In this paper, we describes the information-theoretic approaches to sensor selection and sensor placement in sensor networks for target localization and tracking. We have developed a sensor selection heuristic to activate the most informative candidate sensor for collaborative target localization and tracking. The fusion of the observation by the selected sensor with the prior target location distribution yields nearly the greatest reduction of the entropy of the expected posterior target location distribution. Our sensor selection heuristic is computationally less complex and thus more suitable to sensor networks with moderate computing power than the mutual information sensor selection criteria. We have also developed a method to compute the posterior target location distribution with the minimum entropy that could be achieved by the fusion of observations of the sensor network with a given deployment geometry. We have found that the covariance matrix of the posterior target location distribution with the minimum entropy is consistent with the Cramer-Rao lower bound (CRB) of the target location estimate. Using the minimum entropy of the posterior target location distribution, we have characterized the effect of the sensor placement geometry on the localization accuracy.
This paper describes the design and fabrication of a two-axis force/torque sensor and an one-axis force sensor with parallel plate beams(PPSs) for measuring forces and torque in an ankle rehabilitation exercise using by a lower rehabilitation robot. The two-axis force/torque sensor is composed of a Fy force sensor and Tz torque sensor and the force sensor detects x direction force. The two-axis force/torque sensor and one-axis force sensor were designed using by FEM(Finite Element Method), and manufactured using strain-gages. The characteristics experiment of the two-axis force/torque sensor and one-axis force sensor were carried out respectively. As a test results, the interference error of the two-axis force/torque sensor was less than 1.56%, the repeatability error and the non-linearity of the two-axis force/torque sensor were less than 0.03% respectively, and the repeatability error and the non-linearity of the one-axis force sensor were less than 0.03% and 0.02% respectively.
Tilt sensor is required to control the attitude of the biped robot when it walks on an uneven terrain. Vision sensor, which is used for recognizing human or detecting obstacles, can be used as a tilt angle sensor by comparing current image and reference image. However, vision sensor alone has a lot of technological limitations to control biped robot such as low sampling frequency and estimation time delay. In order to verify limitations of vision sensor, experimental setup of an inverted pendulum, which represents pitch motion of the walking or running robot, is used and it is proved that only vision sensor cannot control an inverted pendulum mainly because of the time delay. In this paper, to overcome limitations of vision sensor, Kalman filter for the multi-rate sensor fusion algorithm is applied with low-quality gyro sensor. It solves limitations of the vision sensor as well as eliminates drift of gyro sensor. Through the experiment of an inverted pendulum control, it is found that the tilt estimation performance of fusion sensor is greatly improved enough to control the attitude of an inverted pendulum.
In wireless sensor networks (WSNs) duty cycling has been an imperative choice to reduce idle listening but it introduces sleep delay. Thus, the conventional WSN medium access control protocols are bound by the energy-latency tradeoff. To break through the tradeoff, we propose a radio wave sensor called radio frequency (RF) wakeup sensor that is dedicated to sense the presence of a RF signal. The distinctive feature of our design is that the RF wakeup sensor can provide the same sensitivity but with two orders of magnitude less energy than the underlying RF module. With RF wakeup sensor a sensor node no longer requires duty cycling. Instead, it can maintain a sleep state until its RF wakeup sensor detects a communication signal. According to our analysis, the response time of the RF wakeup sensor is much shorter than the minimum transmission time of a typical communication module. Therefore, we apply duty cycling to the RF wakeup sensor to further reduce the energy consumption without performance degradation. We evaluate the circuital characteristics of our RF wakeup sensor design by using Advanced Design System 2009 simulator. The results show that RF wakeup sensor allows a sensor node to completely turn off their communication module by performing the around-the-clock carrier sensing while it consumes only 0.07% energy of an idle communication module.

