  • Robust design method developed by Genichi Taguchi has been very popular since the 1980s and there have been many academic and applied research works on this topic. However, college students and engineers in companies have had difficulty in understanding the method. This paper presents a procedure to implement the robust design method by an easy-to-execute paper helicopter experiment. A crossed array was adopted, which consists of a resolution IV fractional factorial design with 6 control factors and a factorial design with 3 noise factors. Three performance measures were analyzed; signal-to-noise ratio, mean, and standard deviation of the falling time of the paper helicopter that is to be maximized. Control-noise interaction plots are also given to evaluate the degree of the sensitivity of each level of the control factors to the noise factors. The procedure presented in this paper can be helpful to those who want to have basic knowledge in the robust design method.

  • The present paper shows the results of numerical and experimental modal analyses of Francis runners, which were executed in air and in still water. In its first part this paper is focused on the numerical prediction of the model parameters by means of FEM and the validation of the FEM method. Influences of different geometries on modal parameters and frequency reduction ratio (FRR), which is the ratio of the natural frequencies in water and the corresponding natural frequencies in air, are investigated for two different runners, one prototype and one model runner. The results of the analyses indicate very good agreement between experiment and simulation. Particularly the frequency reduction ratios derived from simulation are found to agree very well with the values derived from experiment. In order to identify sensitivity of the structural properties several parameters such as material properties, different model scale and different hub geometries are numerically investigated. In its second part, a harmonic response analysis is shown for a Francis runner by applying the time dependent pressure distribution resulting from an unsteady CFD simulation to the mechanical structure. Thus, the data gained by modern CFD simulation are being fully utilized for the structural design based on life time analysis. With this new approach a more precise prediction of turbine loading and its effect on turbine life cycle is possible allowing better turbine designs to be developed.

  • Highly positive correlations were obtained between the growth duration of the 1978 IReTN entries in Chuncheon, Korea and all the experimental sites in 7 other countries. Among the entries the photoperiod responsive varieties had very long growth duration in Chuncheon although relatively early in flowering in the other low latitude sites. Selection under Korean conditions would eliminate the short growth duration varieties caused by photoperiod sensitivity in tropics or sub tropics. Except for photoperiod sensitive rices, selection of varieties or lines for optimum growth duration before further evaluation in other low temperature areas would be most effective in Chuncheon, Korea.

  • This paper represents the development of 3-axises loadcell for measuring the side-force of suspension module of MPV(Multi Purposed Vehicle). The side force causes the failure of damper, such as leakage. The loadcell was developed using strain gauges, and the Wheastone bridge circuit to compensate for the cross-talk between the each axises and the measurement error by temperature. Structure analysis of loadcell was accomplished with FEM(Finite Element Method) to optimize the location of strain gages. The design optimization for important factors that have an effect on performance of loadcell was accomplished by using DOE(Design of Experiment). Loadcell was produced and successfully tested, showing good sensitivity and low cross-talk. The cross-talk of the developed loadcell is bellow 5%. The load history was measured at proving ground. The maximum side-force, the longitudinal force, and vertical force of MPV are 4.2 kN, 8.0 kN, and 17.0 kN, respectively, at Belgian road.

  • Minimun-detectable levels to 28 antibacterial agents used for the prevention and the treatment of fish diseases were determined to establish optimal detective method of bioassay in fish by the EEC 4-plate method, the modified method of EEC 4-plate and the standard method of analysis in food safety regulation. The test organisms used in the methods of bioassay were as follows: Bacillus subtilis BGA (B. subtilis) and Micrococcus luteus ATCC 9341 (M. luteus) in the EEC 4-plate method, B. subtilis, M. luteus and Bacillus cereus var. mycoides ATCC 11778 (B. cereus) in the modified of EEC 4-plate, and B. subtilis, M. luteus, B. cereus and Bacillus stearothermophilis var. calidolactis C-953 (B. stearothermophilis) in the standard method. The standard method showed predominant sensitivity in the detection of penicillins (PCs), and was also highly sensitive to aminoglycosides (AGs). The sensitivity of standard method in the detection of tetracyclines (TCs), marrolides (MLs), nitrofuran derivatives(NFs) and quinolones (QNs) was very low, and against sulfonamides (SAs), however, was extremely low. The modified method of EEC 4-plate showed very high sensitivity to TCs. Both the EEC 4-plate and the modified method of EEC 4-plate showed competitively high sensitivity in the detection of PCs, MLs, NFs, QNs and SAs. All the methods studied in the experiment showed very low sensitivity against chloramphenicol (CMs). Consequently, the modified method of EEC 4-Plate was the best bioassay method with a wide range of sensitivity for the optimal detection of the residual antibacterial agents in fish.

