  • This research delves into the fabrication of an ultra-high-strength concrete, enriched with oxidized graphene nanoplatelet(GO) and hollow glass powder(HGP), notably eschewing the conventional inclusion of silica fume(SF). The primary objective was to scrutinize the autogenous shrinkage characteristics of this innovative formulation. It was discerned that the NewMix specimen, which incorporated the cGO(sourced from Company C) and HGP, and intentionally bypassed SF, showcased a commendable 13% reduction in autogenous shrinkage relative to the benchmark(Ref) specimenthat incorporated SF. Moreover, the proclivity for crack formation owing to autogenous shrinkage in the NewMix was observed to manifested by NewMix at the juncture of cracking emerged as the apex value. Attributed to the expansive specific surface area and exemplary dispersibility of cGO, it was postulated that the concrete's pore structure benefitted from enhanced infill, leading to a reduction in autogenous shrinkage. Additionally, the cGO integration fortified the concrete's resistance to crack initiation. Consequently, such an enhancement is posied to be pivotal in mitigating crack propagation resulting from autogenous shrinkage in ultra-high-strength concrete.

  • The inhibitors against Vibrio harveyi quorum sensing (QS) signaling were developed by modifying the molecular structure of the major signal, N-3-hydroxybutanoyl-L-homoserine lactone (3-OH-$C_4$-HSL). A series of structural derivatives, N-(3-hydroxysulfonyl)-L-homoserine lactones (HSHLs) were synthesized by the solid-phase organic synthesis method. The in vivo QS inhibition by these compounds was measured by a bioassay system using the V. harveyi bioluminescence, and all showed significant inhibitory effects. To analyze the interaction between these compounds and LuxN, a 3-OH-$C_4$-HSL receptor protein of V. harveyi, we tentatively determined the putative signal binding domain of LuxN based on the sequence homology with other acyl-HSL binding proteins, and predicted the partial 3-D structure of the putative signal binding domain of LuxN by using ORCHESTRA program, and further estimated the binding poses and energies (docking scores) of 3-OH-$C_4$-HSL and HSHLs within the domain. In comparison of the result from this modeling study with that of in vivo bioassay, we suggest that the in silica interpretation of the interaction between ligands and their receptor proteins can be a valuable way to develop better competitive inhibitors, especially in the case that the structural information of the protein is limited.

  • In recent years, construction company makes inroads into the world construction market, and receives the order of extra-large concrete structure under marine environment in south-east asia specially. At this point of time, to enhance the quality of concrete, we research the High Strength Concrete (HSC) containing mineral admixtures. In this study, therefore, HSC with various combination of ordinary portland cement(OPC), blast-furnace slag(SG), silica fume(SF), and expansion admixture(SS) are cured 23 and $35^{\circ}C$ considering the site weather, and are cured in water for 3, 7 or 56 days respectively. Test results show that the HSC cured at $35^{\circ}C$ gains higher early-age strength but eventually gains lower later-age strength compare with the HSC cured at $23^{\circ}C$. Especially, HSC with combination of OPC+SG+SF+SS or OPC+SG+SF show very excellent resistance of chloride penetration. The permeability of HSC was therefore enhanced as because of containing the proper content of SG, SF, and SS and making dense micro-structure of HSC.

  • As the foods and household manufacturing technology is developed, the packaging method of products is being changed from single to multi materials and layers. This study were focused on EPR carton packaging, economic and environmental expected effects were predicted by the improvements of packaging materials and structures to reduce effective packaging waste. Especially expected effects were predicted when improving the structure and material of aluminum laminated material was difficult to recycle. Thus, it was assumed the aseptic carton packaging laminated aluminum were replaced with silica laminated films. In conclusion, analysis of economic expected effects were undervalued in this study because of the limitation of assumptions, though this study has significance about a new approach by calculating the data different from the past that the conventional methods like predictive value of government's guidelines or goals.

