Biocides Effect on the Microbiologically Influenced Corrosion of Pure Copper by Desulfovibrio sp.

  • The aims of this study were to determine the corrosion behavior of pure copper in the presence of Desulfovibrio sp. and also to investigate the effects of glutaraldehyde (GD) and isothiazolinone (ISO) on the corrosion behavior of pure copper in the presence of this sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) strain by using electrochemical techniques. Electrochemical measurements of pure copper were carried out at specified time intervals (0, 8, 24, 48, and 96 hr) over a period of exposure. Corrosion rates of pure copper from anodic and cathodic Tafel slopes and corrosion potential ($E_{corr}$) were determined. Biofilm and corrosion products on the copper surfaces were observed by Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy (FESEM) and Energy Dispersive X-Ray Spectrometry (EDS) analyses. The effects of solution types (PC (Postgate's C medium) and SRB (Desulfovibrio sp.)) and exposure times of copper and biocides (ISO or GD) on the corrosion rates of pure copper were evaluated by statistical analyses. As a result of the FESEM analysis, biofilm formation was observed on the surfaces of pure copper exposed to the Desulfovibrio sp. cultures both with and without the biocides. The results show that the pure copper was corroded by Desulfovibrio sp. However, the addition of GD or ISO to the Desulfovibrio sp. culture resulted in a decrease in the corrosion rate of the pure copper. It was also observed that both of the biocides showed a similar effect on pure copper's corrosion rate caused by Desulfovibrio sp.

Evaluation of GaN Transistors Having Two Different Gate-Lengths for Class-S PA Design

  • This paper presents a characteristic evaluation of commercial gallium nitride (GaN) transistors having two different gate-lengths of $0.4-{\mu}m$ and $0.25-{\mu}m$ in the design of a class-S power amplifier (PA). Class-S PA is operated by a random pulse-width input signal from band-pass delta-sigma modulation and has to deal with harmonics that consider quantization noise. Although a transistor having a short gate-length has an advantage of efficient operation at higher frequency for harmonics of the pulse signal, several problems can arise, such as the cost and export license of a $0.25-{\mu}m$ transistor. The possibility of using a $0.4-{\mu}m$ transistor on a class-S PA at 955 MHz is evaluated by comparing the frequency characteristics of GaN transistors having two different gate-lengths and extracting the intrinsic parameters as a shape of the simplified switch-based model. In addition, the effectiveness of the switch model is evaluated by currentmode class-D (CMCD) simulation. Finally, device characteristics are compared in terms of current-mode class-S PA. The analyses of the CMCD PA reveal that although the efficiency of $0.4-{\mu}m$ transistor decreases more as the operating frequency increases from 955 MHz to 3,500 MHz due to the efficiency limitation at the higher frequency region, it shows similar power and efficiency of 41.6 dBm and 49%, respectively, at 955 MHz when compared to the $0.25-{\mu}m$ transistor.

  • Zizania latifola has used for folk medicine in Korea. It is effective in treating skin trouble and sensitivity skins. The purpose of this study was to develop high valuable types of bath preparation of Zizania latifolia. The natural materials were manufactured by the mixed ratio of Zizania latifolia. Product was manufactured by the mixed ratio of Zizania latifolia and 3 natural materials. Green tea was highest in sensory evaluation as similar with Zizania latifolia. optimum condition of mixed ratio was adaptive 50% Houttuynia cordata, 30% green tea with 20% Artemisia vularis. Product's sensory evaluation was showed best in mixing 40% and Zizania latifolia extract 60%. There were optimal condition for manufacturing of cleansing. Therefore, The development of a bath preparation used by Zizania latifolia is very useful for manufacturing cleansing. We suggest that it help for improve skin trouble and make healthy skin.

New economical and simple device for intraoperative expansion on small and medium sized soft tissue defects

  • Intraoperative expansion has been used to cover small to large defects without disadvantages of the conventional tissue expanders. Various materials, for example, expanders and Foley catheters are being used. We introduce a new, convenient and economical device immediately available in the operating room, according to the defect size for intraoperative expansion, with latex gloves or balloons. The retrospective study was done with 20 patients who presented with skin and soft tissue defects. During the operation, expansion was done with latex gloves or balloons inflated with saline through an intravenous line and a three-way stopcock. After the inflation, the glove was removed and skin was covered with expanded tissue. A careful decision was made regarding the inflation volume and placement of the expander according to the defect size. There were no postoperative complications. The skin contracture and tension was minimal with a texture similar to the adjacent tissue. The new intraoperative expansion devices with latex gloves and balloons were cheap and made easily right in the operation room. The reconstruction of small to large sized skin defects can be done successfully, functionally and aesthetically without using expensive commercial materials.

