  • Despite of increasing digital materials, it is still important to collect print materials and keep their storage space for national level self supporting system as a science and technology(ST) material import country. In order to deal with the storage space issue, we conducted a ST material storage space and its expanding plan for Korea Institute of Science and Technology Information(KISTI). This paper examined first the domestic and overseas standard for the library stack space, analyzed current KISTI library stack space, and finally forecasted its demand in 2020 based on the increasing rate of the stack space. The expanding plans are suggested at the individual library level and also at the cooperative library storage facilities. The results of this paper will help that other libraries diagnose the present status and forecast the future library stack space when they face with the similar problems as it is examined in the KISTI case.

  • Objectives: This study was performed to evaluate the cytotoxicity of four calcium silicate-based endodontic cements at different storage times after mixing. Materials and Methods: Capillary tubes were filled with Biodentine (Septodont), Calcium Enriched Mixture (CEM cement, BioniqueDent), Tech Biosealer Endo (Tech Biosealer) and ProRoot MTA (Dentsply Tulsa Dental). Empty tubes and tubes containing Dycal were used as negative and positive control groups respectively. Filled capillary tubes were kept in 0.2 mL microtubes and incubated at $37^{\circ}C$. Each material was divided into 3 groups for testing at intervals of 24 hr, 7 day and 28 day after mixing. Human monocytes were isolated from peripheral blood mononuclear cells and cocultered with 24 hr, 7 day and 28 day samples of different materials for 24 and 48 hr. Cell viability was evaluated using an MTT assay. Results: In all groups, the viability of monocytes significantly improved with increasing storage time regardless of the incubation time (p < 0.001). After 24 hr of incubation, there was no significant difference between the materials regarding monocyte viability. However, at 48 hr of incubation, ProRoot MTA and Biodentine were less cytotoxic than CEM cement and Biosealer (p < 0.01). Conclusions: Biodentine and ProRoot MTA had similar biocompatibility. Mixing ProRoot MTA with PBS in place of distilled water had no effect on its biocompatibility. Biosealer and CEM cement after 48 hr of incubation were significantly more cytotoxic to on monocyte cells compared to ProRoot MTA and Biodentine.

  • Guar gum, ${\kappa}$-carrageenan, alginic acid and chitosan were applied to pork as a model system, and evaluated as a substitute for inorganic polyphosphate, which is one of the essential additives in conventional meat processing. The tested materials did not alter the fat content or pH of the pork meat; however, they did affect water holding capacity and cooking loss significantly. The pork with added guar gum and ${\kappa}$-carrageenan exhibited lower cooking loss than the pork with added polyphosphate. Also, theses materials showed no negative coloring effect within the pork meat blends, which suggest the possibility for their application in final products. In addition, the pork processed with guar gum showed a similar emulsion stability to that with polyphosphate. Overall, guar gum and ${\kappa}$-carrageenan were confirmed as possible substitutes for inorganic polyphosphate.

  • In the present study, we successfully developed an eco-friendly chemical etching solution and proper condition for plating on ABS material. The mechanism of forming Ni plating layer on ABS substrate is known as following. In general, the etching solution used for the etching process is a solution of chromic acid and sulfuric acid. The etching solution is given to the surface resulting in elution of butadiene group, so-called anchor effect. Such a rough surface can easily adsorb catalyst resulting in the increase of adhesion between ABS substrate and Ni plating layer. However a use of chromic acid is harmful to environment. It is, therefore, essential to develop a new alternative solution. In the present study, we proposed an eco-friendly etching solution composed of potassium permanganate, sulfuric acid and phosphoric acid. This solution was testified to observe the surface microstructure and the pore size of electrical Ni plating layer, and the adhesive correlation between deposited layers fabricated by electro Ni plating was confirmed. The result of the present study, the newly developed, eco-friendly etching solution, which is a mixture of potassium permanganate 25 g/L, sulfuric acid 650ml/L and phosphoric acid 250ml/L, has a similar etching effect and adhesion property, compared with the commercially used chromium acid solution in the condition at $70^{\circ}C$ for 5 min.

  • Soils containing vanishing materials lead changes in the microstructure of particulate media due to water inflow. Thus, dissolution renders some local unstability. As the moisture contents decease, the component of the vanished materials may affects on the cementation of paniculate materials. This cementation phenomenon has a huge influence on the stiffness, strength and stability under lower stress level. The goal of this study is to introduce the cementation effects on a compressional wave velocity, a shear wave velocity, and the resonant frequency of shear waves. The glass bead and salt water with different mole contents are used. Test results show that the changes of shear and compressional wave velocities consist of three stages. In the first region, compressional wave velocities increase and shear wave velocities decrease with a decreases in reducing water contents from 100% to 90~95%. In the second region, shear and compressional wave velocities become stable at 90~95% to 10% of the water contents. In the third region, shear and compressional wave velocities increases dramatically with a decrease in the water content due to the capillary force and cementation of salt. Furthermore, the resonant frequency of the shear waves shows similar phenomenon. Specimens prepared by glass beads and salt water are proved to be able to provide a meaningful insight in under structural behaviors of the cementation.

