Development of the Wheel Disc Spinning Machine (휠 디스크 스피닝 성형기 개발)

  • The spinning machine has been developed for a bus and truck wheel disc which is manufactured by spinning process method. This machine has the mechanical structure with bed, 2-column, cross head, 2-vertical slide, 2-horizontal slide with forming roller, clamp slide and main spindle similar to large size vertical lathe. Main spindle attached the mandrel is rotated about 500rpm drived by 280kW power DC motor, and a rotating black material pressed on the mandrel with the clamp slide is spinformed by 2-forming rollers which are attached inner end of the 2-horizontal slides. The 2-vertical and 2-horizontal slides are actuated by the hydraulic cylinder which is controlled by the servo valve individially, and these servo valves are controlled by control signal of the CNC controller which is computed with position signal feedbacked from the encoder sensor. The developed machine can manufacture wheel disc of various section profile without mandrel change because section profile is easily modified using program editing in the CNC controller processor. The wheel disc manufactured by spinning process method has many advantages that the endurance is increased by 2 times and the weight is decreased by 30% compared with a conventional disc.

Soda and Soda-AQ Pulps Properties from African Tulip Tree (아프리카 튤립으로 제조한 soda 및 soda-AQ 펄프의 특성)

  • To use the African tulip tree (Spathodea campanulata) as raw material for chemical pulping, soda and soda-AQ pulping was investigated. In chemical compositional analysis, lignin contents of African tulip (33.1%) was higher than other hardwood such as Yellow poplar (17.5%), Acacia (27.1%), or Eucalyptus (24.2%). Soda or soda-AQ pulping with African tulip tree resulted in yield at 43.4-44.8% with 29.5-34.5 Kappa number, pulping condition with 20-22% active alkali. Kappa number of African tulip tree pulp was quite higher than other tropical hardwood (Eucalyptus or Accacia) with less yield due to higher lignin content in wood. Fiber length and width of pulp from African tulip tree was similar to Accacia pulp and shorter than eucalyptus pulp.

  • Materials used for the inks in the printing industry is an important material following the paper. The composition of the ink is pigment and organic solvents. However, Ink is used in a variety of chemicals, they are classified as non-green. Therefore, rosin-modified phenolics manufactured by the reaction of phenol and formaldehyde can take the place of eco-phenol free resin and by experiment density, gloss, trapping, contrast and dot gain of printing has been studied as printability. The result of study can support that the properties of printing using eco-phenol free resin such as density, gloss, contrast and trapping is similar to existing ink. In the part of dot gain, the result is excellent. So we were thought to be able to improve some characteristics such as dispersion of black ink, that will be possible for the field applicability.

Cardiac Surgery Via Lower Partial Sternotomy Lower Partial Sternotomy (부분 하흉골절개술을 이용한 심장수술)

  • Background: Recent trends suggest that minimally invasive cardiac surgery reduces postoperative morbidity and offers a cosmetic benefit. This study was performed to evaluate the CPB time, ACC time, OP time, ICU stay and postoperative hospital stay following a lower partial sternotomy and those of the median sternotomy. Material and Method: A group of 26 adult patients who underwent cardiac surgery through lower partial sternotomy from August 1997 to July 1999(A group) were compared to 45 adult patients who underwent cardiac surgery through median sternotomy from January 1996 to July 1997(B group). The mean ages(46.4$\pm$14.6 years, A group and 46.8$\pm$13.2 years, B group) were similar. Operations were performed with central cannula and antegrade/retrograde blood cardioplegia. Result: There was no death in each group. No differences were found in CPB time, ACC time, OP time, ICU stay and postoperative hospital stay. Postoperative complications were sternal splitting in a patient in group A and a patient with bleeding that required reoperation and a patient with delayed wound closure in group B. Conclusion: The lower partial sternotomy offered a cosmetic benefit, but does not significantly reduced the length of operative time and hospital stay. Minimally invasive cardiac surgery will be applied increasing because of the suggested advantage and choosing a proper operative technique will be helpful.

Validation of FDS for Pool Fire in Three Rooms Connected to Ventilation Network (환기가 제한된 세 개 격실에서 Pool Fire에 대한 FDS 검증분석)

  • This study aims to validate predictive capabilities of FDS for the pool fire in three rooms connected to ventilation network. The three rooms in real scale fire test facility are configured to be similar to that of nuclear power plant in size, ventilation condition, construction material, etc. Basically three rooms are confined to the other area except two open doors and two ventilation duct in each room. The real scale fire test was conducted with these conditions and the predictive capabilities of FDS will be validated by comparing FDS simulation results with experimental data from the temperature, heat flux, and concentration point of view. This study concludes that temperature from FDS is about 25 % lower deviation from the experiment, and heat flux from FDS is about 5% deviation.