Reliability Characteristics of a Package-on-Package with Temperature/Humidity Test, Temperature Cycling Test, and High Temperature Storage Test (온도/습도 시험, 온도 싸이클링 시험 및 고온유지 시험에 따른 Package-on-Package의 신뢰성)

  • Reliability characteristics of thin package-on-packages were evaluated using T/H (temperature/humidity) test at $85^{\circ}C/85%$ for 500 hours, TC (temperature cycling) test at $-40{\sim}100^{\circ}C$ for 1,000 cycles, and HTS (high temperature storage) test at $155^{\circ}C$ for 1,000 hours. The average resistance of the solder-bump circuitry between the top and bottom packages of 24 package-on-package (PoP) samples, which were processed using polyimide thermal tape, was $0.56{\pm}0.05{\Omega}$ and quite similar for all 24 samples. Open failure of solder joints did not occur after T/H test for 500 hours, TC test for 1,000 cycles, and HTS test for 1,000 hours, respectively.

  • To examine the general features of a sand-clay composite triaxial test by making specimen varying ratios of diameters (dw) of sand columns that are installed on the soft ground as drains to diameters (de) of drain zone so called drainage space ratio (n=de/dw), densities of the granular columns, and strength of soft soils round around. I also conducted a test to research the reinforcement ability and effects of the ground when the granular columns are wrapped with supplementary materials such as geotextile. The results of the triaxial compression test showed that the shear strength increase is much big when the granular columns are wrapped with supplementary materials, while the shear strength increases as the diameter and density of the granular column increase in general. Also the drainage space ratio shows a distinct increase just below 3 and a similar shear behavior to sand is appeared. The pore water pressure coefficient decreases as the drainage space ratio decreases, however, when the drainage space ratio is less than 3~4, it declines significantly as shown in the results of shear behavior.

Effect of Alloying on the Microstructure and Fatigue Behavior of Fe-Ni-Cu-Mo P/M Steels

  • The effect of alloying mode and porosity on the axial tension-tension fatigue behavior of a P/M steel of nominal composition Fe-4w/o Ni-1.5w/o Cu-O.5w/o Mo-O.5w/o C has been evaluated. Alloying modes utilized were elemental powder mixing, partial alloying(distaloy) and prealloying by water atomization; in each case the carbon was introduced as graphite prior to sintering. Powder compacts were sintered($1120{\circ}C$/30 min.) in 7Sv/o $H_2$/25v/o $N_2$ to densities in the range 6.77-7.2 g/$cm^3$. The dependence of fatigue limit response on alloying mode and porosity was interpreted in terms of the constituent phases and the pore and fracture morphologies associated with the three alloying modes. For the same nominal composition, the three alloying modes resulted in different sintered microstructures. In the elemental mix alloy and the distaloy, the major constituent was coarse and fine pearlite, with regions of Ni-rich ferrite, Ni-rich martensite and Ni-rich areas. In contrast, the prealloy consisted primarily of martensite by with some Ni-rich areas. From an examination of the fracture surfaces following fatigue testing it was concluded that essentially all of the fracture surfaces exhibited dimpled rupture, characteristic of tensile overload. Thus, the extent of growth of any fatigue cracks prior to overload was small. The stress amplitude for the three alloying modes at 2x$l0^6$ was used for the comparison of fatigue strengths. For load cycles <3x$l0^5$, the prealloy exhibited optimum fatigue response followed by the distaloy and elemental mix alloy, respectively. At load cycles >2x$l0^6$, similar fatigue limits were exhibited by the three alloys. It was concluded that fatigue cracks propagate primarily through pores, rather than through the constituent phases of the microstructure. A decrease in pore SIze improved the S-N behavior of the sintered steel.

