  • Effects of varieties and cutting lengths of Chinense Martrimony Vine on the growth characteristics and the yield of green shoot were investigated in order to obtain the basic data The Yuseong-2 was observed higher in the number of green shoot per plant, of green shoot, but smaller in the length and the width of leaves than those of Cheongyang native. The number of green shoot was decreased in longer cutting length, but the other growth characteristics were increased. The dry weight of green shoot was $1.01{\sim}0.03g$ and the ratio of stem to leaf in green shoot was higher in leaf than that of stem, and the ratio was 46 : 54. The dry yield of green shoot was $108{\sim}204kg/10a$ in Cheongyang native and $215{\sim}363kg/10a$ Yuseong-2 and the dry yield of green shoot of Yuseong-2 may be expected in this planting year. Each growth characteristic of varieties was highly positive correlation with the yield except the number of green shoot of Cheongyang native. The number of green shoot of Yuseong-2 was nagative correlation with each growth characteristic and the yield except the number of total leaves per plant.

  • Purple nonsulfur bacteria were isolated from river sediments and their growth promoting capabilities on tomato were examined. Isolated strains KL9 and BL6 were identified as Rhodopseudomonas spp. by 16S rDNA sequence analysis. Rhodopseudomonas strain KL9 maximally produced 5.56 mM/min/mg protein and $67.2\;{\mu}M/min/mg$ protein of indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) and 5-aminolevulinic acid (ALA), respectively, which may be one of the mechanisms of plant growth enhancement. The germination percentage of tomato seed, total length, and dry mass of germinated tomato seedling increased by 30.2%, 71.1%, and 270.8%, respectively, compared with those of the uninoculated control 7 days after inoculation of strain KL9. The lengths of the root and shoot of germinated seedling treated with 3 mM tryptophan, a precursor of IAA, increased by 104.4% and 156.5%, respectively, 7 days after inoculation of strain KL9. Rhodopseudomonas KL9 increased 123.5% and 54% of the root and shoot lengths of germinated seedling, respectively, treated with 15 mM glycine and succinate, precursors of ALA. This plant growth promoting capability of purple nonsulfur bacteria may be a candidate for a biofertilizer in agriculture.

  • We investigated the growth response and population regeneration of four halophyte species: Suaeda japonica, Salicornia europaea, Suaeda maritima and Suaeda glauca, when climate change proceeds caused by increased CO2 concentration and temperature. The plants collected from habitat in 2018 were transplanted into Wagner pots, and cultivated for two years in greenhouse divided into a control (ambient condition) and a treatment (elevated CO2+elevated temperature). The shoot length of halophytes was measured in July of each year, and the population regeneration rate was measured in October 2019. The shoot lengths of S. japonica and S. glauca had no difference between control and treatment for two years. Those of S. europaea were longer in control than treatment for two years. Those of S. maritima had no difference between control and treatment in 2018 but were longer in control than treatment in 2019. In control, the shoot lengths of S. japonica, S. europaea and S. glauca had no difference between years while those of S. maritima were longer in 2018 than in 2019. In treatment, those of S. japonica, S. europaea and S. maritima were shorter in 2019 than 2018 but S. glauca had no difference between years. The regeneration rates of S. japonica, S. europaea and S. glauca were lower treatment than control, and there was no difference in the regeneration rate of S. maritima. In conclusion, if climate change progresses caused by the increase of CO2 concentration and temperature, the shoot lengths of S. japonica, S. europaea and S. maritima will be shortened, and the regeneration rate of population will be increased only in the S. maritima.

