  • Recently, a series of massive earthquakes have been occurred northeast Asia and there has also been constant sensible earthquakes in South Korea. Particularly, after diagnosing educational facilities with Sichuan earthquake momentum, remodeling construction of old educational facilities and buildings which were not designed not to resist earthquake are actively underway. Remodeling construction sites, however, are mostly small construction sites which consist of less than 30 full-time laborers, where a number of deaths from a fall occur by improper uses of protective gear. Therefore, to reduce the disaster from a fall caused by inadequate uses of protective gear in domestic small construction sites such as those for remodeling, this study conducts research into ways of decreasing accident rates by suggesting providing and administering protective gear as a national project so that donning protective gear is activated.

  • The severe shortage of the available sites in the highly developed downtown area in Korea necessitates the construction of high-rise buildings which meet the need of residence and commercial activity simultaneously. The objective of this study is to investigate the seismic performance of this type of building structures. For this purpose, two 1:12 scale 17-story reinforced concrete model structures were constructed according to the similitude law, in which the upper 15 stories have a bearing-wall system while the lower 2-story frames with infilled shear wall have two different layouts of the plan : The one has symmetric plan and the other has unsymmetric plan. Then, this model was subjected to a series of earthquake excitations. The test results show that the layout of shear wall has the negligible effect on the natural period and the base shear coefficient, but great effect on the failure mode of beam-column joint at flexible side frame.

  • Recent development of fiber optic sensor technology has provided an excellent choice for civil engineers for performance monitoring of civil infrastructures. Fiber optic sensors have the advantages of small dimensions, good resolution and accuracy, as well as excellent ability to transmit signal at long distances. They are also immune to electromagnetic and radio frequency interference and may incorporate a series of interrogated sensors multiplexed along a single fiber. These advantages make fiber optic sensors a better method than traditional damage detection methods and devices to some extent. This paper provides a review of recent developments in fiber optic sensor technology as well as some applications of fiber optic sensors to the performance monitoring of civil infrastructures such as buildings, bridges, pavements, dams, pipelines, tunnels, piles, etc. Existing problems of fiber optic sensors with their applications to civil structural performance monitoring are also discussed.

  • This study is the seventh of series that have been interpreted as the view of regionalism for the block plans and floor plans of the traditional houses spreaded in Kyoung-Sang-Buck-Do Privince, and is investigated its subject in Sung-ju area. The purpose of study is to be analyzed the block types of the houses and the floor plans of An-chae(ladys inner house) and declared the typical case on the characteristics on each housing elements to Buk-Bi-Go-Teak on the conclusion. The block plan of the high-leveled traditional houses in Sung-ju area is typically the courtyard type that is opening at sides that 3 to 5 of I-shaped or L-shaped buildings are composed. The floor plan of An-chae is mostly typed I-shaped and its bay system is semi-lineal type(Teo-Kan-Gip).

  • Building structures which are in need of large open space make the damping effect of the structures decrease greatly. Assembly and office buildings with a lower natural frequency have a higher possibility of experiencing excessive vibration induced by human activities. These excessive vibration make the residents uncomfortable and the serviceability deterioration. The loads induced by human activities were classified into two types. First type is in place loads as like jumping, foot stamping and body bouncing. The other type is moving loads as like walking, running and dancing. A series of laboratories experiments had been conducted to study the dynamic loads induced by human activities, The earlier works were mainly concerned to parameters study of dynamic loads as like activity type, weight, sex, surface condition of structure and etc. In this paper, we have measured directly the walking loads by using the platform. And we have evaluated and analyzed load-time history of walking loads. One of the most important parameter is pacing rate (walking speed) in the walking loads. The difference between the maximum value and minimum value of walking loads depends on the walking speed.

  • This thesis investigates the behavior of precast wall systems with a new vertical connection which are proportioned by the displacement based design. The proposed precast wall systems are supposed to provide additional spaces and seismic strengthening in remodeling existing residential buildings. For a fast remodeling constructions using PC wails require an efficient, economic fabrication method. A C-type vertical connections for PC wall systems is proposed for transfer of bending moment between walls in the vertical direction while a shear key in the center of wall is prepared to transfer shear forces by bearing. The proposed vertical connection allows us easy fabrication because of different direction of slots at the edges of wall. The dimension of C-type connection components are determined by engineering models and a series of test.

  • In this paper passive seismic retrofit devices for building structures developed by the author in recent years are introduced. The proposed damping devices were developed by slightly modifying the configuration of conventional devices and enhancing their effectiveness. First a seismic retrofit system consisting of a pin-jointed steel frame and rotational friction dampers installed at each corner of the steel frame was developed. Then two types of steel slit dampers were developed; box-type slit damper and multi-slit damper. In addition, hybrid dampers were developed by combining a slit damper and a friction damper connected in parallel. Finally a self-centering system was developed by using preloaded tendons and viscous dampers connected in series. For each retrofit system developed, an appropriate analytical model was developed, and the seismic performance was verified by loading test and earthquake analysis of case study structures. The experimental and analysis results show that the proposed systems can be used efficiently to enhance the seismic performance of building structures.

  • Generally, the instrumentation scheme for urban excavation projects consist of a series of tools such as inclinometer piezometer, loadcell, tiltmeter etc. Because almost every equipments are placed along several typical lines, it is impossible to evaluate the whole behavior of structures and adjacent buildings simultaneously. With laser scanning technique developed for surveying, all visible structures are scanned in the form of 3D digital data in a time schedule as planned. It can be analysed effectively the movements for all area affected by excavation even the spots in where no instrumentation tools. Although there are some parts to be refined such as scanning error, proper analysing software, it gives many advantages for realistic instrumentation works in the near future.

  • The use of local two-sided and three-sided jacketing for the repair and strengthening of reinforced concrete beam-column joints damaged by severe earthquakes is investigated experimentally and analytically. Two exterior beam-column joint specimens ($O_1$ and $O_2$) were submitted to a series of cyclic lateral loads to simulate severe earthquake damage. The specimens were typical of existing older structures built in the 1960s and 1970s. The specimens were then repaired and strengthened by local two-sided or three-sided jacketing according to UNIDO Manual guidelines. The strengthened specimens ($RO_1$ and $RO_2$) were then subjected to the same displacement history as that imposed on the original specimens. The repaired and strengthened specimens exhibited significantly higher strength, stiffness and better energy dissipation capacity than the original specimens.
