods such as the nonlinear static analysis are developed, it is required to estimate precisely the cyclic behavior of reinforced concrete members that is characterized by strength, deformability, and capacity of energy dissipation. However, currently, estimation of energy dissipation depends on empirical equations that are not sufficiently accurate, or experiment and sophisticated numerical analysis which are difficult to use in practice. In the present study, nonlinear finite element analysis was performed to investigate the behavioral characteristics of flexure-dominant RC members under cyclic load. The effects of axial force, arrangement of reinforcing bars, and reinforcement ratio on the cyclic behavior were studied. Based on the investigation, a simplified method to estimate the capacity of energy dissipation was proposed, and it was verified by the comparison with the finite element analyses and experiments. The proposed method can estimate the energy dissipation of RC members more precisely than currently used empirical equations, and it is easily applicable in practice.
In this paper, a multi-step optimization using a G.A. (Genetic Algorithm) with variable penalty function is introduced to the structural design optimization of a 5-head route machine. Our design procedure consist of two design optimization stage. The first stage of the design optimization is static design optimization. The following stage is dynamic design optimization stage. In the static optimization stage, the static compliance and weight of the structure are minimized simultaneously under some dimensional constraints and deflection limits. On the other hand, the dynamic compliance and the weight of the machine structure are minimized simultaneously in the dynamic design optimization stage. As the results, dynamic compliance of the 5-head router machine was decreased by about 37% and the weight of the structure was decreased by 4.48% respectively compared with the simplified structure model.

In this paper, a thoery for the static analysis of large plastic deformations of 3-dimentional frames, aiming at application to the collapse analysis of ship structures, is presented. In the frame analysis formulation, effects of shear deformations are included. A plastic hinge is inserted into the field of a beam and post-failure deformation of the plastic hinge is characterized by finite rotations and extensions. In order to model deep web frames of ship's structures into a framed structures, collapse of thin-walled plate girders is investigated. The proposed analysis method is applied to several ship structural models in the references.
Concrete is popular as a building material, however it is inherently brittle and performs poorly during earthquakes if nor reinforced properly. Traditional retrofit design techniques assume that buildings respond elastically to earthquakes. This assumption simplifies the analysis procedure but can lead to an erroneous conclusion. The complete nonlinear time history analysis is considered overly complex and impractical for general use. Simplified nonlinear analysis methods, referred to as nonlinear static analysis procedures, include the capacity spectrum method(CSM) developed in detail at ATC-40 and the displacement coefficient method(DCM) utilized at FEMA-273. In this study wall APT system. The results were compared and analyzed. The program used was neaMAX-3D to express nonlinear material.
Among all the natural disasters, earthquakes are the most destructive calamities since they cause a plenty of injuries and economic losses leaving behind a series of signs of panic. The present study highlights the moment-curvature relationships for the structural elements such as beam and column elements and Non-Linear Static Pushover Analysis of RC frame structures since it is a very simplified procedure of non-linear static analysis. The highly popular model namely Mander's model and Kent and Park model are considered and then, seismic risk evaluation of RC building has been conducted using SAP 2000 version 17 treating uncertainty in strength as a parameter. From the obtained capacity and demand curves, the performance level of the structure has been defined. The seismic fragility curves were developed for the variations in the material strength and damage state threshold are calculated. Also the comparison of experimental and analytical results has been conducted.
This paper presents a comparative structural analysis of lattice hybrid tower with six legs with conventional tubular steel tower for an onshore wind turbine using finite element method. Usually a lattice hybrid tower will have a conventional industry standard 'L' profile section for the lattice construction with four legs. In this work, the researcher attempted to identify and analyze the strength of six legged lattice hybrid tower designed with a special profile instead of four legged L profile. And to compare the structural benefits of special star profile with the conventional tubular tower. Using Ansys, a commercial FEM software, both static and dynamic structural analyses were performed. A simplified finite element model that represents the wind turbine tower was created using Shell elements. An ultimate load condition was applied to check the stress level of the tower in the static analysis. For the dynamic analysis, the frequency extraction was performed in order to obtain the natural frequencies of the tower.
Due to the scarcity of extortionate experimental data, fatigue failure of the reinforced concrete (RC) element might be achieved economically adopting nonlinear finite element (FE) analysis as an alternative approach. However, conventional implicit dynamic analysis is expensive, quasi-static method overlooks interaction effects and inertia, direct cyclic analysis computes stabilized responses. Apart from this, explicit dynamic analysis may provide a numerical operating system for factual long-term responses. The study explores the fatigue behavior based on a simplified explicit dynamic solution employing nonlinear time domain analysis. Among fourteen RC beams, one beam is selected to validate under static loading, one under fatigue with the experimental study and other twelve to check the detail fatigue behavior. The SWOT (Strength, Weakness, Opportunities, Threats) analysis has been carried out to pinpoint the detail scenario in the adoption of numerical approach as an alternative to the experimental study. Excellent agreement of FE and experimental results is seen. The 3D nonlinear RC beam model at service fatigue limits is truthful to be used as an expedient contrivance to envisage the precise fatigue behavior. The simplified analysis approach for RC beam under fatigue offers savings in computation to predict responses providing acceptable accuracy rather than the complicated laboratory investigation. At higher frequency, the flexural failure occurs a bit earlier gradually compared to the repeated loading case of lower frequency. The deflection increases by 6%-10% at the end of first cycle for beams with increasing frequency of cyclic loading. However, at the end of fatigue loading, greater deflection occur earlier for higher load range because of more rapid stiffness degradation. For higher frequency, a slight boost in concrete compressive strains at an initial stage of loading has been seen indicating somewhat stepper increment. Stiffness degradation in larger loading cycle at same duration escalates the upsurge of the rate of strain in case of higher frequency.
It has been known that one-dimensional rod theory is very effective as a simplified analytical approach to large scale or complicated structures such as high-rise buildings, in preliminary design stages. It replaces an original structure by a one-dimensional rod which has an equivalent stiffness in terms of global properties. If the structure is composed of distinct constituents of different stiffness such as coupled walls with opening, structural behavior is significantly governed by the local variation of stiffness. This paper proposes an extended version of the rod theory which accounts for the two-dimensional local variation of structural stiffness; viz, variation in the transverse direction as well as longitudinal stiffness distribution. The governing equation for the two-dimensional rod theory is formulated from Hamilton's principle by making use of a displacement function which satisfies continuity conditions across the boundary between the distinct structural components in the transverse direction. Validity of the proposed theory is confirmed by comparison with numerical results of computational tools in the cases of static, free vibration and forced vibration problems for various structures.
The ball bearings are the widely-used machine elements in many machineries. They support not only the radial and the axial force but also the moment in many cases. To simply determine the limit load which can be maintained on an ball bearing or survived in wanted life, the combined the radial and axial force with the moment is converted to the equivalent radial or axial load. However, it is not easy to calculate the equivalent load on the ball bearings. So the simplified equations to evaluate the dynamic and static equivalent load considering the axial force and moment are proposed in this analysis. And the modified equation for the static equivalent radial load with the moment and the axial load is proposed. It is desired that these equations are effectively refered in designing the machineries where the ball bearings are installed.