Study on the Applicability of the Air Cushion Material for Impact Relief through Thermal Bonding of High Strength Fabrics (고강력 직물의 열융착 라미네이팅을 통한 충격 완화용 에어쿠션 소재로의 적용 가능성 검토 연구)

  • In order to study wearable air cushion materials capable of responding to massive impact in high-altitude fall situation, high tenacity woven fabrics were bonded by heat only depending on various type of thermoplastic films and then mechanical properties were measured. Tensile strength, elongation, and 100% modulus measurement results for 4 types of films show that TPU-2 has higher impact resistance and easier expansion than PET-1. After thermal bonding, the combination with the highest tensile strength was a material with a TPU-2 film for nylon and a PET-2 film for PET, so there was a difference by type of fabric. The tear strength of the bonded materials were increased compared to the fabric alone, which shows that durability against damage such as tearing can be obtained through film adhesion. All of the peel strengths exceeded the values required by automobile airbags by about 5 times, and the TPU-2 bonded fabric showed the highest value. The air permeability was 0 L/dm2 /min. For both the film and the bonded material, which means tightness between the fabric and the film through thermal bonding. It is expected to be applied as a wearable air cushion material by achieving a level of mechanical properties similar to or superior to that of automobile airbags through the method of bonding film and fabric by thermal bonding.

A Study on the Mechanical Compaction of Pervious Materials (투수성 성토재료의 기계다짐에 관한 연구)

  • The Compaction of fill dam is very important for increasing of the safty of dam. Vibration roller is used for the compaction of pervious materials such as sand and gravel. The principal objects of this study are to give a comstruction criteria of vibration roller and to find out the relationship between dry density and permeabity of pervious soil after compaction. The results in this study are summerized as follows. 1.The relationship between maximum dry density (Υdmax) and optimum moisture content(Wo) of modified compaction test is Υdmax=2. 74-0. 064w0 2.The maximum dry density decrease with increasing fine particle(n) and the relative formular is n==ae-brdmax 3.The maximum dry density is influenced more by passing rate of number 200 sieve than 4 sieve. 4.The coefficient of permeability are similar when the degrees of compaction are equal even though the spreading thickness of soil are different. 5.The coefficient of permeability(K)is greatly influence by fine particle passing number 200 sieve, and those relationship is inversely proportionate. 6.The K values of pervious soil are from 10-0 cm/sec to 10-4 cm/sec when degree of compaction by a modified method is from 90 to 95percent. 7.The coarser material is little influenced on the permeability with different density. 8.The increasing rate of permeability with decreasing degree of compaction is more influened by fine pacticle than number 200 sieve. When degree of compaction decrease from 100 percent to 90 percent the K values of SM and GM increase about 20 times but GW increase 6 times only. 9.The effect of compaction by vibration roller is greatly influenced by 6 passes and the increasing rate of the effect is decraased at 8 passes. 10. In order to get the degree of compaction of 95 percent or more, 6 to 8 passes of roller are generall required with 30 cm thickeness of soil for 4.5 ton to 6.5 ton vibration roller and 7 to 8 passes is required with 50cm thickness for 8 to 12 ton roller.

Deposition and Corrosion Resistance of Electrophoretic Paint Coated on AZ61 and TZ61 Magnesium Alloys

  • Electrophoretic paint (E-paint) was investigated on four different magnesium substrates: as-extruded AZ61 (AZ61), heat-treated AZ61 (AZ61-H), as-extruded TZ61 (TZ61) and heat-treated TZ61 (TZ61-H), to elucidate the effect of heat treatment and alloying elements on the deposition and corrosion resistance of E-paint. It was found that, a rapid increase of voltage, indicating that the deposition of E-paint had started, was observed after an induction time of 0.39 min for AZ61-H, 0.43 min for AZ61, 0.51 min for TZ61-H and 0.58 min for TZ61. The amount of E-paint deposited on the four samples was approximately similar, but the electrical charge used for the deposition process on the heat-treated samples was smaller than that on the as-extruded samples. The current efficiencies of E-paint on AZ samples (AZ61 and AZ61-H) were higher than those of TZ samples (TZ61 and TZ61-H), and on the heat-treated samples were higher than on as-extruded samples. All E-paintings on the four magnesium substrates had an excellent adhesion without any paint detached by tape peel-test. However, many large blisters were formed on the surface of AZ samples, and none, or very small blisters were observed on TZ samples after immersion test in DI-water for 500 h at $40^{\circ}C$. Under salt spray test (SST) conditions, E-paint on AZ samples showed blistering adjacent to scribes, while blistering of E-paint occurred on intact areas of TZ samples. The E-paint on heat-treated samples showed much better corrosion resistance than that on as-extruded samples. The ranking of greater to lesser corrosion resistance of the E-paint on these four different magnesium substrates is indicated by the order: AZ61-H > AZ61 > TZ61-H > TZ61.