  • A neem based product, Suneem-G (granules) alone as well as in combination with urea was tested against root-knot nematode, Meloidogyne incognita, on okra (Abelmoschus esculentum) in clay pots of 20-cm-diameter, containing 2 kg sterilized soil, inoculated with 2,000 freshly hatched second stage juveniles (J$_2$) of M. incognita. Application of different dosages of Suneem-G with or without urea significantly reduced nematode population and incidence of galling on okra roots and increased vegetative plant growth compared with the untreated control. Suneem-G with urea was the most effective and its effect increased with the increase of dosage. Suneem-G 6 g+urea 25 g per pot gave maximum plant growth and root gall reduction, as plants shoot and root lengths were increased by 84 and 58% and root galling was reduced by 58%, respectively. The lowest dosage of Suneem-G alone, 2 g per pot increased shoot and root lengths of plants by 25.7 and 17%, respectively, and reduced root galling by 24%. The lowest effect was recorded in the pots treated with 25 g urea alone; shoot and root lengths were increased and root galling was decreased by 14% each.

  • As the zygotic embryo of North American ginseng (Panax quinquefolius L.) matured during stratification over 203 days it grew from 0.75 to 5.2 mm. Embryo excision and culturing on media containing different concentrations of two growth regulators, gibberellic acid ($GA_3$, 1 to 10 ${\mu}M$) and benzyladenine (BA, 1 to 5 ${\mu}M$), during stratification, showed that shoot and root number and the shoot, root and cotyledon length increased with increased stratification time. Gibberellic acid was the more effective growth regulator for increasing shoot and root number and shoot, root and cotyledon lengths. Immature embryos (stratified for up to 63 days) needed growth regulators for further development. Cultures on $GA_3$ at the last culture date (stratified for 203 days) when embryos were mature, produced multiple shoots but there was no effect of $GA_3$ concentration. Benzyladenine inhibited shoot and root growth regardless of embryo stratification. Growth regulators had little effect on cotyledon length of mature embryos. Embryos cultured on $GA_3$ combined with BA were green on all culture dates whereas greening in the control and BA treatments increased with culture date. The BA treatments induced 100% swelling of the embryos on the final culture date while in the control and $GA_3$ treatments there was no swelling. There was little or no curling in the control and BA treatments and a linear decrease in curling with culture date in the $GA_3$ and $GA_3$ + BA treatments.

  • The aim of this study was to investigate changes in 7 nutritional components (fatty acid, protein, fat, ash, total dietary fiber (TDF), $\gamma$-aminobutyric acid (GABA), and $\gamma$-oryzanol) of paddy rice (PR) and brown rice (BR) throughout the germination process, as measured at different shoot lengths (10 mm, 20 mm, and 30 mm). With the increase of shoot length, the nutritional components' concentrations increased, as compared to the concentrations measured before germination. Moreover, BR exhibited higher GABA, $\gamma$-oryzanol, and protein than PR. Among the components, TDF, GABA, and $\gamma$-oryzanol showed significant concentration differences throughout germination, while the others exhibited only slight variations. In particular, GABA and $\gamma$-oryzanol were predominantly increased in grains of 10 mm shoot length. These compounds might prove to be important factors from germinated rice. Additionally, the germinated cultivar 'Keunnun' might also prove to be a very important food source, owing to its high GABA and $\gamma$-oryzanol contents. These results suggest that variations in nutritional components related to the increase of shoot length may prove to be important when considering the beneficial aspects of rice on human health.

  • Regardless of the test species, germination was adversely affected by the different concentrations of the acidic and neutral fractions of sunflower root exudates while the basic and aqueous fractions had no effect on germination. In both test species, root lengths were inhibited slightly more than shoot lengths. Significant reduction in fresh weights of the test species was observed when the test species were treated with the acidic and neutral fractions but not with the basic and aqueous fractions. Six compounds, hydroquinone, ${\beta}$-resorcyclic acid, vanillic acid, caffeic acid, salicylic acid, and quercetin, were characterized from the acidic fraction. Seven compounds, hydroquinone, gentisic acid, ${\beta}$-resorcyclic acid, vanillic acid, caffeic acid, ferulic acid, and quercetin, were elucidated from the neutral fraction.

