Decentralized energy market-based structural control

  • Control systems are used to limit structural lateral deflections during large external loads such as winds and earthquakes. Most recently, the semi-active control approach has grown in popularity due to inexpensive control devices that consume little power. As a result, recently designed control systems have employed many semi-active control devices for the control of a structure. In the future, it is envisioned that structural control systems will be large-scale systems defined by high actuation and sensor densities. Decentralized control approaches have been used to control large-scale systems that are too complex for a traditional centralized approach, such as linear quadratic regulation (LQR). This paper describes the derivation of energy market-based control (EMBC), a decentralized approach that models the structural control system as a competitive marketplace. The interaction of free-market buyers and sellers result in an optimal allocation of limited control system resources such as control energy. The Kajima-Shizuoka Building and a 20-story benchmark structure are selected as illustrative examples to be used for comparison of the EMBC and centralized LQR approaches.

  • Proactive computing의 핵심 기술인 손동작 인식 (Hand Motion Recognition, HMR) 기술은 인간과 컴퓨터 사이의 상호작용(Human Computer Interaction, HCI) 분야에서 많은 연구가 진행되고 있다. 본 연구에서는 3축 가속도 센서를 부착한 data glove를 제작하고, 3차원 손 모델을 구현한 후, 이를 이용한 손동작 인식 기술을 개발하였다. Data glove는 가상현실에 대한 입력 장치로써 본 논문에서는 3축 가속도 센서를 사용하여 획득된 신호를 wireless communication으로 PC에 전송할 수 있도록 구현하였다. 손 모델링은 ellipsoid를 이용한 kinematic chain 이론 바탕의 3차원 손 모델을 구현하였으며, data glove에서 얻어진 가속도 정보에 rule 기반의 알고리즘을 적용하여 구현된 3차원 손 모델을 통하여 간단한 손동작(가위, 바위, 보)을 인식하였다.

2단계 히든마코프 모델을 이용한 제스쳐의 성능향상 연구 (Improvement of Gesture Recognition using 2-stage HMM)

  • In recent years in the field of robotics, various methods have been developed to create an intimate relationship between people and robots. These methods include speech, vision, and biometrics recognition as well as gesture-based interaction. These recognition technologies are used in various wearable devices, smartphones and other electric devices for convenience. Among these technologies, gesture recognition is the most commonly used and appropriate technology for wearable devices. Gesture recognition can be classified as contact or noncontact gesture recognition. This paper proposes contact gesture recognition with IMU and EMG sensors by using the hidden Markov model (HMM) twice. Several simple behaviors make main gestures through the one-stage HMM. It is equal to the Hidden Markov model process, which is well known for pattern recognition. Additionally, the sequence of the main gestures, which comes from the one-stage HMM, creates some higher-order gestures through the two-stage HMM. In this way, more natural and intelligent gestures can be implemented through simple gestures. This advanced process can play a larger role in gesture recognition-based UX for many wearable and smart devices.

이동 에이전트 미들웨어를 이용한 중복 센서 데이터 제거 (Elimination of the Redundant Sensor Data using the Mobile Agent Middleware)

  • 센서 네트워크 시스템의 센서 노드들은 싱크 노드와 무선으로 송수신하며 사람이 일일이 접근하기 힘든 방대한 지역의 센서 데이터를 획득 및 전송한다. 하지만 센서 노드들의 중복 센서 데이터의 비효율적인 반복 전송은 전체 시스템의 수명을 짧게 하고, 이때 발생하는 많은 양의 데이터들은 사용할 때 다시 선별해야 하는 번거로움이 있다. 본 논문에서는 네이밍 에이전트의 네임 스페이스의 메타 테이블로부터 제공되는 이주 대상 노드들을 차례로 방문하여, 사용자 조건에 따라 중복 센서 데이터를 제거하고, 용도 및 필요에 따라 센서 데이터를 수집 및 전송함으로써 센서 데이터의 과잉 송수신을 막고 전체 시스템의 수명을 늘릴 수 있는 이동 에이전트 미들웨어를 설계 및 구현한다. 또한, 실제 환경에서 발생할 수 있는 상황을 고려한 조건 및 제한들을 적용한 이동 에이전트를 이용한 실험을 통하여 중복 센서 데이터의 제거 및 데이터 수집의 효율성을 보이고, 향후 제안된 이동 에이전트 미들웨어에 능동 규칙을 탑재하거나 능동 규칙 시스템과의 연계를 통하여 다양한 능동적 센서 네트워크 응용에의 적용 가능성을 보인다.

