An improvement of driving motor burning damages on a couplingless type warship fire pump is studied. The pump consists of an induction motor a pump-motor shaft and a volute type impeller. The burning damage had occured by changing the material of the pump-motor shaft from carbon steel(SM 45C) to stainless steel(STS 316) for improving anti-corrision properity in sea water. It is shown that a material change on the pump-motor shaft can reduce the efficiency of driving motor and may cause motor burning in the process of pump development stage. This kind of motor burning problem can be solved by increasing the efficiency of the motor and changing the geometry of the inner parts.

The maritime sector is advancing with dedicated endeavor to reduce greenhouse gas in addressing issues with regards to global warming. Since 01 January 2013, the International Maritime Organization (IMO) regulation mandatory requirement for Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI) has been in place and should be satisfied by newly-built ships of more than 400 gross tonnage and the Ship Energy Efficiency Management Plan (SEEMP) for all ships type. Therefore, compliance to this necessitates planning during the design stage whereas verification can be carried-out through an acceptable method during sea trial. The MEPC-approved 2013 guidance, ISO 15016 and ISO 19019 on EEDI serves the purpose for calculation and verification of attained EEDI value. Individual ships EEDI value should be lower than the required value set by these regulations. The key factors for EEDI verification are power and speed assessment and their synchronization. The shaft power can be measured by telemeter system using strain gage during sea trial. However, calibration of shaft power onboard condition is complicated. Hence, it relies only on proficient technology that operates within the permitted ISO allowance. On the other hand, the ship speed can be measured and calibrated by differential ground positioning system (DGPS). An actual test on a newly-built vessel was carried out to assess the correlation of power and speed. The Energy-efficiency Design Index or Operational Indicator Monitoring System (EDiMS) software developed by the Dynamics Laboratory-Mokpo Maritime University (DL-MMU) and Green Marine Equipment RIS Center (GMERC) of Mokpo Maritime University was utilized for this investigation. In addition, the software can continuously monitor air emission and is a useful tool for inventory and ship energy management plan. This paper introduces the synchronization and identification method between shaft power and ship speed for EEDI verification in accordance with the ISO guidance.
The main reason for applying positive pressure variable clearance packing in fossil power plant is high efficiency and energy saving movement in the government. This study intends to analyze the turbine efficiency through the shaft packing improvement in thermal power plant and makes its comparison to that of the used packing.
In this study, the effects of inclined shaft angle on the hydro-acoustic performance of cavitating marine propellers are investigated by a numerical method developed before and Brown's empirical formula. The cavitating blades are represented by source and vortex elements. The cavity characteristics of the blades such as cavitation form, cavity volume, cavity length etc., are computed at a given cavitation number and at a set advance coefficient. A lifting surface method is applied for these calculations. The numerical lifting surface method is validated with experimental results of DTMB 4119 model benchmark propeller. After calculation of hydrodynamic characteristics of the cavitating propeller, noise spectrum and overall sound pressure level (OASPL) are computed by Brown's equation. This empirical equation is also validated with another numerical results found in the literature. The effects of inclined shaft angle on thrust coefficient, torque coefficient, efficiency and OASPL values are examined by a parametric study. By modifying the inclination angles of propeller, the thrust, torque, efficiency and OASPL are computed and compared with each other. The influence of the inclined shaft angle on cavity patterns on the blades are also discussed.

An efficiency test for generators is generally required in case of construction of a new power plant or replacement of an existing generator. Generally, the efficiency of generator is measured by the input-output ratio under any given condition. Therefore, the best way is to directly measure the value of input and output power of a generator and calculate the efficiency values. However, it is difficult to measure a generator's input values accurately, especially for large systems. So, we are usually measuring the losses of the generator. But for measuring these values, there are several constraints for test such as preparing additional power generator and releasing the protection relay for manual operation of auxiliary equipments. Therefore, this study suggests that a novel generator efficient test method using the shaft-torque method which can be carried out while the generator is normally operating. The reliability of the result value was verified by comparing with the efficiency test results of the conventional retardation method on IEEE Std 115-1995.

Continuously variable transmission(CVT) mechanisms considered here combine the functions of a 2K-H I type differential gear unit and a V-belt continuously variable unit(CVU). One shaft of the V-belt CVU is connected directly to the differential gear unit and remaining shaft of it is linked to the output shaft. These mechanisms have many advantage which are the decrease of CVT size, the increase of overall efficiency, the extension of speed ratio range, and the generation of geared neutral. In this paper six different mechanisms of output coupled type CVT are proposed. Some useful theoretical formula related to speed ratio, power flow and efficiency are derived and analyzed, and theoretical analysis are proven by various experiments.
This study was conducted to investigate the feasbility of continuously variable V-belt transmission(CVVT) as automatic power transmission system of combine harvesters. An experimental set-up for testing the performance of CVVT and the automatic transmission system was designed and used to analyze the power transmission characteristics of CVVT. The transmission efficiency of CVVT was increased logarithmically with increase of the load of driven shaft, but was not affected by the speed ratios of transmission. More than 80% of transmission efficiency was obtained in the 25N-m load and more of driven-shaft, and the maximum efficiency was 88~91%. When rapid speed change of the CVVT was attempted, the speed of driven shaft was stabilized within about 0.4 seconds after shift operation in both cases of increasing and decreasing of the speed.

According as diesel automobile are produced, reduce noise and vibration that is occurred by characteristic of diesel engine, and need engine room layout optimization and research for light weight of parts. Balance Shaft Module is module parts for vehicles engine to improve performance and efficiency of engine and reduce noise and vibration. These days, an oil pump integrated balance shaft module and an oil sump integrated balance shaft module is on the rising for optimizing of engine room. In this study, produced prototype of oil pump integrated type balance shaft module, and achieved dynamic characteristic test about experimental modal analysis and noise/vibration of balance shaft module.

Vibration in Engine module could be reduced by introducing a balance shaft module which has one or more unbalanced rotors. Since the unbalanced rotor is installed in an opposite direction of the free force or unbalance moment by engine component, the unexpected vibration could be decreased kinematically. The essential equation of the unbalanced rotor was Presented for two cases, 3 in-line and 4 in-line cylinder engine type, And the efficiency of the balance shaft is investigated by the vehicle testing that is focused on measuring the reduced vibration level when adapting a balancing module. With the signal processing of measured signals, some important issues on design the balancing shaft could be derived and the overall design process is explained in the final part including the peripheral component, i.e. housing and bush.

Misaligned shafts of the rotating machinery have caused noise, vibration. bearing failures, and stress concentration of coupling parts which decrease the efficiency and life of shaft systems. Therefore the proper shaft alignment of those system should be monitored continuously in dynamic condition. To solve these problems under dynamic condition a telemetry system is used. In this study, the condition of the least bending moment which is known by analyzing the structure and stress induced by misalignment is found. After the shaft is aligned by dial gage, a telemetry system with strain gages is installed on shaft. The relationship between bearing displacement and moment of coupling part influenced by misalignment is investigated. The moment derived from two shaft strain at the nearby coupling is measured. The bending strain is measured 5 times for average in static state as well as in dynamic state with 100∼700 rpm.
