  • The acoustic communication channel in shallow underwater is typically shown as time-varying multipath fading channel characteristics. The received signal through channel transmission cause inter-symbol interference (ISI) owing to multiple components of different time delay and amplitude. To compensate for this, several techniques have been used, and one of them is acoustic equalizer. In this study, we used four equalizers - feed forward equalizer (FFE), decision directed equalizer (DDE), decision feedback equalizer (DFE) and combination DDE with DFE to compensate ISI. And we applied two adaptive algorithms to adjust coefficient of equalizers - normalized least mean square algorithm and recursive least square algorithm. As result, we found that it has a significant performance improvement over 6 dB on SNR in nonlinear equalizer. By combination of DFE and DDE has almost best performance in any case.

  • The development of low-k materials is essential for modern semiconductor processes to reduce the cross-talk, signal delay and capacitance between multiple layers. The effect of the $CH_4$ concentration on the formation of SiOC(-H) films and their dielectric characteristics were investigated. SiOC(-H) thin films were deposited on Si(100)/$SiO_2$/Ti/Pt substrates by plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD) with $SiH_4$, $CO_2$ and $CH_4$ gas mixtures. After the deposition, the SiOC(-H) thin films were annealed in an Ar atmosphere using rapid thermal annealing (RTA) for 30min. The electrical properties of the SiOC(-H) films were then measured using an impedance analyzer. The dielectric constant decreased as the $CH_4$ concentration of low-k SiOC(-H) thin film increased. The decrease in the dielectric constant was explained in terms of the decrease of the ionic polarization due to the increase of the relative carbon content. The spectrum via Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy showed a variety of bonding configurations, including Si-O-Si, H-Si-O, Si-$(CH_3)_2$, Si-$CH_3$ and $CH_x$ in the absorbance mode over the range from 650 to $4000\;cm^{-1}$. The results showed that dielectric properties with different $CH_4$ concentrations are closely related to the (Si-$CH_3$)/[(Si-$CH_3$)+(Si-O)] ratio.

  • We developed an optical transmitter and receiver for an electrical time division multiplexed (ETDM) 20 Gb/s optical transmission system, and experimentally investigated their characteristics. Especially, the clock extraction circuit, which is a key component in realizing broadband optical transmission receivers, was realized by using an NRZ-to-PRZ converter implemented with a half-period delay line and an EX-OR, a high-Q bandpass filter using a cylindrical dielectric resonator, and a microstrip coupled-line bandpass filter. Finally, the bit-error-rate of demultiplexed 10 Gb/s electrical signal after back to-back transmission was measured, and a high receiver sensitivity [-26.2 dBm for NRZ ($2^{7}-1$) pseudorandom binary sequence (PRBS)] was obtained

  • MAC protocols in wireless ATM has to increase and maintain the system throughput performance. To achieve these purposes, this paper proposes a dynamic control algorithm called DSPA (Dynamic Signalling Period Allocation) for wireless ATM MAC protocol. The proposed DSPA algorithm consists of the following three algorithms. First, a control slot generation algorithm which generates the control slots by utilizing static and dynamic parameters from the terminals, is proposed. Second, a dynamic signalling period allocation algorithm is proposed for a base station to dynamically determine each signalling period according to current terminal states, and thus allocates the optimal signalling periods. Finally, a dynamic slot allocation algorithm is proposed to dynamically determine priorities of the terminals whenever a slot is allocated. Simulation results indicates that DSPA algorithm decreases average packet delay of the terminals by dynamic allocation of signal periods based on the system utilization, and thus increases the limitation of allowable loads that quarantee quality of services. Also the proposed algorithm is shown to maintain stable throughput even in the case of traffic variations.

  • Recently, underwater acoustic communication (UWAC) has been studied by many scholars and researchers. In order to use UWAC, we need to estimate time difference between the two signals in underwater environment. Typically, there are major three methods to estimate the time-difference between the two signals such as estimating the arrival time of the first non-background segment and calculate the temporal difference, calculating the cross-correlation between the two signal to infer the time-lagged, and estimating the phase delay to infer the time difference. In this paper, we present calculating the cross-correlation between the two signals to infer the time-lagged to apply UWAC. We also present the experimental result of estimating the arrival time by using cross-correlation. We get EXCORR = 0.003055 second as the estimation error in mean absolute difference.

