Effect of Capsule Position on the Seed Germination and Juvenile Growth of Sesame (Sesamum indicum L.) (삭과의 착생부위(着生部位)가 참깨종자(種子)의 발아(發芽) 및 초기생육(初期生育)에 미치는 영향(影響))

  • To obtain the information on the germination and initial growth of the sesame, the seed of 6 sesame cultivars obtained from upper and lower position of plants were seeded and the results on the germination and initial growth were summarized as follows; 1. When the seeding time was delayed, the days to flower of all sesame cultivars were significantly decreased. And the shortening rate of days to flower by delaying seeding time showed significant differences among the sesame cultivars. 2. At all cultivars excluding IS 103, the germination percentage of the seeds obtained from lower position of sesame plant was significantly higher than those from upper position. 3. Germination percentage of IS 103 seeds from lower position of sesame plant was 20.0% at petri dish experiment and 75.0% at pot experiment and those from upper position of the stem was 17.0% at petri dish experiment and 72.5% at pot experiment, respectively. 4. The germination speed of all cultivars showed a same tendency as germination percentage, but the germination speed of cultivars at pot experiment was higher than those at petri dish experiment. 5. The sesame seedlings from lower position seed were increased in stem length, root length, leaf length and fresh weight than those from upper position seed. The germination percentage and the initial growth showed significant differences by the seed weight in same cultivar, however did not show any varietal differences.

Characterizations of Yields and Seed Components of Sesame (Sesamum indicum L.) as Affected by Soil Moisture from Paddy Field Cultivation

  • Accurate and optimal water supply to cereal crop is critical in growing stalks and producing maximum yields. Recently, upland crops are cultivated in paddy field soils to reduce overproduced rice in Korea. In order to increase productivity of cereal crops in paddy fields which have poor percolation and drainage properties, it is necessary to fully understand crop response to excessive soil water condition and management of soil drainage system in paddy field. The objectives of this study were to investigate effects of excessive soil water to sesame growth and to quantify stress response using groundwater levels. Two cultivars of sesame were selected to investigate; Gunbak and Areum. These sesames were planted in paddy fields located in Miryang, Gyeongnam with different soil drainage levels and drainage systems. The experiment site was divided into two plots by drainage class; very poorly and somewhat poorly drained. Two different drainage systems were applied to alleviate excessive soil water in each plot: open ditch and pipe drainage system. Soil water contents and groundwater levels were measured every hour during growing season. Pipe drainage system was significantly effective to alleviate wet injury for sesame in paddy fields. Pipe drainage system decreased average soil moisture content and groundwater level during sesame cultivation. This resulted in greater yield and lignan contetns in sesame seeds than ones from open ditch system. Comparison between two cultivars, Gunbak had greater decrease in growth and yield by excessive soil water and high groundwater level than Areum. Seed components (lignan) showed decrease in seeds as soil water increased. When soil moisture content was greater than 40%, lignan content tended to decrease than ones from less soil moisture content. Based on these results, pipe drainage system would be more effective to reduce wet injury to sesame and increase lignan component in paddy field cultivation.

Effect of Ultrafiltration on the Components of Sesame Protein Concentrates (한외여과가 참깨박 농축단백질의 성분에 미치는 영향)

  • Defatted sesame flour is the by-products obtained after oil extracting process. Although this flour has high quality and quantity of protein its use is limited only for animal feed and fertilization. Sesame seeds contain antinutrients such as oxalate, phytate and phenol compounds and these compounds lower their nutritive value. recently, ultrafiltration(UF) has been used to concentrate protein from various food sources. This study was carried out to examine the effects of UF with different membrane pore size on the components of sesame protein concentrates including antinutrients and to compare with that of conventional acid-precipitated sesame protein isolate. The protein contents of sesame protein concentrates prepared by JF using 10K, 30K, 100K were 84.2%, 82.7%, 76.4% and the protein yields were 36.44%, 34.69, 31.43% and the protein contents was 88.7% Alkali extraction process at pH 9.0 followed by UF technique reduced oxalate and phytate content. There were 85% and 94% reduction of oxalate and phytate content by UF with membrane pore size of 100K daltons, respectively. However, the content of total phenol compounds was not reduced by this method. About 99% of calcium and 50% of zinc were removed by UF with membrane of 100K daltons. total essential amino acid contents of sesame protein concentrates prepared by UF were decreased slightly when compared with acid-precipitated sesame protein concentrate.

