  • The analysis and design of skeletal structures is greatly influenced by the behaviour of beam-to-column connections, where patented designs have led to a wide range of types with differing structural quantities. The behaviour of beam-to-column connections plays an important role in the analysis and design of framed structures. This paper presents an overview of the influence of connection behaviour on structural stability, in the in-plane (bending) mode of sway. A computer-based method is presented for geometrically nonlinear plane frames with semi-rigid connections accounting for shear deformations. The analytical procedure employs transcendental modified stability functions to model the effect of axial force on the stiffness of members. The member stiffness matrix were found. The critical load has been searched as a suitable load parameter for the loss of stability of the system. Several examples are presented to demonstrate the validity of the analysis procedure. The method is readily implemented on a computer using matrix structural analysis techniques and is applicable for the efficient nonlinear analysis of frameworks. Combined with a parametric column effective length study, connection and frame stiffness are used to propose a method for the analysis of semi-rigid frames where column effective lengths are greatly reduced and second order (deflection induced) bending moments in the column may be distributed via the connectors to the beams, leading to significant economies.

  • As it has been well appreciated from the viewpoint of efficiency, The weld-induced deformation control is one of the most important issues in marine structure production. In the case of thin plate block, weld-induced deformation is more serious than in the case of relatively thick plate block. The heat affect zone of thin plates is wider than that of thick plates with the same heat input. Among weld-induced deformations, the buckling deformation by the shrinkage and residual stress in the weld line direction is one of the most serious deformation types. This paper is concerned with controlling buckling deformations for the thin plate fillet welds, by using the tensioning method. A numerical analysis was carried out to illustrate several dominant buckling modes due to compressive residual stress in the fillet weldsof thin plates. Then, weld tests were carried out for 20 specimens with varying plate thickness, and with different magnitudes and directions for the tension load. The results graphically represented to shaw the effect of the tensioning method in reducing the weld-induced deformation. From the present findings, it was seen that the tensioning method is a useful way to control weld-induced deformations in the fillet welds of thin plates.

  • Although several types of rigid shear connectors have been developed particularly to increase load-carrying capacity, application is limited due to the complicated details of such connection. In this study, push-out tests were performed for specimens with hybrid shear connectors using headed studs and shear plates to identify the effects of each parameter on the structural performance of such shear connection. The test parameters included steel ratios of headed stud to shear plate, connection length, and embedded depth of shear plates. The peak strength and residual strength were estimated using various shear transfer mechanisms such as stud shear, concrete bearing, and shear friction. The hybrid shear connectors using shear plates and headed studs showed large load-carrying capacity and deformation capacity. The peak strength was predicted by the concrete bearing strength of the shear plates. The residual strength was sufficiently predicted by the stud shear strength of headed studs or by shear friction strength of dowel reinforcing bars. Further, the finite element analysis was performed to verify the shear transfer mechanism of the connection with hybrid shear connector.

  • A differential case equipped with LSD(limited slip differential) has several advantages over a normal type for rear wheel drive vehicles. Specially, the torque distribution can be done between left and right drive wheel in the state of limited slip differential. Also although LSD types are very various according to operating type, medium and torque distribution, a multi-clutch type is generally applied to rear wheel drive vehicles. So, this study presents the analysis of design parameters for development of a friction plate for multi-clutch type LSD using vehicle road test, the simulation of analytical model and the development of vehicle dynamics model by a benchmark product. According to this investigation, the design parameters which are pre-load of coil spring, friction plate and contact area quantity, friction coefficient and TBR(torque bias ratio) for a friction plate are derived from experiment and simulation and consequently, vehicle dynamics model has been constructed for the development of friction plate for multi-clutch type LSD.

  • The performance of a newly designed wastewater treatment process equipped with an anaerobic and two intermittent aeration tanks operated alternately was investigated. During the experimental period, several types of cyclic operating schedules with different aeration and non aeration time were examined for the optimization. At all modes, the removals of organic matter and SS were highly achieved. With respect to T-N removal, however, the cycle length for aeration on/off affected the efficiencies. At the optimal operating mode, the ORP bending point indicating the disappearance of nitrate was observed. Considering the influent wastewater characteristics and cyclic operating schedules, it can be suggested that T-P removal is much more BOD/T-P ratio and/or its load dependant rather than the aeration on/off time. The results obtained from pilot-scale test showed the competitive advantage of this alternating process through an omission of nitrate recycle and operational flexibility against influent load variations when comparing with other continuous flow processes.

  • As the demands of ocean resource development increase, many offshore structures are required. To cope with the active ocean developments, many types of construction methods have been applied for offshore facilities, including oil, gas and harbors. One of the challenges is to transport and install the heave bridge caisson. Several construction methods are well understood. However, for the sake of safety and reliability, the F/D installation method can be utilized. While the caisson is carried by an F/D, the mooring force of the tug boat and the structure stability from exiting motions in the dock should be checked against external loadings and sea conditions. The external loads can be classified with wind force, current force, and wave force. In the stability analysis, transportation velocity and draft of F/D are important factors. The dynamic stability and hook load for crane barge installation for the same caisson are also studied. Considering external loads and dominant factors, the stability of caisson during transportation has been investigated.

  • The live loads acting on structures are generally computed in terms of equivalent uniformly distributed loads for the simplicity in design process. The loads, therefore, tend to decrease with increasing influence area in both load intensity and variance. Since multi-story column loads result from accumulation of loadings acting on several different floors, its influence area becomes wider and lifetime maximum decreases. In the design codes proposing the design loads for types of structural members (i.e., slabs, beams, columns), not for tile change of influence area, some proper reduction factors are given for columns which support more than one floor. Using the live load models developed for colons supporting single floor, in this study, the probabilistic characteristics of multi-story column loads are analyzed. In addition reduction factors given for multi-story columns in current practice are calibrated.

  • The purpose of this study is to model and analyze retractable large spatial structures by applying parametric modeling techniques. The modeling of wind loads in the analysis of typical structures including curved surfaces can be error-prone, and the processing time increases dramatically when there are many types of variables. However, the method based on StrAuto that was developed in previous research, facilitates the efficacious assignment of wind loads to structures and the rapid arrival of conclusions. As a result, it is possible to compare alternatives with various loads, including wind loads, to determine an optimal alternative much faster than the existing process. Further, it is almost impossible to directly input the wind load by calculating the area of an irregularly curved surface. However, the proposed method automatically assigns the wind load, which allows for automatic optimization in a structural analysis system. The approach was applied and optimized using several models, and the results are presented.

  • Several design methods from overseas are employed without considering different conditions such as material properties, climate, and traffic condition in this country. Therefore, there are limitations in application. Therefore, new pavement analysis system which is able to design a pavement efficiently and economically should be set up. In this study, 243 probable sections are classified depending on values of layer thickness and elastic modulus, and the effect of load types for the probable sections are analyzed. The section showing larger load distribution is chosen for analysis. As a result of sensitivity, a layer thickness has more influence on pavement than an elastic modulus does. The stress distribution of FWD test load is larger than that of circular load. This study compares outputs between nonlinear elastic model and linear elastic model. Based on the result, this study finds nonlinear elastic model considering stress condition in the ground is recommended for subbase.