Development, Validation, and Application of a Portable SPR Biosensor for the Direct Detection of Insecticide Residues

  • This study was carried out to develop a small-sized biosensor based on surface plasmon resonance (SPR) for the rapid identification of insecticide residues for food safety. The SPR biosensor module consists of a single 770 nm-light emitting diodes (LED) light source, several optical lenses for transferring light, a hemisphere sensor chip, photo detector, A/D converter, power source, and software for signal processing using a computer. Except for the computer, the size and weight of the sensor module are 150 (L)$\times$70 (W)$\times$120 (H) mm and 828 g, respectively. Validation and application procedures were designed to assess refractive index analysis, affinity properties, sensitivity, linearity, limits of detection, and robustness which includes an analysis of baseline stability and reproducibility of ligand immobilization using carbamate (carbofuran and carbaryl) and organophosphate (cadusafos, ethoprofos, and chlorpyrifos) insecticide residues. With direct binding analysis, insecticide residues were detected at less than the minimum 0.01 ppm and analyzed in less than 100 sec with a good linear relationship. Based on these results, we find that the binding interaction with active target groups in enzymes using the miniaturized SPR biosensor could detect low concentrations which satisfy the maximum residue limits for pesticide tolerance in Korea, Japan, and the USA.

Hand Gesture Recognition Using an Infrared Proximity Sensor Array

  • Hand gesture is the most common tool used to interact with and control various electronic devices. In this paper, we propose a novel hand gesture recognition method using fuzzy logic based classification with a new type of sensor array. In some cases, feature patterns of hand gesture signals cannot be uniquely distinguished and recognized when people perform the same gesture in different ways. Moreover, differences in the hand shape and skeletal articulation of the arm influence to the process. Manifold features were extracted, and efficient features, which make gestures distinguishable, were selected. However, there exist similar feature patterns across different hand gestures, and fuzzy logic is applied to classify them. Fuzzy rules are defined based on the many feature patterns of the input signal. An adaptive neural fuzzy inference system was used to generate fuzzy rules automatically for classifying hand gestures using low number of feature patterns as input. In addition, emotion expression was conducted after the hand gesture recognition for resultant human-robot interaction. Our proposed method was tested with many hand gesture datasets and validated with different evaluation metrics. Experimental results show that our method detects more hand gestures as compared to the other existing methods with robust hand gesture recognition and corresponding emotion expressions, in real time.

상호작용 기반의 홀로그램 실감 콘텐츠 서비스연구 (Realistic Contents and Interaction Based Realistic Contents Service)

  • 최근 실감 콘텐츠는 디스플레이 기술의 발달에 따라 다양한 방식으로 적용되고 있으며 높아지는 대중의 요구에 따라 최종적 실감 콘텐츠 기술인 홀로그램이 제한적으로 사용되고 있다. 그러나 대부분의 실감 콘텐츠에는 HMD(head mounted device) 또는 안경 형태의 디바이스가 요구되며 기타의 실감 콘텐츠 디스플레이 기술은 체험 공간에서의 단일 이미지 평면을 사용자에게 전달하므로 단조로운 콘텐츠 체험을 제공한다. 이에 본 논문에서는 다양한 실감 콘텐츠 기술과 홀로그램 기술이 적용된 실감 콘텐츠를 정리하고, 프로젝션 맵핑과 플로팅 홀로그램을 융합한 상호작용 기반의 체험형 실감 콘텐츠 서비스를 제안한다. 프로젝션 맵핑되는 스크린과 다중 플로팅 홀로그램 생성 장치를 통해 사용자 시점에서의 깊이 방향이 확장된 3차원 입체 공간을 제공함과 동시에 사용자의 신체 전체와 부분적 모션을 다수의 센서를 통해 인식가능하게 하여 기존 대비 사용자의 활동 영역이 확장된 상호작용 콘텐츠 서비스가 실현이 가능하도록 설계하였다.

