  • This Electromagnetic metal piece detection sensor, having high sensitivity even under high humidity and dust density, using LVDT was investigated. Metal detection characteristics using phase detection method, for 3 frequencies covering ELF and LF band, were experimentally measured. It was found that the sensitivity for metal and animal food, in which metal piece was included, was exponentially increased as frequency increased. Reducing cutoff frequency of LPF after PD was found to be effective to proportionally increase sensitivity. Also the sensitivity of metal piece detection was enhanced by optimizing BPF bandwidth and SNR. Metal piece detection limit using available ferrous test samples was found to be 0.7mm diameter from the experiment using 50kHz, in ELF band, which was known to have better selectivity to animal food. is an example of ABSTRACT format.

  • The characteristics of the dual-Doppler wind retrieval method based on a three dimensional variational (3DVAR) conception were investigated from the following four points of view; the sensitivity of the number of iteration, the effect of the weak constraint term, the effect of the smoothness term, and the sensitivity of the error mixing ratio of the radial velocities. In the experiment, the radial velocities relative to the Gosan and Jindo radar sites of the Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) were calculated from the forecasting of the WRF (Weather Research and Forecast; Skamarock, 2004) model at 1330 UTC 30 June 2006, which is the one and half hour forecast from the initial time, 1200 UTC on that day. The results showed that the retrieval performance of the horizontal wind field was robust, but that of the vertical wind was sensitive to the external conditions, such as iteration number and the on/off of the weak constraint term. The sensitivity of error mixing ratio was so large that even the horizontal wind retrieval efficiency was reduced a lot. But the sensitivity of the smooth term was not so large. When we applied this method to the real mesoscale convective system (MCS) between the Gosan and Jindo radar pair at 1430 UTC 30 June 2006, the wind structure of the convective cells in the MCS was consistently retrieved relative to the reflectivity factor structure. By comparing the vertical wind structure of this case with that of 10 minutes after, 1440 UTC 30 June 2006, we got the physical consistency of our method.

  • An Excavation Damaged Zone (EDZ), in which rock properties are permanently changed due to blasting impact or stress redistribution, can influence the behavior and stability of structures. In this study, the mechanical stability of an underground opening was simulated by using FLAC, which is a two-dimensional modeling code, with a consideration of EDZ. A sensitivity analysis was also carried out with fractional factorial design. From the modeling, it was found that the behavior and the stability of an underground tunnel are strongly dependent on the existence of the EDZ. The sensitivity analysis showed that the key parameters affecting the factor of safety around the tunnel are in-situ stress ratio, depth, cohesion, reduction ratio, internal friction angle, and height and width of the tunnel. It is necessary to consider the EDZ, which can significantly affect mechanical stability in tunnel design.

  • This paper attempted to suggest the standards of light transmittance based on the analysis of the changes in contrast sensitivity of photopic condition according to the light transmittance of tinted lenses. The subjects of the experiment were 24 male and 13 female adults with normal ocular functions. They were asked to wear four tinted lenses (gray, brown, red, and green) in turn. The light transmittance of the lenses were 80~90%, 60~80%, 43~60%, and 30~43%, respectively. Contrast sensitivities were measured by using F.A.C.T. chart. The results showed that contrast sensitivities were decreased in proportion to the decrease of the light transmittance, and visual sensitivity of brown lenses were the highest and that of red lenses were the lowest. The results of the experiments suggested that the light transmittance should be over 38% for brown, gray and green lenses, and over 52% for red lenses. Accordingly the appropriate light transmittance should be considered when tinted lenses are selected for the purpose of eye protection in everyday life.

  • In this paper, the design method for a high-sensitivity compact resonator for chipless RFID tags is proposed. Proposed high-sensitivity compact resonator uses an interdigital-capacitor structure instead of a capacitor-shaped strip structure in a conventional ELC resonator. The length of the electrode plate of the IDC structure is longer than that of the conventional capacitor-shaped structure, resulting in a larger equivalent capacitance of the resonator. This can lower the resonant peak frequency of the RCS characteristic. Two resonators with the same length of the square loop and the width of the strip are fabricated on an RF-301 substrate with a thickness of 0.8 mm. The experiment results show that the resonant peak frequency and value of the bistatic RCS for the ELC resonator were 4.305 GHz and -30.39 dBsm, whereas those of the proposed IDC resonator were 3.295 GHz and -36.91 dBsm. Therefore, the size of the resonator is reduced by 23.5% based on the measured resonant peak frequency of the RCS characteristic.

  • We aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of ensemble optimal interpolation (EnOI) in improving the analysis of significant wave height (SWH) within wave models using satellite-derived SWH data. Satellite observations revealed higher SWH in mid-latitude regions (30° to 60° in both hemispheres) due to stronger winds, whereas equatorial and coastal areas exhibited lower wave heights, attributed to calmer winds and land interactions. Root mean square error (RMSE) analysis of the control experiment without data assimilation revealed significant discrepancies in high-latitude areas, underscoring the need for enhanced analysis techniques. Data assimilation experiments demonstrated substantial RMSE reductions, particularly in high-latitude regions, underscoring the effectiveness of the technique in enhancing the quality of analysis fields. Sensitivity experiments with varying ensemble sizes showed modest global improvements in analysis fields with larger ensembles. Sensitivity experiments based on different decorrelation length scales demonstrated significant RMSE improvements at larger scales, particularly in the Southern Ocean and Northwest Pacific. However, some areas exhibited slight RMSE increases, suggesting the need for region-specific tuning of assimilation parameters. Reducing the observation error covariance improved analysis quality in certain regions, including the equator, but generally degraded it in others. Rescaling background error covariance (BEC) resulted in overall improvements in analysis fields, though sensitivity to regional variability persisted. These findings underscore the importance of data assimilation, parameter tuning, and BEC rescaling in enhancing the quality and reliability of wave analysis fields, emphasizing the necessity of region-specific adjustments to optimize assimilation performance. These insights are valuable for understanding ocean dynamics, improving navigation, and supporting coastal management practices.

  • A magnetic levitation system with hybrid magnets, which is composed of permanent magnets and electromagnets, consumes less power than the conventional attraction type system. A parallel complementary controller on the lift controller is proposed to reduce the sensitivity for parameter variation and force disturbance. Simulation and experiment show that the lift system has robustness to force disturbance.

  • Recently, the photopolymer made of novolak resin as the base and the naphthoquinonediazide(NQD) as the photoreactive compound is used for the presensitized plate(PS plate). The reaction mechanism of the NQD-novolak resin on light exposure is considered. Upon exposure it undergoes a Wolff rearrangement, via ketene intermediate which react with water ti form an 3-indene carboxylic acid. It was also found that NQD type resin in this experiment shows a high relative sensitivity compared with imported sample from Japan.