  • Permeable block pavement systems are widely used to relieve the flood and enhance water circulation. However, domestic design method has not yet been established well. Although AASHTO 93 flexible pavement design method is applied as a structural design method outside the country, there is a lack of information on layer coefficient of the permeable pavement materials, which makes it difficult to apply the design to various materials. Therefore, in this study, a method of calculating the layer coefficient of permeable block pavement materials by plate load test was presented and the layer coefficient of a permeable block pavement in a testbed was evaluated. Overall, calculated layer coefficient of open graded aggregate and permeable block pavement surface layer were similar to those of the conventional values. The presented method may be used to evaluate layer coefficients of permeable block pavements for design.

  • In-situ capping is a method to stabilize contaminated sediments by isolation. Few researches on the in-situ capping have been performed, although the engineering approach is still required to prevent the release of contaminants. In this study, hydraulic model test were conducted by using a wave generator to observe the change of cap thickness which is important factor in design of capping. Sands with particle size between 0.075 to 2 mm as capping materials were used to observe the change of capping thickness by waves. The experimental results show that the surface of capping materials is similar to wave form. The more wave height increases, the more erosion of capping materials increases.

  • A biliant stent was fabricated using a magnesium alloy wire, a biodegradable metal. In order to control the fast decomposition and corrosion of magnesium alloys in vivo, magnesium alloy wires were coated with biodegradable polymers such as polycaprolactone (PCL), poly(propylene carbonate) (PPC), poly (L-lactic acid) (PLLA), and poly (D, L-lactide-co-glycolide) (PLGA). In the case of PPC, which is a surface erosion polymer, there is no crack or peeling compared to other polymers (PCL, PLLA, and PLGA) that exhibit bulk erosion behavior. Also, the effect of biodegradable polymer coating on the axial force, which is the mechanical property of magnesium alloy stents, was investigated. Stents coated with most biodegradable polymers (PCL, PLLA, PLGA) increased axial forces compared to the uncoated stent, reducing the flexibility of the stent. However, the stent coated with PPC showed the axial force similar to uncoated stent, which did not reduce the flexibility. From the above results, PPC is considered to be the most efficient biodegradable polymer.

  • Electrical conductivities of complex perovskites, layered perovskite and Sr doped layered perovskite oxides were measured and analyzed for cathode materials of Intermediate Temperature-operating Solid Oxide Fuel Cells (IT-SOFCs). The electrical conductivities of $Sm_{1-x}Sr_xCoO_{3-\delta}$ (x = 0.3 and 0.7) exhibit a metal-insulator transition (MIT) behavior as a function of temperature. However, $Sm_{0.5}Sr_{0.5}CoO_{3-\delta}$ (SSC55) shows metallic conductivity characteristics and the maximum electrical conductivity value compared to the values of $Pr_{0.5}Sr_{0.5}CoO_{3-\delta}$ (PSC55) and $Nd_{0.5}Sr_{0.5}CoO_{3-\delta}$ (NSC55). The electrical conductivity of $SmBaCo_2O_{5+\delta}$ (SBCO) exhibits a MIT at about $250^{\circ}C$. The maximum conductivity is 570 S/cm at $200^{\circ}C$ and its value is higher than 170 S/cm over the whole temperature range tested. $SmBa_{0.5}Sr_{0.5}Co_2O_{5+\delta}$ (SBSCO), 0.5 mol% Sr and Ba substituted at the layered perovskite shows a typically metallic conductivity that is very similar to the behavior of the SSC55 cathode, and the maximum and minimum electrical conductivity in the SBSCO are 1280 S/cm at $50^{\circ}C$ and 280 S/cm at $900^{\circ}C$.

  • Because of internal voids in insulators give rise to partial discharge (PD), which cause local breakdown and even entire insulation breakdown. Treeing due to PD is one of the main causes of breakdown of the insulating materials and reduction of the insulation life. Therefore the necessity for establishing a method to diagnose the aging of insulation materials and to predict the breakdown of insulation has become important. From this viewpoint, our studies diagnose insulation degradation using the method of computer sensing system, which has the advantages of PD and acoustic emission (AE) sensing system. To use advantages of these two methods can be used effectively to search for treeing location and PD in some materials. In analysis method of degradation, We analyzed the PD pulse and AE pulses by regression analysis, compared to these obtained the correlation coefficient and determination coefficient by T-distribution and saw that PD and AE pulses show a similar pattern on the whole. This is in agreement with the results of the research by Yoshimura and Fujita.