Study on Gesture and Voice-based Interaction in Perspective of a Presentation Support Tool

  • Objective: This study aims to implement a non-contact gesture-based interface for presentation purposes and to analyze the effect of the proposed interface as information transfer assisted device. Background: Recently, research on control device using gesture recognition or speech recognition is being conducted with rapid technological growth in UI/UX area and appearance of smart service products which requires a new human-machine interface. However, few quantitative researches on practical effects of the new interface type have been done relatively, while activities on system implementation are very popular. Method: The system presented in this study is implemented with KINECT$^{(R)}$ sensor offered by Microsoft Corporation. To investigate whether the proposed system is effective as a presentation support tool or not, we conduct experiments by giving several lectures to 40 participants in both a traditional lecture room(keyboard-based presentation control) and a non-contact gesture-based lecture room(KINECT-based presentation control), evaluating their interests and immersion based on contents of the lecture and lecturing methods, and analyzing their understanding about contents of the lecture. Result: We check that whether the gesture-based presentation system can play effective role as presentation supporting tools or not depending on the level of difficulty of contents using ANOVA. Conclusion: We check that a non-contact gesture-based interface is a meaningful tool as a sportive device when delivering easy and simple information. However, the effect can vary with the contents and the level of difficulty of information provided. Application: The results presented in this paper might help to design a new human-machine(computer) interface for communication support tools.

AR 전신 상호작용을 위한 이종 센서 간 좌표계 보정 기법 (Heterogeneous Sensor Coordinate System Calibration Technique for AR Whole Body Interaction)

  • 꾸준히 증가하는 노인성 질환 환자 대상으로 몰입형 디지털 콘텐츠를 이용한 쉽고 정확한 전신 재활 상호작용 기술이 필요하며, 본 연구에서는 이를 위해 홀로렌즈와 키넥트를 사용한 전신 상호작용 기술을 소개한다. 이를 위해 메쉬 특징점 기반 변환, AR 마커 기반 변환, 신체 인식 기반 변환 방법의 3가지 좌표 변환 방식을 제안한다. 메쉬 특징점 기반 변환은 공간 메쉬에 3개의 특징점을 지정하고 변환 행렬을 이용하여 좌표계를 일치시킨다. 이 방법은 수작업이 필요하여 사용성이 떨어지지만 정확도가 8.5mm로 상대적으로 높다. AR 마커 기반 방식은 홀로렌즈s와 키넥트가 동시에 인식하는 AR, QR마커를 사용하여 평균오차 11.2mm로 준수한 정확도를 달성했다. 신체 인식 기반 변환 방법은 두 기기가 동시에 인식하는 머리 혹은 HMD위치와 양 손 혹은 컨트롤러 위치를 이용하여 좌표계를 일치시킨다. 이 방법은 정확도가 떨어지지만 부가적인 도구나 수작업이 필요 없으므로 사용성이 좋다. 또한 후처리 기술로 RANSAC을 적용함으로써 오차를 10% 이상 줄였다. 이러한 3가지 방식은 콘텐츠가 필요한 사용 편의성과 정확도에 따라서 선택적으로 적용할 수 있다. 본 연구에서는 이 기술을 이용해서 '썬더펀치'와 재활 치료 콘텐츠에 적용하여 검증하였다.

Reduced Graphene Oxide Field Effect Transistor for Detection of H+ Ions and Their Bio-sensing Application

  • Recently, graphene based solution-gated field-effect transistors (SGFETs) have been received a great attention in biochemical sensing applications. Graphene and reduced graphene oxide (RGO) possess various advantages such as high sensitivity, low detection limit, label-free electrical detection, and ease of fabrication due to their 2D nature and large sensing area compared to 1D nanomaterials- based nanobiosensors. Therefore, graphene or RGO -based SGFET is a good potential candidate for sensitive detection of protons (H+ ions) which can be applied as the transducer in various enzymatic or cell-based biosensing applications. However, reports on detection of H+ ions using graphene or RGO based SGFETs have been still limited. According to recent reports, clean graphene grown by CVD or exfoliation is electrochemically insensitive to changes of H+ concentration in solution because its surface does not have terminal functional groups that can sense the chemical potential change induced by varying surface charges of H+ on CVD graphene surface. In this work, we used RGO -SGFETs having oxygen-containing functional groups such as hydroxyl (OH) groups that effectively interact with H+ ions for expectation of increasing pH sensitivity. Additionally, we also investigate RGO based SGFETs for bio-sensing applications. Hydroloytic enzymes were introduced for sensing of biomolecular interaction on the surface of RGO -SGFET in which enzyme and substrate are acetylcholinesterase (AchE) and acetylcholine (Ach), respectively. The increase in H+ generated through enzymatic reaction of hydrolysis of Ach by AchE immobilized on RGO channel in SGFET could be monitored by the change in the drain-source current (Ids).