  • Significant damage to concrete results from the intrusion of corrosive solutions, for example, dissolved chlorides corrode reinforcing steel and cause spatting. Effectively blocks the penetration of these solutions will eliminate or greatly reduce this damage and lead to increased durability. This study is to investigate the effects of pozzolanic admixtures, fly ash and silica fume, and a blast furnace slag on the chloride ion penetration of concretes. The main experimental variables wore the water-cementitious material ratios, the types and amount of admixtures, and the curing time. And it is tested for the porosity and pore size distributions of cement paste, chloride ion permeability based on electrical conductance, and 180-day ponding test for chloride intrusion. The results show that the resistance of concrete to the penetration of chloride ions increases as the w/c was decreased, and the increasing of curing time. Also, concrete with pozzolans exhibited higher resistance to chloride ion penetration than the plain concrete. The significant reduction in chloride ion permeability(charge passed) of concrete with pozzolans due to formation of a discontinuous macro-pore system which inhibits flow. It is shown that there is a relationship between chloride ion permeability and depth of chloride ion penetration of concrete, based on the pore structure (porosity and pore size distributions) of cement paste.

  • Zeolite was synthesized hydrothermally using the water-treatment sludge, and the effects of various synthesis parameters like reaction temperature, reaction time, and Na2O/SiO2 molar ratio on the crystallization of zeolite were investigated. Crystal structure, physical property, and thermal stability of zeolite crystals were characterized by X-ray powder diffraction, FTIR spectroscopy, BET nitrogen adsorption, and TGA measurements. The removal efficiencies of nitrogen in ammonia, heavy metal ions, and TOC were calculated to evaluate zeolite's adsorption capacity. The primary chemical composition of water-treatment sludge was 28.79% Al2O3 and 27.06% SiO2. The zeolites were synthesized by merely employing the water-treatment sludge as silica and alumina sources without additional chemicals. Zeolite crystals synthesized through the water-treatment sludge were confirmed as an A-type zeolite structure. Zeolite A had the highest crystallinity obtained from a gel with the molar composition 2.1Na2O-Al2O3-1.6SiO2-65H2O after 5 h at a temperature of 90 ℃. The specific surface area of zeolite obtained was 55 ㎡ g-1, which was higher than commercial zeolite A. The removal efficiency of nitrogen in ammonia was 68% after 3 h of reaction time, while the removal efficiencies of Pb2+ and Cd2+ ions were 99.1% and 99.3%, respectively. These results indicate active ion exchange between Pb2+ or Cd2+ ion and Na+ ion in the zeolite framework. The adsorption experiments on the different zeolite addition conditions were performed for 3 h with 300 ppm humic acid. Based on the results, TOC's highest efficiency was 83% when 5 g of zeolite was added.

  • The purpose of this study is liquefaction phenomenon was simulated using the 1g shaking table test. Analysis of liquefaction and Re-liquefaction behavior according to the ground conditions was analyzed when an embankment exists above the ground. The soil used in the experiment was silica sand and the ground composition was a liquefied layer of 50cm (Case 1), a non-liquefied layer of 17.5cm and a liquefied layer of 32.5cm (Case 2). The embankment was formed by fixing the height of 10cm and the slope of the slope at a ratio of 1:1.8. For seismic waves, excitation of a 5Hz sine wave was performed for 8 seconds, and a total of 5 case excitations were performed. In Case 1, it was confirmed that liquefaction occurred at all depths during the first vibration excitation at the free-field and that liquefaction did not occur at all depths except 5cm at the third vibration excitation. At the center of the embankment, liquefaction occurred up to a depth of 20cm during the first vibration excitation, and it was confirmed that liquefaction did not occur at all depths except for a depth of 5cm during the second vibration excitation.

