  • The purpose of this paper is to provide a multi-modular account of double accusative constructions in Korean in the framework of Autolexical Grammar. The grammar views syntactic, semantic, and morphological structures of sentences as modules which are generated simultaneously and independently. Unlike syntactocentric theories, this paper analyzes semantic characteristics of double accusatives through function-argument (F/A) structure along with roles structure (RS) and information structure (IS). In F/A structure of double accusatives, the first accusative becomes an argument of a predicate, unlike the possessive, which is an argument of a relational noun. Furthermore, the first accusative of double accusatives takes the role of patient in RS, which allows it to become the subject of a passive sentence. On the other hand, the second accusative, which is originally the possessee, becomes a focal area in IS. Therefore, the purpose of double accusatives is twofold: one is to turn the possessor into an independent argument of a predicate which takes patient role, and the other is to turn the possessee into a focus. Such semantic characteristics of double accusatives can be expressed by means of multi-dimensional structures of F/A structure, RS, and IS of Autolexical Grammar, which allows an integrated account of the phenomenon.

  • To suggest a more efficient way of delivering information for process control under computerized environment, population stereotypes of colors were tested with 57 Korean subjects. The subjects were asked to associate 11 colors salient at electronic video displays with 55 pairs of adjectives that might be used when they explain the current state of process. The levels of association were evaluated with semantic differential methods by 7 point scales. Based on the multivariate analyses, the 55 pairs of adjectives were grouped into three distinct dimensions. The emotional maps of the 11 colors with respect to each dimension were presented. The Quantitative relationships between the colors and subjective impressions were also calculated by quantification theory I. On the basis of these color associations, it was suggested a general guideline for color coding when delivering process information

  • The 121 five-year-old Korean subjects of this study were divided in 3 groups based on their experience in learning a foreign language (English). A battery of tests was administered to measure spoken and written language ability and the 3 metalinguistic domains of phonological, semantic, and syntactic awareness. Spoken language ability was positively correlated with semantic and syntactic awareness. The relative importance of each metalinguistic domain varied with level of written language development. Phonological awareness was the only predictor of decoding. Syntactic awareness and phonological awareness were significant variables in sentence comprehension. Metalinguistic ability was a better predictor of written language development than spoken language ability. Foreign language learning experience had an effect on syntactic awareness: low experience was superior to no experience, but high experience was not superior to low experience.

  • The study of English words in terms of etymology has a long history, going back over 110 years since Murray et al. (1884). Scholars have therefore had lots of time to gather all kind of information on the origin of English words. In fact, Modern English is the product of a long and complex process of historical developments from a great diversity of sources. The origins and development of English words meaning ‘a vessel for washing, a bath or a toilet’ are traced from Old English to the twentieth century in this paper in terms of the semantic and/or conceptual categories of the words with their particular senses. We conclude this paper with a brief discussion of how the teaching of English words can give some feedback to both teachers and students under the circumstances of English education in Korea and/or how we come to a better understanding of this charming field of English etymology in its own right.

  • This study investigated whether and how semantic nature of intransitive verbs can be related to the L2 overpassivization errors. A total of 126 Korean high school students participated in a grammaticality judgment test on English sentences in which seven semantically different types of intransitive verbs were passivized. The results showed that there was an effect of semantic type on the students' judgment on overpassivization errors. Overall, it was shown that the students experienced the lowest degree of difficulty with the Controlled Process-Motional type verbs while experiencing the high degree of difficulty with the Change of State, Existence of State, Continuation of Pre-existing State, and Uncontrolled Process types. Two interlanguage patterns were also identified: the students at higher proficiency level and those at lower-proficiency level showed distinctive patterns on the task. It was argued that the simple dichotomy of unaccusative-unergative distinction does not suffice for the explanation of the complex phenomenon of L2 overpassivization.

  • This study investigates factors that influence ESL learners' use/avoidance of English phrasal verbs. It especially focuses on two factors, topic difference and group membership. For the purpose, 60 ESL students who took the University English Proficiency Test (UEPT) were selected, and the 60 essays they wrote for the UEPT were analyzed. All the students were with non-Germanic first language backgrounds. Among the 60 essays, 30 essays were selected from the essays written for the International Students UEPT (IS UEPT), which was required of all new international students. Another 30 essays were selected from the essays written for the Regents' UEPT, which was required of all non-native English speaking undergraduate students as a graduation requirement. Results indicate that the length of residency in the U.S. and/or academic status and semantic complexities of English phrasal verbs but not topic difference nor English proficiency affected the use of English phrasal verbs. The study ends with a discussion of pedagogical implications of the findings.

  • Contextual advertising is an important revenue source for major service providers on the Web. Ads classification is one of main tasks in contextual advertising, and it is used to retrieve semantically relevant ads with respect to the content of web pages. However, it is difficult for traditional text classification methods to achieve satisfactory performance in ads classification due to scarce term features in ads. In this paper, we propose a novel ads classification method that handles the lack of term features for classifying ads with short text. The proposed method utilizes a vocabulary expansion technique using semantic associations among terms learned from large-scale search query logs. The evaluation results show that our methodology achieves 4.0% ~ 9.7% improvements in terms of the hierarchical f-measure over the baseline classifiers without vocabulary expansion.