Determination of the Adulteration of Sesame Oils Sold in Markets by Gas Chromatography (시중 참기름에 혼입된 이종기름에 관하여)

  • This study primarily attempted to establish the method for the determination of the adulteration in the sesame oil. First of all, extensive experiment was conducted to determine the composition of genuine sesame oil prepared from Korean, Japanese, Taiwanese and Chinese sesame seed. Sesamin and sterols in unsaponfiable matter were examined along with fatty acid in saponifiable fraction by Gc. There was no significant difference in the composition of sesamin and sterols in sesame oils prepared from Korean and foreign seeds. The ranges of sesamin and ${\beta}-sitosterol$ against campesterol were 3.32~5.46 and 2.39~2.99 respectively in all samples. Similiar composition of fatty acids was showed in all pure sesame oils, in which the contents were 8.37~lO.09% palmitic acid, 4.61~5.50% stearic acid, 35.24~39.97% oleic acid, 43.04~49.76% linoleic acid, O.21~O.31% linolenic acid and 0.40~O.69% arachidic acid. Among the commercial sesame oils sold in Markets, three sesame oils from Japan revealed low sesamin, high linoleic acid and linolenic acid, and low oleic acid and stearic acid, suggesting the adulteration with soybean oil.

Selection of Varieties with Higher Cultural Stability in Sesamum indicum (재배적 안정성이 높은 참깨 계통 선발)

  • This study was conducted to select sesame varieties with high cultural stabilities by comparing several parameters of agronomic traits under the different cultural environments. Of the six areas, Iksan and Jinju areas which showed positively larger environment index values were relatively adequate cultural conditions for sesame. At the comparison of cultural stability of agronomic traits by Eberhart and Russell regression model among sesame breeding lines, Suwon 169 showed more stable regression coefficient values to the number of capsules per plant, number of seeds per capsule and seed weight per plant, and Iksan 12 showed more stable regression coefficient values to culm length and weight per plant. At the comparison of cultural stability of yield per 10a, Suwon 169 and Iksan 12 among sesame breeding lines showed more stable respectively, deviation values of 0.99, 0.98 respectively, and more less regression deviation values of 0.074, 0.167 respectively. Therefore those breeding lines are comparatively higher stabilities to yield determining agronomic traits under the different cultural environments, and it was concluded that those two breeding lines had the possibility to recommend promising breeding lines in the future.

The Effects of Phosphate to the Growth and Oil Contents in Sesame(Sesamum indicum L.) (참깨의 단경, 분지형에 있어서 인산함량이 함유율과 지상부 생육에 미치는 영향)

  • Effects of phosphorous fertilizer on the growth habit and yield of monoculm and branch types of two leading sesame varieties was investigated. The photosynthetic rate of at each growing stage was high at the flowering stage. The photosynthetic rate of monoculm sesame variety, Pungnyeon was high prior to flowering stage, while the Kwangsan variety, branch type was high after the flowering stage. The level of phosphate were most effective in increasing photosynthesis when standard level of fertilizer was applied in both varieties. Kwangsan variety showed higher photosynthetic rate per unit area, higher NAR, and CGR and higher LAR and RGR at the maximum flowering stage than the Pungnyoeon variety. Those characters attained maximum level when standard levels of phosphorous fertilizer were applied. The protein and oil content of seeds were higher in Kwangsan variety compared with Pungnyeon. However, the carbohydrate of seeds was high for Pungnyeon variety. The highest protein content was attained when standard level of fertilizer were applied. The oil content appeared to increase as the level of applied fertilizer increased. The results suggest that the vegetative growth and seed yields of sesame may be enough with present level of fertilizers. However, higher amount of phosphorous fertilizer may be required to increase the oil content of sesame seeds.

Study on the Germinability of Sesame Seeds at Lower Temperature (참깨 품종들의 저온발아성에 과한 연구)

  • The objective of this study was to test germinability of sesame (Sesamum indicum L.) varieties at low temperatures. Seeds of III sesame varieties representing different maturity groups and countries were tested at four different temperatures between $10^{\circ}C$ and $16^{\circ}C$. Average germination percentages of III varieties were 92%, 57% and 3.3% at $16^{\circ}C, 14{\circ}C$ and $12^{\circ}C$.respectively. The highest daily germination percentage was observed after 4 days of incubation at $16^{\circ}C$, while it was after 8 days at $14^{\circ}C$. A regression analysis indicated that $15^{\circ}C$ as the minimum temperature for satisfactory germination in field conditions. In general, Korean local collections had better germinability than introduced varieties from 6 countries at different latitudes. 'San dong', a Korean local cultivar. showed the highest germination percentage (24%) at $12^{\circ}C$ when the average germination percentage of all varieties was as low as $3.3^{\circ}C$. Early maturity varieties germinated better at $12^{\circ}C$ and $14^{\circ}C$ than medium or late maturity groups, but no difference was observed at $16^{\circ}C$. Although larger seeds showed better germinability within a variety, there seems to be no relationship between seed size and germinability in sesame.in sesame.