  • An endophytic bacterial strain EB215 that was isolated from cucumber (Cucumis sativus) roots displayed a potent in vivo antifungal activity against Colletotrichum species. The strain was identified as Burkholderia cepacia based on its physiological and biochemical characteristics, and 16S rDNA gene sequence. Optimal medium and incubation period for the production of antifungal substances by B. cepacia EB215 were nutrient broth (NB) and 3 days, respectively. An antifungal substance was isolated from the NB cultures of B. cepacia EB215 strain by centrifugation, n-hexane partitioning, silica gel column chromatography, preparative TLC, and in vitro bioassay. Its chemical structure was determined to be pyrrolnitrin by mass and NMR spectral analyses. Pyrrolnitrin showed potent disease control efficacy of more than 90% against pepper anthracnose (Colletotrichum coccodes), cucumber anthracnose (Colletotrichum orbiculare), rice blast (Magnaporthe grisea) and rice sheath blight (Corticium sasaki) even at a low concentration of $11.1\;{\mu}g/ml$. In addition, it effectively controlled the development of tomato gray mold (Botrytis cinerea) and wheat leaf rust (Puccinia recondita) at concentrations over $33.3\;{\mu}g/ml$. However, it had no antifungal activity against Phytophthora infestans on tomato plants. Further studies on the development of microbial fungicide using B. cepacia EB215 are in progress.

  • Spherulitic rhyolite occur as part of ring dyke which showing a vertical flowage of $60^{\circ}{\sim}90^{\circ}$, of the Jangsan cauldron was studied. The spherulites range in diameter from a few millimeters to 2.8 centimeters or more, and average 5~10 millimeters. It belongs to radiated simple spherulite type. They consist of a core of moderate brown dense material encased by a thin crust, a few millimeters thick at most of white grey material. The spherulites frequently have a radiating fibrous structure, which are thought to have formed as a consequence of rapid mineral growth caused by very fast cooling of the dykes in shallow depth near the surface. EPMA examination of the concentric-zoned core of spherulites show that they are mainly composed of cryptocrystalline-fibrous intergrowth of silica minerals and alkali feldspars which have $SiO_2$ 82% or more, $Al_2O_3$ 7~10%, $Na_2O+K_2O$ less than 8%. The feldspar compositions of the spherulites lie essentially within the sanidine field. XRD examination show that spherulites are mainly composed of quartz, sanidine, albite with minor mica, kaolinite and chlorite. According to X-ray mapping, the spherulites are enriched in $SiO_2$ in the core and partly enriched $Na_2O$ or $K_2O$, $Al_2O_3$ in the shell that reflect in compositional zoning with increasing spherulitic devitrification. The feathery and non-equant crystal shapes of spherulites from rhyolite dyke of Jangsan cauldron suggest that they may have formed during the rapid cooling of dyke under the static state, or faster velocity of devitrification from glassy materials than movement velocity of the magma intrusion. The spherulitic rhyolite originated from high-silica(75.4~75.7 wt.%) rhyolite magma.

  • We explore the effect of particle shape and size on 3-dimensional (3D) network and pore structure of porous earth materials composed of glass beads and silica gel using NMR micro-imaging in order to gain better insights into relationship between structure and the corresponding hydrologic and seismological properties. The 3D micro-imaging data for the model porous networks show that the specific surface area, porosity, and permeability range from 2.5 to $9.6\;mm^2/mm^3$, from 0.21 to 0.38, and from 11.6 to 892.3 D (Darcy), respectively, which are typical values for unconsolidated sands. The relationships among specific surface area, porosity, and permeability of the porous media are relatively well explained with the Kozeny equation. Cube counting fractal dimension analysis shows that fractal dimension increases from ~2.5-2.6 to 3.0 with increasing specific surface area from 2.5 to $9.6\;mm^2/mm^3$, with the data also suggesting the effect of porosity. Specific surface area, porosity, permeability, and cube counting fractal dimension for the natural mongolian sandstone are $0.33\;mm^2/mm^3$, 0.017, 30.9 mD, and 1.59, respectively. The current results highlight that NMR micro-imaging, together with detailed statistical analyses can be useful to characterize 3D pore structures of various porous earth materials and be potentially effective in accounting for transport properties and seismic wave velocity and attenuation of diverse porous media in earth crust and interiors.