An integrated pressure-sensor system was developed using the sensor-conditioning processes, which resulted in the optimum sensitivity of the pressure-sensor through the signal amplification, noise reduction, and level shift. Due to the specified characteristics among the components, such as operation range, the sensor output was generally limited compared to the full scale of the reading when coupled with other parts. Devices fabricated exhibited comparable characteristics with higher pressure sensitivity to that of the pressure sensor without sensor-conditioning process. In this work, the sensor resolution was at least enhanced at least by 25% using the sensor-conditioning processes.
This paper introduces a multi-purpose smart fusion sensor. Normally, this type of sensor can contribute to energy savings specifically related to lighting and heating/air conditioning systems by detecting individuals in an office building. If a fire occurs, the sensor can provide information regarding the presence and location of residents in the building to a management center. The system consists of four sensors: a thermopile sensor for detecting heat energy, an ultrasonic sensor for measuring the distance of objects from the sensor, a fire detection sensor, and a passive infrared sensor for detecting temperature change. The system has a wireless communication module to provide the management center with control information for lighting and heating/air conditioning systems. We have also demonstrated the usefulness of the proposed system by applying it to a real environment.
Low power consumption sensor network platform (sensor node) for sensor networking with IEEE 802.15.4 protocol was fabricated. The sensor node used ceramic bar type antenna for increasing RF signal performance and decreasing PCB size occupied by antenna. The communication range of the fabricated sensor node was about $20{\sim}30$ m in open environment with 915 MHz frequency bandwidth and well supported by Tiny OS. The sensor node have good connectivity with various external devices by RS-232, I2C, analogue and digital expansion board, hence, this sensor node can be applied to various applications in wireless sensor network and ubiquitous sensor network.
This paper shows the development of flexible force sensor using the fiber Bragg grating. This force sensor consists of a Bragg grating fiber and flexible silicone rubber (DC184, Dow corning co. Ltd). This sensor does not have special structure to maximize the deflection or elongation, but have good sensitivity and very flexible characteristics. In addition, this sensor has the immunity to the electro magnetic field and can be multiplexed easily, which is inherited from the characteristics of fiber Bragg grating sensor. In the future, this sensor can be utilized the tactile sensor system minimizing the sensor size and developing the fabrication method.
This paper describes the development of 6-axis force/moment sensor considered adult weight far an intelligent foot of humanoid robot. In order to walk on uneven terrain safely, the foot should perceive the applied forces Fx, Fy, Fz and moments Mx, My, Mz to itself and control the foot using the forces and moments. The applied forces and moments should be measured from a 6-axis force/moment sensor attached to the foot, which is composed of Fx sensor, Fy sensor, Fz sensor, Mx sensor, My sensor and Mz sensor in a body. Each sensor should get the deferent rated load, because the applied forces and moments to foot in walking are deferent. Therefore, one of the important things in the sensor is to design each sensor with the deferent rated load and the same rated output. In this paper, a 6-axis force/moment sensor (rated load of Fx and Fy are 500Nm and Fz sensor is 1000N, and those of Mx and My are 18Nm, Mz sensor is 8Nm) for perceiving forces and moments in a humanoid robot's foot was developed using many PPBs (parallel plate-beams). The structure of the sensor was newly modeled, and the sensing elements (plate-beams) of the sensor were designed using by ANSYS software (FEM (Finite Element Method) program). Then, a 6-axis force/moment sensor was fabricated by attaching strain-gages on the sensing elements, and the characteristic test of the developed sensor was carried out. The rated outputs from FEM analysis agree well with that from the characteristic test.
Sensor node means a device to include sensor, amplifier, and data acquisition (DAQ) equipment. The sensor converts physical signals to electric signals and weak signals from the sensor can be amplified through the amplifier. DAQ equipment converts analog signal to digital signal and collects converted digital signal. Since the sensor node is sensitive to the environment so that selection of mounting position and fixture design of sensor are applied differently depending on the characteristics of a target. This study is about designing and manufacturing sensor node to be used in a machine tool. The environment of machine tool is very severe due to noise, temperature fluctuation, and dust, etc. Hence, the sensor and amplifier must be designed and manufactured by considering the environmental issues. The designed and manufactured sensor node was tested for the reliability and effectiveness of the developed sensor nodes in the study.