The Study of the Compatibility of MSDS for the Classification of Flammable Materials (위험물의 분류를 위한 MSDS 이용의 적정성 연구)

  • The usage of MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheet) is increased world widely for the implementation of GHS and REACH. In order to know the accuracy of the data in MSDS the flash point of n-Decanol was measured by using a Tag closed tester, a Seta-flash closed tester, a Pensky-Martens closed tester and a Cleveland open tester in Japan and Korea, respectively. The test results of flash points of n-Decanol purchased different manufacturer were compared to the data of the references and MSDS. The flash points determined in Japan were similar to those in Korea but have shown much difference from those in MSDS and literatures. It is suggested that the results of flash points determined in this research have validity and manufacturers should be more careful when they make MSDS as well as for the classification of GHS and REACH.

Toward the computational rheometry of filled polymeric fluids

  • We present a short review for authors' previous work on direct numerical simulations for inertialess hard particle suspensions formulated either with a Newtonian fluid or with viscoelastic polymeric fluids to understand the microstructural evolution and the bulk material behavior. We employ two well-defined bi-periodic domain concepts such that a single cell problem with a small number of particles may represent a large number of repeated structures: one is the sliding bi-periodic frame for simple shear flow and the other is the extensional bi-periodic frame for planar elongational flow. For implicit treatment of hydrodynamic interaction between particle and fluid, we use the finite-element/fictitious-domain method similar to the distributed Lagrangian multiplier (DLM) method together with the rigid ring description. The bi-periodic boundary conditions can be effectively incorportated as constraint equations and implemented by Lagrangian multipliers. The bulk stress can be evaluated by simple boundary integrals of stresslets on the particle boundary in such formulations. Some 2-D example results are presented to show effects of the solid fraction and the particle configuration on the shear and elongational viscosity along with the micro-structural evolution for both particles and fluid. Effects of the fluid elasticity has been also presented.

A study on the determination of shear strength and the support design of pre-failed rock slope (일차파괴된 암반사면의 전단강도 및 보강설계법 고찰)

  • Shear strength of the discontinuity on which the pre-failure of rock slope was occurred during surface excavation was measured through the direct shear test using core samples obtained in-situ. Internal friction angle was increased as the roughness of discontinuity surface(JRC) was increased. Results of the tilt test using core samples of higher JRC also showed very similar trend as those of the direct shear test. When the samples replicated from natural cores were used int he tilt test, results of friction angles showed almost perfect continuation of the residual friction angles from the direct shear test. However, when the gouge material existed in the discontinuity the internal friction angle strongly depended upon the rate of filling thickness to the height of asperity irrespective of the JRC. Based on the results of both direct shear test and tilt test internal friction angle and cohesion of discontinuity, which reflect the in-situ conditions fo pre-sliding failure and also can be used for the optimum design of support system, were assessed. Two kinds of support measures which were expected to increase the stability of rock slope were considered; lowering of slope face angle and installation of rock cable. But, it was found that the first method might lead to more unstable conditions of rock slope when the cohesion of discontinuity plane was negligibly low and in that case the support systems of any kind which could exert actual resisting force were needed to ensure the permanent stability of rock slope.

Wastewater Treatment Process Study for Used Diaper Recycling (사용 후 기저귀 재활용을 위한 폐수처리방안 연구)

  • This study aims to suggest wastewater treatment options for diaper recycling by identifying characteristic analysis of wastewater from diaper recycling process and efficiency evaluation of wastewater treatment units. The wastewater characteristic analysis showed that the concentration of organic pollutants and ionic materials were very high comparing to seawater. Through the investigation of similar wastewater treatment, six treatment units were identified to reduce pollutants. It is found UF(ultra-filtration), DAF(dissolved air flotation), fenton oxidation, electro-coagulation and chemical-coagulation are effective in reducing organic pollutants while membrane system and ion exchanger are effective in reducing ionic materials. Even though the target of water quality should be secured in terms of managing organic pollutants level, the application of treatment unit for reducing ionic material needs lots of considerations. This result suggests that reuse of pulping wastewater after controlling organic pollutants is better than direct discharge of pulping wastewater. To select the appropriate wastewater treatment unit, an economic analysis about operation condition, wastewater flow, cost, efficiency should be considered.

Manufacture of the Fluidizing Media Using Rice Straw and Paper Wastewater Treatment (볏짚을 이용한 유동장 여재제조 및 제지폐수처리)

  • Biological treatment using the activated sludge method and biofilm process has been developed for paper wastewater treatment. It is known that a water treatment using biofilm process has a high efficiency be-cause a great deal of microorganism could adhere to media. It is also known that various plastics such as polyurethane and polyethylene have been used as the media. In this study polyethylene was used as a media and rice straw an additive agent to improve porous and hydrophilic properties of the media for waste water treatment. Porosity and hydrophilic characteristics of polyethylene was increased as rice straw was added to polyethylene. Paper wastewater was then treated with newly developed environment materials. Rice straw showed excellent results in waste water treatment in various media. This environmentally friendly material prepared by polyethylene and rice straw could show similar results to those of a commercial porous polyurethane foam in wastewater treatment.