Organic Residues Analysis of Oil Bottle of Goryeo Dynasty Excavated from the Soejeoul Site, Geumneung-dong, Chungju (충주 금릉동 쇠저울유적 출토 고려시대 유병의 유기물 분석)

  • Organic residues are substances derived from diverse natural sources. Recent scientific analysis of organic residues has yielded important information in restoring the lifestyles of ancient peoples. In this study, the organic material contained within the celadon oil bottle of the Goryeo dynasty, excavated from the Soejoul site in Geumneung-dong, Chungju, was analyzed using Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and gas chromatograph-mass spectrometer (GC-MS). The results showed that the organic materials in the bottle were plant-derived oils. In particular, polyunsaturated fatty acids and phytosterols were detected using GC-MS analysis. Sesamin components were also identified. Sesamin, which is a characteristic component of sesame seeds, is a lignan and an antioxidant. As the organic residues in the oil bottle were derived from sesame seeds, it is presumed that sesame oil was stored in the bottle.

Occurrence of Sesame Phyllody Disease in Korea and Detection of Its Phytoplasma (참깨 엽화병의 발생과 파이토플라스마의 검출)

  • In August 1996, phyllody disease of sesame (Sesamum indicum L.) caused by phytoplasmas was observed at Boeun, Chungbuk Province, Korea. Symptoms included extreme proliferation of growing tips and numerous small leaves, giving the infected plant a witche's-broom effect. Parts or all of the floral parts were transformed into green leaf-like structures, and little or no seeds were produced. Transmission Electron microscopy revealed the presence of phytoplasmas in the phloem sieve elements of infected plant. Since the infected sesame plants were growing near by phytoplasma infected jujubes (Zizyphus jujubu), we tried a polymerase chain reaction (PCR) technique to identify these two causal phytoplasmas. The DNA extracted from the stems of infected sesame plant was PCR-amplified using a primer set specific to 16S rRNA gene of known phytoplasmas. The amplification generated a 1.4kb band in both sesame samples and phytoplasma-infected jujubes, which also suggests the sesame plants were infected with phytoplasmas. The restriction digestion of the amplified band by four different enzymes, AluI, HaeIII, HinfI or TaqI revealed that the phytoplasmas infecting jujubes and sesame plants were of different groups.

Minimizing Benzo(a)pyrene Content in the Manufacturing of Sesame Oil and Perilla Oil (참기름과 들기름의 제조조건에 따른 벤조피렌 함량 변화)

  • This study was carried out to identify the cause of benzo(a)pyrene[B(a)P] production during the manufacture of sesame oil and perilla oil, and to minimize such B(a)P synthesis. The distribution of B(a)P in sesame seed and perilla seed differed with seed-growing district, the range was $0.06{\sim}0.31{\mu}g/kg$ in domestic seed and $0.12{\sim}0.47{\mu}g/kg$ in imported seed. B(a)P contents after roasting at $220^{\circ}C$ for 20 min in sesame seed and perilla seed were $1.87{\sim}2.47{\mu}g/kg$ and $2.12{\sim}2.43{\mu}g/kg$, respectively, and levels in oils obtained from the roasted seeds were $3.68{\mu}g/kg$ and $4.64{\mu}g/kg$, respectively. These data refer to seeds subjected to codsed roasting. With open roasting, the levels were $0.63{\mu}g/kg$ and $0.56{\mu}g/kg$, respectively. Closed roasting resulted in absorption of B(a)P, with consequent high levels in oils. We introduced forced ventilation during closed roasting. We tested various methods to remove B(a)P from sesame oil and perilla oil. Neither centrifugation nor filtering with diatomite and diatomiteactive carbon removed B(a)P. A filtering method using active carbon was effective. But this method adversely affected the color and flavor of sesame oil and perilla oil.
