Objectives: This study was conducted to investigate the effects of a self growth program through MBTI on interpersonal relationships, and the career identity of nursing college students. Methods: A randomized controlled pre-post test experimental design was used for this study. The 24 nursing students were randomly assigned into two groups: 12 for the experimental group, and 12 for the control group. The subjects were junior nursing students, who were randomly selected from an undergraduate nursing program at K university located in Daegu, Korea. The data was collected from March 18 to April 1, 2002. The MBTI self growth program used in this study was based on the one developed by Shim and Kim (1997). The 12 experimental group students received the group self growth program through MBTI for 15 hours, while the 12 control group students received no treatment, except a series of tests. The Korean version MBTI test used in this study was developed and verified for reliability and validity by Kim and Sim (1990). Change in inter-personal relationships was measured using the Relationship Change Scale developed by Schlein and Guerney (1971), and modified by Lee and Mun (1982). Career identity was measured using the My Vocational Situation developed by Holland. Daiger and Power (1980), and revised by Kim (1997). The data were analyzed with the SPSS Win 10.0 program, through which the 2 test, t-test, and Repeated measures ANOVA were examined. Results: 1) The first hypothesis, 'the experimental group that received the self growth program through MBTI will obtain a higher interpersonal relationship score than the control group', was supported (F=5.295. p=.031. Interaction: p=.000). 2) The second hypothesis, 'the experimental group that received the self growth program through MBTI will obtain a higher career identity score than the control group', was supported (F=28.575, p=.000, Interaction: p=.000). Conclusion: The results showed that the ready planned self growth program through MBTI had positive effects on improving the interpersonal relationships, and the career identity of nursing college students.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of learning motive enhancing program on academic self efficacy, learning habits, and self esteem in underachieve nursing college students. Method: This study was an one group pre and post test design. Underachievers in nursing college (n=38) were participated. Learning motive enhancing program was carried out for 110 minutes a week for 8 weeks. Academic self efficacy was measured by an academic self efficacy scale developed by Kim ae young & Park in young in 2001. To assess learning habits, the learning habits measurement scale developed by Kim young jin was used. Self esteem was measured by Rosenberg's self esteem scale. Result: After completing the learning motive enhancing program, significant improvement was found in learning habit and self esteem. As for sub-factors, efficacy for self confidence among academic self efficacy showed significant differences after treatment. Conclusion: Learning motive enhancing program appears to be effective in increasing learning habit and self-esteem of underachievers in nursing college students.
This research developed self-directed teaming program for students who learn mathematics to improve their abilities for learning mathematics. A small-group cooperative teaming model was based on the self-directed loaming program which this research developed. The main target of this program was the second grade students of middle school. The program was consisted with three developing parts. The part 1 of program developing was consisted with analyzing and reconstructing mathematics curriculum, devising small-group cooperative learning program, and structuring teaching and teaming plans. The part 2 included the management of small-group cooperative Loaming and how to use the materials which this research developed. The part 3 provided various cooperative learning opportunities for students to improve their abilities for loaming mathematics.
Cancer survivor's self-help group may promote psychosocial adjustment in cancer patients. Self-transcendence has been shown to be related with crisis and adjustment in women with breast cancer. The purpose of this study is to determine the effectiveness of self-transcendence promoting program to facilitate self-transcendence, physical, and emotional well-being in women with breast cancer. Thirty patients who received mastectomy were recruited, but 9 subjects of experimental group and 14 subjects of control group participated in this study. Subjects of experimental group attended the self-help group for self-transcendence once a week for 6 weeks. Each session of program was proceeded for 2hours and the program contained activities for promoting self-transcendence, stress management, communication skill, exercise and relaxation, symptom management, and family support. Data were collected by self-reporting questionnaires within seven days after mastectomy and after the program was finished in experimental group, within 7 days after mastectomy and after 3 months in control group. Self-transcendence was assessed using the self-transcendence scale (STS) developed by Reed. Physical well being was assessed using Symptom distress scale (SDS) developed by McCorkle and Young and emotional well being was assessed using Profile of mood states (POMS). As a result, no significant differences were found between both groups in changes of self-transcendence, emotional well-being, and physical well-being. Self-transcendence score was significantly decreased in control group (p =0.16). But that of experimental group showed no decrease. In conclusions, when the self-transcendence promoting program is provided to the patients with breast cancer, it can be helpful for promoting self- transcendence. For the further study, repeated research with appropriate sample size and more intensive nursing intervention to promote self-transcendence is suggested. And reassessment after 6 months is recommended for testing long term effects of the program.
The purposes of this study are 1) to modify a self-help program for patients having fibromyalgia, 2) to revise instruments to measure the self-efficacy and impact of fibromyalgia; and 3) to test the effects of the program in terms of self-efficacy, physical activities, and clinical symptoms. The subjects of this study were persons diagnosed as fibromyalgia at a university hospital. For the first two purposes, six patients were selected. Twenty three subjects for the third purpose were selected and assigned to experimental and control group on the base of their residence. Thirteen were assigned to the experimental group, while 10 to the control group. Instruments selected for revision were self-efficacy scale and fibromyalgia impact profile. On the basis of the text developed by Arthritis Foundation, a program for patients with fibromyalgia was tentatively developed. Instruments for measurement of self-efficacy and impact of fibromyalgia were revised to show high reliabilities. Results obtained by utilization of the program were as follows : 1) There were no increase of self-efficacy and physical activities. 2) There were no improvement of the number of tender points and pain. 3) There were improvement of depression, fatigue and sleep impairment. These findings indicate the needs for modification of the program with emphasis of exercise for relaxation of tender points, increases of enactive action and vicarious learning.