  • The influence of increasing livel (0.0, 0.05, 0.1, 0.2, 0.4, 0.6, 0.8, 1.2, 1.6, and 2.0%) fo NaCl on the germination of red fescue (Festuca rubra) 'Sea Breeze', tall fesce(Festucaarundinacea) 'Pixie', creeping red fescue (Festuca rubra ssp. rubra) 'Cindy', annual rye-grass (Lolium multiflorum) 'Permer Ⅱ', perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne) 'Pennant', fairway wheatgrass(Agropyron cristatum), creeping bentgrass (Agrostis palustris) 'Penncross', and kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis) 'Nuglade' was investigated. Red fescue 'Sea Breeze', tall fescue 'Pixie', and creeping red fescue 'Cindy' had greater than 90% seed germination at NaCl concentrations of 0.2% or lower, while showing similar seeding shoot and root lengths and TAA50 values as the control. Creeping red fescue 'Cindy'gave at 0.6% or higher NaCl. Perennial ryegrass 'Pennant' and annual ryegrass 'Permer Ⅱ' showed more than 95% seed germination when NaCl concentrations were 0.4% and 0.8%, respectively. Fairway wheatgrass, creeping bentgrass 'Penncross' and Kentucky bluegrass 'Nugade' had showing similar germination percent, shoot and root lengths and T50 values as the control at NaCl concentrations of 0.1% or lower. In general, germination percent and the lengthes of seedling roots and shoots of all species tested decreased as NaCl concentrations iscreased. The T50 values became greater as NaCl concentration increased. Seed fermination in red fescue 'Sea Breeze', tall fescue 'Pixie',perennial ryegrass 'Pennant', and annual ryegrass 'Permer Ⅱ' was compoetely inhibited at 2.0% NaCl. Creeping red fescue 'Cindy' and fairway wheatgrass gardly germinated at 1.6% MaCl. Creeping bentgrass 'Penncross' and Dentucky bluegrass 'Nuglade' showed a complete inhibition of germination at 1.2% and 0.6% NaCl, respectively.

  • To examine the ecological characteristics of seagrasses growing naturally in Dokdo, shoot morphology and density of seagrasses in a study site each from Dongdo and Seodo, where seagrasses occurred, were investigated in September 2016. In the study sites, Phyllospadix japonicus Makino, a protected seagrass species, was found to be scattered, forming small clusters. P. japonicus shoots from the study sites in Dongdo and Seodo were morphologically similar. The mean leaf width was 2.0 mm at both study sites in Dongdo and Seodo. Numbers of leaves per shoot was 4.8 and 4.7, and the leaf lengths were 42.5 cm and 41.9 cm, in Dongdo and Seodo, respectively. The shoot densities were $3,500{\pm}334.2shoots\;m^{-2}$ and $2,275{\pm}415.1shoots\;m^{-2}$, in Dongdo and Seodo, respectively, with no significant difference. Shoot density and morphological chacteristics of P. japonicus in Dokdo were similar to those on the eastern coast of the Korean peninsula.

  • Seasonal biomass and carbon, nitrogen contents change of marsh club-rush (Schoenoplectus trigueter) was investigated in Nakdong river estuary, located near Busan, Korea. New shoot of S. trigueter sprouted from tuber in April and fast growth season was followed until mature in August. Mature lengths of shoot and root were 60 and 9.4 cm, respectively. The increase of biomass showed similar seasonal trends with length. Mature biomass were $3.5gind^{-1}$ in wet weight and $0.6gind^{-1}$ in dry weight. The biomass of S. trigueter in areal basis was also highest during July and August ($186gDWm^{-2}$). The shoot of S. trigueter was disappeared in October from the ground but the biomass of shoot was maintained as a form of detritus in sediment. The amount of S. trigueter detritus was about 30~50% of the biomass in August. During winter, the amount of detritus decreased with time but the biomass of root+tuber remained same, implying the root+tuber part is alive. The net productivity of S. trigueter estimated from biomass change were $538gDWm^{-2}yr^{-1}$, $240g-Cm^{-2}yr^{-1}$, $8.2g-Nm^{-2}yr^{-1}$ in dry weight, carbon and nitrogen equivalent respectively. During winter, carbon to nitrogen ratio in detritus increased implying the preferred remineralization of nitrogen during microbial degradation.