  • A glucose clamp technique was used to compare dietary starch (ST), starch plus sucrose (ST+SU) and sucrose (SU) with regard to the effect on tissue responsiveness and sensitivity to insulin in intact adult male goats. The goats were fed diets containing 1.2 times of ME and CP for maintenance requirements twice daily for 21 d. Of the energy intake, 30% was offered with ST, ST+SU or SU for the respective diets, and 70% as alfalfa hay, ground corn and ground soybean meal at the respective weight ratio of 1, 1, and 0.3 for all diets. Tissue responsiveness and sensitivity to insulin were evaluated using a hyperinsulinemic euglycemic clamp technique with four levels of insulin infusion beyond 13 h after feeding. The concentrations of plasma metabolites and insulin were also determined at 3, 6 and 13 h after feeding to evaluate the effects of different carbohydrates on metabolic states in the body. Plasma glucose concentration was higher (p = 0.01) for SU diet than for ST and ST+SU diets. Increasing SU intake decreased (p<0.01) plasma acetate concentration across the time. At 3 h but not 6 and 13 h after feeding, high lactate (p = 0.01), and non-significant high propionate (p = 0.14) and low urea nitrogen (p = 0.19) concentrations were observed in plasma on SU compared with ST and ST+SU diets. Plasma insulin concentration was not different (p = 0.44) between ST and SU fed animals. In the glucose clamp experiment, considering the effects on the maximal glucose infusion rate (tissue responsiveness to insulin, p = 0.54) and the plasma insulin concentration at half-maximal glucose infusion rate (insulin sensitivity, p = 0.54), SU was not different from ST. It is concluded that SU may not be greatly different from ST with regard to the effect on tissue responsiveness and sensitivity to insulin in adult goats when fed twice daily as part of a high-concentrate diet. The possible greater effects of SU on plasma metabolites concentrations at 3 h than at 6 and 13 h after feeding suggest that a lack of persistency of SU effects during the postfeeding period may be associated with the poor response to SU in insulin action.

  • This study examined the effect of face sensitivities on a consumer's choice of luxury product's logo size. To answer the research question, an experimental design was planed and conducted where the stimulus for the experiment comprised two luxury brands, Louisvuitton and Couronne. For each brand, three different sizes of a logo were considered; no logo, logo with small size, and logo with big size. Each product has an identical design, color, and size except for the size of logos. A total of 115 students were enrolled in the experiment to select one of the logo sizes in each brand. Through the data analysis, we found that shame consciousness and consciousness for others among face sensitivities were significantly associated with the choice of a logo size both in Louisvuitton and Couronne. In addition, there was no significant difference in face sensitivities between male and female, but was significant difference in the choice of a logo size between male and female.

  • The Precipitable Water Vapor (PWV) from GPS with high resolution in terms of time and space might reduce the limitations of the numerical weather prediction (NWP) model for easily variable phenomena, such as precipitation and cloud. We have converted to PWV from Global Positioning System (GPS) data of Korea Astronomy and Space Science Institute (KASI) and Ministry of Maritime Affairs & Fisheries (MOMAF). First of all, we have selected the heavy rainfall case of having a predictability limitation in time and space due to small-scale motion. In order to evaluate the effect for GPS PWV, we have executed the sensitivity experiment with PWV from GPS data over Korean peninsula in the Weather Research & Forecasting 3-Dimensional Variational (WRF-3DVAR). We have also suggested the direction of further research for an improvement of the predictability of NWP model on the basis of this case.
