  • This paper describes the optimal design of a multi-layered surface plasmon resonance sensors to meet various specifications and improve some physical parameters. Dip 3 dB bandwidth and depth were chosen as design parameters and the objective function was the norm of the difference between design parameters and target values. The design variables are thicknesses of each layer and to obtain the design parameters, the optical admittance method was employed. The (1+1) evolution strategy was employed as an optimization tool. By applying the proposed optimization procedure to a 3-layered sensor, the optimized design variables considerably improved the 3 dB bandwidth by 4.8 nm and the dip depth by 1.1 dB.

  • The capacitive sensor has a simple structure, compact size and low cost, but a small dynamic range. The small range is caused by use of gap variation. If the sensor takes area variation type with one plate moving horizontally, it can have a large measurable range. While the area variation has relatively low sensitivity, some studies have found methods to improve the sensitivity. Even though the methods are effective, parameters of the results are limited and 2 dimensional. This study provides more practical and 3 dimensional analysis and suggests relations between parameters. Using the results, the optimized design parameters of a high dynamic range capacitive sensor can be found.

  • This paper discusses numerically and experimenally several design parameters for the plate- type capacitive displacement sensor. The influenences of shape of this sensor on the sensitivity are numerically analyzed with the charge density method. Using many test sensor plates of different shape for verifing the validity of this method can not guarantee the repetibility of experiments. Therefore we made specially the test sensor plate so that experiments of effects of shape of this sensor on sensitivity can be done with only that plate. Results from these experiments agree well with those from numerical analysis.

  • Many pilot projects are developed using USN(Ubiquitous Sensor network). Recently USN has more attention to be used for the applications of circumstance monitoring. In order to acquire information from sensor nodes, sensor nodes need a RF transceiver. In this paper we describe the design of a RF transceiver, based on IEEE 802.15.4, for sensor nodes operating in 2.4GHz frequency band. The architecture to be implemented and the electrical performance specifications satisfied IEEE 802.15.4 are presented. The noise figure of a receiver, selectivity, phase noise of a frequency synthesizer, transmitter's linearity and spectrum mask are derived as a design parameters from the specifications of IEEE 802.15.4.

  • A pressure wave created by the photoacoustic effect is affected by the medium and by laser parameters. The effect of these parameters on the generated pressure wave can be seen by solving the photoacoustic wave equation. These solutions which are examined in the time domain and the frequency domain should be considered by researchers in acoustic sensor design. In particular, frequency domain analysis contains significant information for designing the sensor. The most important part of this information is the determination of the operating frequency of the sensor. In this work, the laser parameters to excite the medium, and the acoustic signal parameters created by the medium are analyzed. For the first time, we have obtained solutions for situations which have no frequency domain solutions in the literature. The main focal point in this work is that the frequency domain solutions of the acoustic wave equation are performed and the effects of the frequency analysis of the related parameters are shown comparatively from the viewpoint of using them in acoustic sensor designs.

  • This paper discussed design for resonance avoidance of sensor plates of loose-parts monitoring systems (LPMS) in nuclear power plants (NPP). An LPMS monitors impact of loose parts in primary loop of NPP by using accelerometers, which is mounted on sensor plates. Resonance of the plates may cause false alarms at frequencies over 10 kHz, which can be misunderstood as impact signals of loose parts with small mass and cause unnecessary response of NPP operators. Modal analysis was carried out for the existing sensor plate and design parameters affecting natural frequencies were chosen. Frequency response functions of plates were analyzed by changing the parameters and the optimized plate design for avoiding resonance was determined. Experiments was carried out for the plate specimen with improved design and verified the proposed approach and design.

  • The design parameters of transmitter and receiver channel systems for COMS, which provides meteorological and ocean data services, were analyzed and the channel design parameters for a proper design of a small user-terminal were proposed in this paper. The COMS transmits the oceanic observation data by using the S/L-band link to the earth station. The meteorological data also are transmitted to the earth station, the meteorological data services, which are processed in the earth station, are provided to user. The sensor data are transmitted as digital signal type and are received by bilateral small-sized user terminals. So the optimal channel system for transmission and reception of sensor data should be designed on the basis of the channel modeling and analyzed results for primary technologies.

  • Recent advancement in wireless communications and electronics has enabled the development of low power sensor network. Wireless sensor network are often used in remote monitoring control applications, health care, security and environmental monitoring. Wireless sensor networks are an emerging technology consisting of small, low-power, and low-cost devices that integrate limited computation, sensing, and radio communication capabilities. Sensor network platform for health care has been designed, fabricated and tested. This system consists of an embedded micro-controller, Radio Frequency (RF) transceiver, power management, I/O expansion, and serial communication (RS-232). The hardware platform uses Atmel ATmega128L 8-bit ultra low power RISC processor with 128KB flash memory as the program memory and 4KB SRAM as the data memory. The radio transceiver (Chipcon CC1000) operates in the ISM band at 433MHz or 916MHz with a maximum data rate of 76.8kbps. Also, the indoor radio range is approximately 20-30m. When many sensors have to communicate with the controller, standard communication interfaces such as Serial Peripheral Interface (SPI) or Integrated Circuit ($I^{2}C$) allow sharing a single communication bus. With its low power, the smallest and low cost design, the wireless sensor network system and wireless sensing electronics to collect health-related information of human vitality and main physiological parameters (ECG, Temperature, Perspiration, Blood Pressure and some more vitality parameters, etc.)

  • Modal parameters are widely used in bridge damage detection, finite element model (FEM) updating and design optimization. However, the conventional modal identification approaches require large number of sensors, enormous data processing workload, but normally result in mode shapes with low accuracy. This paper proposes a modal identification method of time-varying vehicle-bridge system using a single sensor. Firstly, the essential physical relationship between the instantaneous frequency of the vehicle-bridge system and the bridge mode shapes are derived. Subsequently, based on the synchroextracting transform, the instantaneous frequency of the system is tracked through the dynamic response collected by a single sensor, and further the modal parameters are estimated by using the derived physical relationship. Then numerical and experimental examples are conducted to examine the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed method. Finally, the modal parameters identified by the proposed method are applied in bridge FEM updating. The results manifest that the proposed method identifies the modal parameters with high accuracy via a single sensor, and can provide reliable data for the FEM updating.
