The purpose of this study is to explore the casual relationship between expanded self-concept including self-esteem and self-congruity with various variables of pro-environmental psychology and green consumer behavior simultaneously by using the model of structural equation. Results of the study showed that independent self-construals only affected pro-environmental psychology and dependent self-construals did not affect pro-environmental psychology and green consumer behavior, while metapersonal self-construals affected both pro-environmental psychology and green consumer behavior. Consumers with independent self-construals in strong individualistic tendency had an affirmative thoughts about environment friendliness while consumers considerate of others with dependent self-construals in strong collective tendency showed low pro-environmental psychology and green consumer behavior, which was interesting findings. In regards to the effect of metapersonal Self-construal on pro-environmental psychology, it was analyzed that lower consumer self-esteem increased pro-environmental psychology, and also when self-congruity was low, metapersonal Self-construal had a positive effect on green consumer behavior.
This study examined the role of self-construals in marital satisfaction among men and women, and explored how independent and interdependent self-construals contribute to or undermine marital satisfaction. Data were drawn from a self-administered questionnaire study in which 489 married people(aged 25-75) residing in Seoul participated. Path analyses were conducted using Structural Equation Modeling Program, and a goodness of fit of the proposed path model was evaluated. As expected, the positive impact of independent self-construal on marital satisfaction was mediated by self-esteem and clarity of communication, and that of interdependent self-construal on marital satisfaction was mediated by psychological stability and a sense of relational well-being. The direct effects of these two types of self-construal on marital satisfaction were opposite. As predicted, independent self-construal decreased marital satisfaction, whereas interdependent self-construal increased it. All of the direct and indirect effects of independent and interdependent self-construals on marital satisfaction were statistically significant, except the indirect effect of interdependent self-construal as mediated by psychological stability. The goodness of fit indexes of the path model indicated that the model was acceptable. However, the results of separate path analyses for men and women showed that some of the effects of self-construals on marital satisfaction differed by gender. Based on these results, implications for clinical social work practice were discussed.
This thesis explores the relationship between self-construal and online communication pattern. The Internet has changed human-to human communication. This study was to analyze how the self-construal was appeared and what relationship self-construal had with several variables: the motivation of the on-line community member, the on-line community's character, the communication behavior, the level of relationship between on-line community members- in on-line communities. The data was collected through the on-line survey research(N=79) and off-line survey research(N=255). The results lead us to conclude that the self-construals in on-line communities reflect two factors, which is similar to the off-line community. Nevertheless, self-construals in on-line communities are more complicated. In addition, uniqueness of self-construals which is the tendency to express the self and think connection with others critical is the important factor in on-line communities' communication. It is also central that the impact of self-construals on communication behavior is significant. I think this study was a small touch to explore cyber communication applying to self-consturals. And I hope this small touch would spread out and help to understand human communication as well as cyber communication.
The purpose of this study is to analyze the effects of dominant brand, the quality variation among brands in the extension product category and the self-construals on consumer's attitude about extension products. The experimental design consist of three-way complex factors and 226 subjects participated for the study. The results showed that when there was fashion brand extension, whether or not there was an existing dominant brand in the extension product category, the quality variation among brands in the extension product category and the types of self-construals had a significant interaction effect on their favorableness and intention to purchase the extension products. Regardless of an existing dominant brand however, the group who had an interdependent self-construal showed higher favorableness and intention to purchase the extension products when the quality variation among brands in the extension product category was lower than when it was high, whereas the group who had an independent self-construal showed no significant difference of the favorableness and intention to purchase the extension products.
The study examined how the fun elements of online games and gamers' self-construals affected their flow experience and loyalty to games, focusing on the comparison between the social gamers and the asocial gamers. Results showed that, first, there were significant differences between the two groups in the respective fun elements of achievement, challenge, and closeness; second, differences of gamers' self-construals were found in game environment rather than lifeworld environment; third, the flow experience and game loyalty of social gamers were higher than those of asocial gamers; finally, there were significant differences between the two groups in the effects of the fun elements and gamers' self-construals on their flow experience and game loyalty.