  • Objective: Classically, single photon emission tomography is known to be the reference standard for evaluating the hemodynamic status of patients with moyamoya disease. Recently, T2-weighted perfusion magnetic resonance(MR) imaging has been found to be effective in estimating cerebral hemodynamics in moyamoya disease. We aim to assess the utility of perfusion-weighted MR imaging for evaluating hemodynamic status of moyamoya disease. Methods: The subjects were fourteen moyamoya patients(mean age: 7.21 yrs) who were admitted at our hospital between Sep. 2001 to Sep 2003. Four normal children were used for control group. Perfusion MR imaging was performed before any treatment by using a T2-weighted contrast material-enhanced technique. Relative cerebral blood volume(rCBV) and time to peak enhancement(TTP) maps were calculated. Relative ratios of rCBV and TTP in the anterior cerebral artery(ACA), middle cerebral artery(MCA) and basal ganglia were measured and compared with those of the posterior cerebral artery(PCA) in each cerebral hemispheres. Using this data, we analysed the hemodynamic aspect of pediatric moyamoya disease patients in regarding to the age, Suzuki stage, signal change in FLAIR MR imaging, and hemispheres inducing symptoms. Results: The mean rCBV ratio of ACA, MCA did not differ between normal children and moyamoya patients. However the significant TTP delay was observed at ACA, MCA territories (mean = 2.3071 sec, 1.2089 see, respectively, p < 0.0001). As the Suzuki stage of patients is advanced, rCBV ratio is decreased and TTP differences increased. Conclusion: Perfusion MR can be applied for evaluating preoperative cerebral hemodynamic status of moyamoya patients. Furthermore, perfusion MR imaging can be used for determine which hemisphere should be treated, first.

  • More and more people are suffering from sleep disturbance, which can have many different causes. The healthcare industry, which can help people with this disability, is one technology that is currently in the spotlight. However, current services are vulnerable to data concentration, because they are simple telemedicine services that transmit all data to a remote server and process the data on the server. They have a disadvantage in that the data cannot be streamed in real time by synchronizing the biometric data of remotely protected persons. In order to solve this problem, we propose a service structure for streaming biometric data of protected persons to a hospital or guardian in real time, using a self-organizing distributed middleware platform without a central server. We prove that it is possible to provide an effective streaming service by evaluating the service start time and average delay time.

  • The human glycoprotein, stanniocalcin 2 (STC2) plays multiple roles in several tumor types, however, its function and clinical significance in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) remain unclear. In this study, we detected STC2 expression by quantitative real-time PCR and found STC2 was upregulated in HCC tissues, correlated with tumor size and multiplicity of HCC. Ectopic expression of STC2 markedly promoted HCC cell proliferation and colony formation, while silencing of endogenous STC2 resulted in a reduced cell growth by cell cycle delay in G0/G1 phase. Western blot analysis demonstrated that STC2 could regulate the expression of cyclin D1 and activate extracellular signal-regulated kinase 1/2 (ERK1/2) in a dominant-positive manner. Transwell chamber assay also indicated altered patterns of STC2 expression had an important effect on cell migration. Our findings suggest that STC2 functions as a potential oncoprotein in the development and progression of HCC as well as a promising molecular target for HCC therapy.

  • To avoid undesirable disconnection of healthy wind generators (WGs) or a wind power plant, a WG protection relay should discriminate among faults, so that it can operate instantaneously for WG, connected feeder or connection bus faults, it can operate after a delay for inter-tie or grid faults, and it can avoid operating for parallel WG or adjacent feeder faults. A WG protection relay based on the positive- and negative-sequence fault components is proposed in the paper. At stage 1, the proposed relay uses the magnitude of the positive-sequence component in the fault current to distinguish faults requiring non-operation response from those requiring instantaneous or delayed operation responses. At stage 2, the fault type is first determined using the relationships between the positive- and negative-sequence fault components. Then, the relay differentiates between instantaneous operation and delayed operation based on the magnitude of the positive-sequence fault component. Various fault scenarios involving changes in position and type of fault and faulted phases are used to verify the performance of the relay. This paper concludes by implementing the relay on a hardware platform based on a digital signal processor. Results indicate that the relay can successfully distinguish the need for instantaneous, delayed, or non-operation.