Purpose: The study aimed to design and develop an automated personalized self-care (APSC) program for patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. The secondary aim was to present a clinical protocol as a mixed-method research to test the program effects. Methods: The APSC program was developed in the order of analysis, design, implementation, and evaluation according to the software development life cycle, and was guided by the self-regulatory theory. The content validity, heuristics, and usability of the program were verified by experts and patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. Results: The APSC program was developed based on goal setting, education, monitoring, and feedback components corresponding to the phases of forethought, performance/volitional control, and self-reflection of self-regulatory theory. Using the mobile application, the participants are able to learn from educational materials, monitor their health behaviors, receive weekly-automated personalized goals and feedback messages, and use an automated conversation system to solve the problems related to self-care. The ongoing two-year study utilizes a mixed method design, with 180 patients having type 2 diabetes mellitus randomized to receive either the intervention or usual care. The participants will be reviewed for self-care self-efficacy, health behaviors, and health outcomes at 6, 12, 18, and 24 months. Participants in the intervention group will be interviewed about their experiences. Conclusion: The APSC program can serve as an effective tool for facilitating diabetes health behaviors by improving patients' self-care self-efficacy and self-regulation for self-care. However, the clinical effectiveness of this program requires further investigation.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to develop a self-transcendence enhancement program and examine its effect on self-transcendence, spiritual well-being, and psychological well-being in elderly women who live alone. Methods: A self-transcendence enhancement program was developed through theory, literature review, and in-depth interviews. The theoretical framework came from the Psychoeducational Approach to Transcendence and Health intervention model based on Reed's middle-range theory of self-transcendence. The program consisted of multiple modalities in a structured, theory-based program lasting for eight weekly sessions. Using a single-group pretest-posttest design, the program was tested on a group of 40 elderly women aged 75 to 84 years living alone in Daejeon, Korea. Participants completed self-reported study questionnaires before and after the program at the elderly welfare center. Data were analyzed using SPSS version 24.0, with significance level set at .05. Paired t-test was used to compare mean differences before and after the program. Results: The mean age of the study participants was 79.1 years. After completing the program, the participants showed higher levels of self-transcendence (t=8.78, p<.001), overall spiritual well-being (t=8.30, p=.002), religious spiritual well-being (t=1.79, p=.040), existential spiritual well-being (t=6.75, p=.002), and positive affect (t=3.77, p=.001) than they did before the program. They also reported lower levels of depression (t=-7.59, p<.001) and negative affect (t=-6.15, p<.001). Conclusion: The self-transcendence enhancement program developed in this study may be effective for improving the level of self-transcendence in elderly women living alone and helping them to attain spiritual and psychological well-being.
The after-school self-esteem program developed for this study consisted of 53 40-minute sessions; its goal was to instill a sense of self-reliance, belonging to society, self-worth, self-control, independence, responsibility, and respect. The program was administered to 32 first, second and third grade elementary school children from April 2002 to September 2002. The data were analyzed by frequency, mean, and paired t-test, using the SAS program package. Results showed significant before and after differences in the degree of self-esteem among the participants in the after-school self-esteem program.
Breast self-exam is easiest, safe and cost effective to be recommended as an important method for early detection of breast cancer. This experimental research with non-equal control design was to develop the efficacy expectation program for breast self-exam based on Bandura's self-efficacy information source. The study objects selected from two local churches in Busan. Twenty from S church were selected as a study group, twenty from D church as a control group. Efficacy expectation promoting program was based on Bandura's efficacy promoting source and was two hour lecture including slide, video tape, demonstration, pamphlet. After this, there were individual interviews with them and consultations through telephone f or verbal persuasion on the weekly basis between the first week and the fifth week. The effect from the experiment were measured on the first week after education and on the fifth week. Data from control group was collected during the period from Jan 11, 2 001 to Feb 15, 2001 and data from study group was collected during the period from Jan 12, 2001 to Feb 16, 2001. Measurement instrument for this study was developed by the author with the advice of specialist in order to measure self-efficacy and breast self-exam practice. Data analysis was done by using SPSS/10.0 PC program $with^2-$ test. t-test and ANCOVA. Proved results for hypothesis were as follows. 1) It was supported that "Study group educated by efficacy expectation promoting program has higher score in change rat e of self-efficacy than control group." (1 week after education F=18.395, p=.000 5 weeks after education F=28.972, p=.000) 2) It was supported that "Study group educated by efficacy expectation promoting program has higher score in change rate of exam practice than control group." (1 week after education F=37.984, p=.000 5 weeks after education F=28.972, p=.000) In conclusion, efficacy expectation promoting program for breast self-exam developed by this study may increase s elf-efficacy and breast self-exam practice.
Propose. An effective rehabilitation program had been developed for psychiatric patients' self management of medication and symptoms in Korea. The rehabilitation program was designed to allow the patients to understand their illness, cope with their medical regimen, and prevent a relapse by recognizing any of the symptoms when they recur. Methods. The developed program utilizes the self efficacy method reported by Bandura, it includes manuals and videotapes focusing on real life situations, small group discussions, and telephone coaching. This study investigated the effects of this program with respect to various predictable variables in psychiatric rehabilitation. Thirty eight patients were selected for this study, 18 in the experimental program and 20 as controls. Results. The results showed that the subjects who attended this educational program reported significantly more improvement in attitude toward medication compliance (p=0.033), and significantly less relapse warning symptom scores (p=0.000) than the controls. Conclusion. This program may be a useful psychoeducational resource for professionals in the field of clinical practice in psychiatry.