The purpose of the present study is to examine how visitors of personal web sites evaluate self presentation styles. We hypothesized that visitors' gender, self construals, and self esteem would influence the evaluation (likeability and perceived competence) of the self presentation styles (bragging or positive presentation). The hypothesized models were tested with structural equation modeling. Gender differences among the constructs were also examined through latent mean analysis. The results revealed that females tended to have higher interdependent self construal than males. And the male and the female students showed higher likeability toward the self presentations of the other gender. Regarding perceived competence, women and men perceived the other gender more competent, and especially, women perceived men's bragging presentation more competent. Self construals and self esteem, however, did not show any significant effects, which were inconsistent with the results of the previous studies conducted with offline self presentation styles. One of the main implications of this study is that visitors' gender, among other things, is the most infueltial factor in perceiving and evaluating others' self presentation through personal web sites.
This study investigated the relationship between emotional contagion and altruistic behaviors and also examined the moderating effect of self-construals(independent and interdependent self) in this relationship. It was hypothesized that the emotional expression of people in need would be caught by others through automatic mimicry, that emotional information would be internalized through the facial-feedback process and that the transferred emotion would eventually result in a motive to call for altruistic behaviors. In Study 1, participants watched a video clip about a disabled student reporting difficulties in school life but showing facial expression opposite to the contents of message to separate emotional contagion and empathy. Participants' decision to participate in voluntary works for the disabled student was measured. As a result, it was found that the more participants experienced emotional contagion, the more they participated in altruistic behaviors. Study 2 measured the vulnerability to emotional contagion, actual experiences of altruistic behaviors, and self-construals. The results of hierarchical regression showed that interdependent self moderated the influence of emotional contagion on altruistic behaviors whereas independent self moderated the relationship in an opposite direction. The implications of emotion and altruistic behaviors in human evolution process are discussed.
Eliminativist about mentality want to throw out propositional attitude. In this respect, according to R. G. Swinburne, Lynne R. Baker, this theory seems to be self refuting. But it is not so clear enough in what sense eliminativism is self refuting. There are several construals of self-refutation argument against eliminativism. Among them, Patricia Churchland's simple version is defended here. For doing this, we need to analyze William Ramsey's reconstruction of self- refutation argument and J. L. Mackie's famous concept of self-refutation. As a result of this analysis, we can understand most self-refutation arguments against eliminativism don't succeed to defeat eliminativism with this argument.
Purpose - This research aims to examine the influence of social capital formed on SNS on SNS users' life satisfaction. This research divides social capital into bridging and bonding social capital based on Social Capital Theory and suggests that each type of social capital will have a positive impact on SNS users' life satisfaction. In addition, this research suggests the self-construal of SNS users as a moderating variable based on Self-Construal Theory. Research design, data, and methodology - To test the hypotheses presented, an online survey was conducted with adult participants. An online research company was hired to conduct an online survey; survey participants were volunteer adult participants residing in Korea. And data was analyzed using SPSS. Results - Analysis results showed that the impact of bonding social capital on life satisfaction was not statistically different between SNS users of differing self-construals(independent vs. interdependent self-construal). However, this study also determined that the impact of bridging social capital on life satisfaction was greater for SNS users with an interdependent self-construal as opposed to those with an independent self-construal. Conclusions - The results of this study expand the scope of available research on social capital formed on SNS and provide practical implications for SNS providers.
Purpose - This study focused on the attitude differences towards harmony-focused Ad and uniqueness-focused Ad, also those towards brand advertised in each of the two type Ads between self-construals. Research design, data, and methodology - Main survey was conducted online with the people in China, and collected 107 data through harmony Ad questionnaire and 109 data through uniqueness Ad questionnaire. Anova and t-test were used to verify hypotheses. Results - First, More positive attitude towards harmony-focused Ad and the brand in it there was at interdependent Chinese consumers than at independent Chinese consumers. Second, the independent Chinese consumers and the interdependent Chinese consumers did not form significant attitude difference towards uniqueness-focused Ad. However the independent Chinese consumers showed more positive attitude towards the brand in the uniqueness-focused Ad than the interdependent Chinese consumers. Conclusions - By highlighting the attributes of Chinese consumers' self-construal, to appeal to interdependent Chinese consumers, marketers should develop harmony-focused advertisement, and they should appeal to independent Chinese consumers by using uniqueness-focused advertisement. However the harmony might be pursued as the main content in the overall environment by Chinese people. Therefore it is necessary for the marketers to consider the harmony even when appealing them by emphasizing the uniqueness.
