  • According to topics or speaker's intentions in a dialogue, utterance spoken by speaker has a different sentence structure of word combinations. Based on these facts, we have proposed the statistical approach. IDT(intention decision table), which is modeling the correlations between sentence patterns and the intention. In a IDT, the sentence is splitted into 5 different factors, and the intention of a sentence is determined by the similarity between and intention and 5 factors that have represent a sentence. From the experimental results, the IDT has indicated that the prediction rate of an intention is improved 10~18% over the word-intention correlations and is enhanced 3~12% compared with the MIG(Markov intention graph) that models the intention with a transition graph for word categories in a sentence. Based on these facts, we have found that the IDT is effective method for the prediction of an intention.

  • This paper investigated the types of errors on English pronunciation and intelligibility of Korean EFL students, and the relationship between the pronunciation accuracy and intelligibility. Thirty one students were evaluated by six English native speakers in terms of overall intelligibility and accuracy In five areas such as nuclear stress, word stress, syllable structure, consonants and vowels. According to the findings of the study, pronunciation errors were made by the subjects more frequently In word stress than any other area of pronunciation accuracy. The Pearson correlation analysis showed that intelligibility was related with word stress, syllable structure, consonants and vowels, and the stepwise multiple regression analysis indicated that, among the above five areas of pronunciation accuracy, word stress best accounted for the intelligibility of a given sentence. In the conclusion, the importance of teaching pronunciation of in those five areas with a special focus on word stress was emphasized m terms of intelligibility.

  • The aim of this presentation is to show the structures and characteristics of English-Korean Machine Translator 'Trannie 96' 'Trannie 06' consists of five main engines and various types of dictionaries. With respect to the engines, the English sentences filtered by Pre-processor are tagged and parsed. After the conversion form English sentence structure to Korean one, 'Trannie 96' constructs Korean sentence. As for dictionaries, each engine has more than one optimized dictionaries. The algorithms employed by this machine is based on Linguistic theories, which make it possible for us to produce speedy and accurate translation.

  • Focus and information structure are closely related with the distribution of pitch accents. A focused word conveys new information and bears a pitch accent. A content word can usually get a pitch accent, but it can be deaccented if it is mentioned earlier in the discourse. In this paper, we test how English native speakers and Korean learners of English realize pitch accents according to focus and information structure of a sentence. The production experiment shows that English native speakers give a pitch accent to narrow-focused items, deaccenting all the other items of the sentence. For VP broad focus, native speakers give a pitch accent either to both the verb and its complement or to the complement only. On the other hand, it is found that Koreans give pitch accents to most content words regardless of focus and information structure. Moreover, the perception experiment confirms that Koreans' intonation patterns, which are not appropriate in terms of focus and information structure, may jeopardize listeners' comprehension. This paper shows that Korean speakers have little knowledge about focus and information structure for intonational realization, and that such notions should be applied to teaching of English intonation.

  • This paper deals with the syntactic analysis algorithms of Korean sentence and system for machine translation. The parts of speech and constituients are syntactically analized at unified view-points and then an effective classification algorithm is proposed. The constituients which are applied an inverse movement transformation algorithm are processed with the concept of attribute. Syntactic analysis system is constructed to generate parsing table including the deep structure of sentence by lexicon proper to the combinational property of Korean and breadth-first searching method. The results obtained from the system program are shown as the parsing table of source sentences.

  • The purpose of this paper is to establish the standard method of evaluation English-to-Korean MT systems We focus on test suites, evaluation procedure and evaluation results. Four computer programs on the market are tested on a test suite consisting of 1,501 sentence, The quality of translation and the capacity of MT system are the key points for evaluation . The sentences in the suite are classified according to the grammatical properties they reveal. The classificatory scheme has the structure of a directory: each sentence belongs to a subclass, which belongs to a major class,. We place the sentences in the test suite on a scale of difficulty (hard ordinary easy) and each output sentence is graded on a scale of four accuracy levels. We also test the programs with respect to their speed.

  • In this paper, a Japanese morphological analyzer for Japanese to Korean Machine Translation System is designed. The analyzer reconstructs the Japanese input sentence into word phrases that include grammatical and dictionary informations. Thus we propose the algorithm to separate morphemes and then connect them by reference to a corresponding Korean word phrases. And we define the connector to control Japanese word phrases It is used in controlling the start and the end point of the word phrase in the Japanese sentence which is without a space. The proposed analyzer uses the analysis dictionary to perform more efficient analysis than the existing analyzer. And we can decrease the number of its dictionary searches. Since the analyzer, proposed in this paper, for Japanese to Korean Machine Translation System processes each word phrase in consideration of the corresponding Korean word phrase, it can generate more accurate Korean expressions than the existing one which places great importance on the generation of the entire sentence structure.

  • Application systems of natural language processing such as machine translation system must deal with actual texts including the full range of linguistic phenomena. But it seems to be impossible that the existing grammar covers completely such actual texts because they include disruptive factors such as long sentences, unexpected sentence patterns and erroneous input to obstruct well-formed analysis of a sentence. In order to solve analysis failure due to the disruptive factors or incorrect selection of correct parse tree among forest parse trees, this paper proposes two-level computational grammar which consists of a constraint-based grammar and an error-tolerant grammar. The constraint-based computational grammar is the grammar that gives us the well-formed analysis of English texts. The error-tolerant computational grammar is the grammar that reconstructs a comprehensible whole sentence structure with partially successful parse trees within failed parsing results.

  • The current speech technology has been aiming to acquire much clearer and more natural synthetic speech sound. The naturalness can be developed by an adequate phrasing of target sentence, of course, which seems to be strongly related to both syntactic and phonetic aspect simultaneously. The present study aims to describe, at one aspect, the relatedness between syntactic structure and prosodic phrasing through dialogue speech, and at the other, to establish a suitable phrasing pattern with respect to the purpose of acquiring more natural synthetic sound. The prosodic phrase, here, means a prosodic unit which can be clearly identified as having an evident break boundary at its final position in a sentence in the sense of both perceptual and acoustical viewpoint. The end of each prosodic phrase is, accordingly, marked as the point of major boundary in a sentence.
