  • In this paper, we propose Improved Self-Organized Graph(Improved SOG:$SOG^*$)thinning method, which maintains the excellent thinning results of Self-organized graph(SOG) built from Self-Organizing features map and improves the performance of modified SOG using a new incremental learning method of Kohonen features map. In the experiments, this method shows the thinning results equal to those of SOG and the time complexity O((logM)3) superior to it. Therefore, the proposed method is useful for the feature extraction from digits and characters in the preprocessing step.

  • Self-thinning was measured in Salix communities on Bam Island in Seoul at various age stages. $D^2H$ was used to estimate tree biomass, where D is stem diameter at breast height or 10 cm height for plants with height <1.5 m, and H is height. A log-log plot of density versus $D^2H$ and correlation analysis indicated a significant relationship between density and biomass with equation 'log $D^2H$ = -1.27 log N + 7.06'. This indicates that self-thinning affects biomass in the Salix community with -1.27 as the thinning coefficient. If we assume a thinning exponent -3/2, then the allometric coefficient of the equation, log w = a log $D^2H$ + b, is 1.18. This is much higher than that for any other species studied in Korea. There were statistically significant relationships between age and density and between age and basal area and these relationships suggest guidelines for transplantation of willows and for the assessment of Salix community restoration projects in riverine wetlands based on standard density, basal area, and age. The results of this study may also increase understanding of succession processes in Salix community restoration in riverine wetlands.

  • Thinning of apple fruitlets is one of the most laborious and important works for the improvement of fruit quality and for the promotion of sufficient flower bud formation to prevent alternate bearing in commercial cultivars. Lateral fruits of self-thinning apple cultivars fall naturally within 30 days after full bloom and only central fruit remains to mature. Differences of gene expression between central fruit and lateral fruit were investigated by differential display (DD) PCR. Partial cDNAs of 30 clones from the central fruit and 24 clones from the lateral fruit were selected for nucleotide sequence determination and homology searches. The levels of transcripts coding for proteins involved in pathogenesis related proteins, senescence, temperature stress, protein degradation, fruit browning, sorbitol metabolism were significantly higher in pedicels of lateral fruit than in pedicels of central fruit. On the other hand, the up-regulation of proteins involved in anthocyanin and flavanol biosynthesis and ethylene synthesis were observed in pedicels of central fruit. In Real time PCR analysis, cytochrome P450 gene was confirmed as showing a higher expression level in lateral fruit than in central fruit. The results of this study indicate that differentially expressed genes are related to self-thinning characteristics in apple tree.

  • Cryptomeria japonica plantation was monitored every year during 15 years from 1983 to 1997 for stem diameter and volume. The reciprocal equation, 1/Y = A + B/N, was applied to the relationship between cumulative volume Y and cumulative number N from the largest tree in the stand each year. The parameters A and B, which means respectively the reciprocal of an asymptotic value of total stand stem volume and the reciprocal of the maximum stem volume, are related by a power function. The power functional relationship between A and B derived a linear relationship of B-points ( $N_{B}$, $V_{B}$; $N_{B}$ = B/A, $Y_{B}$ = 1/2A) of each Y-N curve on log-log coordinates. The gradient of B-point line was so steep that the Y-N curve moved parallel upward year by year. The time trajectory of mean stem volume (W) and density ($\rho$) provided evidence in favor of the 3/2 power law of self-thinning, because the gradient of W - $\rho$ trajectory on log-log coordinates approximated to -3/2 at the final stage of stand development. On the basis of the results of Y-N curves and W - $\rho$ trajectory, the time trajectory of maximum stem volume $W_{max obs}$ and $\rho$ was derived theoretically. The gradient of $W_{max obs}$ - $\rho$ trajectory on log-log coordinates is calculated to be -0.6105 at the final stage. The gradient of $W_{max obs}$ - $\rho$ trajectory was steeper than that of W - $\rho$ trajectory at the early stage, while the former is gentler than the latter at the later stage.stage.e.age.e.

  • In this study, 15 survival functions in integral and difference forms for forest plantation were derived based on assumptions for the number of surviving trees and the differential forms of the mortality rate model. Then, performance of the models was evaluated by fitting to remeasurement data of unthinned white pine(Pinus strobes) forest plantation. As a result, three equations associated with a power function of age, $t^{\beta}$, are somewhat more suitable for describing the effect of self-thinning over time. On the other hand, a general survival function for Japanese larch(Larix leptolepts) forest plantation was derived in order to exam the effect of site quality on self-thinning procedures. The results indicate that the $N_{min}$ is negatively correlated with site index and, even though the same initial stand density was assumed, the survival function curves differ in shapes associated with site index values.

  • This study assessed the long term structure of forest age groups and the possibility of a domestic wood supply based on the wood industry buildup master plan. Wood is assumed to be supplied by main cutting, renewal, cutting damaged trees and thinning. The cohort equation was applied to identify the dynamic changes in forest area according to the age groups. The sixth age group, which composed of only 7.7% in 2010, is expected to comprise 73% of the total production land. The area distributions of the other age groups are expected to be between 5.3 - 5.6%. Consequently, the production volume from main cutting accounts for approximately 93 - 95% of the total production. The production volume from thinning, which depends on the area of the second and third age groups, will be decreased gradually. When the volume of domestic timber supply was compared with the timber demand from a previous study, the self-sufficiency of timber demand will be approximately 83% in 2050.

  • This paper describes trends in conventional scaling compared with advanced technologies such as 3D integration (3DI) and bumpless through-silicon via (TSV) processes, as well as the characteristics of CMOS (Complementary Metal Oxide Semiconductor) Logic device after thinning the wafers to less than $10{\mu}m$. Each module process including thinning, stacking, and TSV, is optimized for 3D Wafer-on-Wafer (WOW) application. Optimization results are discussed with valuable data in detail. Since vertical wiring of bumpless TSV can be connected directly to the upper and lower substrates by self-alignment, bumps are not necessary when TSV interconnects are used.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of the expansion and withering of Salix subfragilis communities on the water quality in Namgang Dam reservoir. The distribution area of the Salix subfragilis communities was 0.12 km2 in 2003 for the first time, but it was 3.58 km2 in 2019, which has increased rapidly by about 30 times in 16 years. However, in 2013, the distribution area has decreased by 0.17 km2 due to long-term immersion in high turbidity, and self-thinning in Salix subfragilis communities. The lake characteristics of reservoir showed a combination of lake type and river type in terms of average water depth, watershed area/lake surface area ratio, water residence time, flushing rate, and stratification. From the result of analyzing long-term changes in lake water quality, COD, TP, and chlorophyll-a in Salix subfragilis communities were significantly larger than those in the three points located in the central part of reservoir. In particular, the fact that the value of chlorophyll-a showed the maximum value in winter rather than summer, unlike the trend of the three points in the Namgang Dam water quality monitoring network, is thought to have occurred internally rather than externally. It can be estimated that one cause of this deterioration of the water quality in Namgang Dam reservoir is the huge amount of nutrients generated in the decomposition process of by-products such as fallen leaves, branches and withered trees in Salix subfragilis communities.
