The Relationship Between Social Stigma and Psychosocial Adjustment in Out-of-School Youth: The Moderating Effects of Self-concept Clarity (학교 밖 청소년의 사회적 낙인과 심리사회적 적응 간의 관계: 자기개념 명확성의 조절효과)

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the influence of social stigma on psychosocial adjustment in out-of-school youth and the moderating effects of self-concept clarity on the relationship between social stigma and psychosocial adjustment. The subjects in this study were out-of-school youth who resided in the city of Busan, on whom a survey was conducted. The findings of the study were as follows: First, social stigma was found to have exercised a negative influence on self-concept clarity. Second, social stigma was found to have exercised a negative influence on psychosocial adjustment. Third, self-concept clarity was found to have exercised a negative influence on psychosocial adjustment. Fourth, self-concept clarity was found to have had moderating effects on the relationship between social stigma and psychosocial adjustment. This study is of significance in that it attempted to seek ways of improving the psychosocial adjustment of out-of-school youth and urged offering counseling intervention geared toward boosting self-concept clarity by analyzing the moderating effects of self-concept clarity on the relationship between social stigma and psychosocial adjustment.

Social-Cultural Adjustment of North Korean Defectors by Self-Esteem and Internal Attribution (새터민의 자아존중감 및 내적귀인성향에 따른 사회문화적 적응)

  • This study explores the social-cultural adjustments of North Korean defectors with respect to their self-esteem and internal attribution. The data were obtained from a survey of 195 North Korean defectors who had recently entered South Korea. The respondents had moderate difficulties in their social-cultural adjustment consisting of social activity restriction, discrimination, and social exclusion. Their social-cultural adjustment was positively associated with internal attribution. Those with internal attribution tended to have fewer problems in adjusting to the social systems and culture of South Korea. The findings of this study imply that psychological resources play a role in enhancing the social-cultural adjustment of North Korean defectors.

Relationships between Children's Aggression and the Variables as Individual, Family, and School Adjustment (아동의 개인, 가족 변인 및 학교적응과 공격성의 관계)

  • This study examined relationships between children's aggression and the variables such as individual, family, and school adjustment. For this study, individual variables included age, self-esteem, and game-addiction tendency. Family variables included mother's controlling parenting, child-abuse, parents' marital conflict. As for school adjustment, teacher relations, peer relations, classroom and rule adjustment in school were examined. The sample consisted of 642 children of the fifth and sixth grade in Busan. Statistics and methods used for data analysis included frequency, percentage, Cronbach's alpha, factor analysis, two-way Anova, Pearson's correlation, and Hierarchical Regression. Several major results were found from the analysis: First, boys' aggression was higher than girls'. But no age difference was found in children's aggression. Second, game-addiction tendency had a positive correlation with children's aggression. In addition, self-esteem had a negative correlation with boys' aggression. Third, mother's controlling parenting had a positive correlation with children's aggression. Child abuse had a positive correlation with boys' aggression, and parents' marital conflict with girls' aggression. Fourth, teacher relations, peer relations, classroom and rule adjustment in school had a negative correlation with boys' aggression. In addition, rule adjustment in school had a negative correlation with girls' aggression. Fifth, game-addiction tendency, rule adjustment in school, self-esteem, mother's controlling parenting and teacher relations in school were important variables predicting boys' aggression. On the other hand, game-addiction tendency and rule adjustment in school were important variables predicting girls' aggression.

Effects of Self-Control and School Adjustment on Smartphone Addiction among Elementary School Students

  • This study presents an examination of the effects of the sub-factors of both self-control and school adjustment on smartphone addiction among a sample of elementary school students. The study is comprised of 93 5th-grade students from x elementary school located in Seoul, Korea. A descriptive analysis, Pearson's correlation, and multiple regression analysis were performed, and the following two study results are presented: 1) Among the sub-factors of self-control, instant gratification positively predicts smartphone addiction. 2) Among the sub-factors of school adjustment, a student's adherence to school rules negatively predicts smartphone addiction. Based on these results, the implications for preventing smartphone addiction among elementary-school students are discussed.

Effects of Self-Esteem, Healthiness of Family, and Sociodemographic Variables on the School Life Adjustment in Rural Adolescents (자아존중감, 가족의 건강성, 사회인구학적 변인이 농촌청소년의 학교생활적응에 미치는 영향)

  • This study examined the degree of school life adjustment in rural adolescents as well as related variables. For this purpose, the data of 192 persons from 40 villages in 8 provinces were analyzed using a SAS 8.1 program. The results of the analysis were as follows : 1) The overall degree of school life adjustment was quantified as about 67 points out of a 100 possible points. 2) The variables that affected the level of adjustment were self-esteem, healthiness of family, age. 3) The explanatory power of such variables as sex, religion, personality, school grades, father satisfaction, and mother satisfaction partially affected significantly in four sub-areas (teather relation, friend relation, attitude of classwork and rule of school areas) of adjustment. The groundwork of this study could be used as basic materials to develop an educational program to improve the adjustment of school life for rural adolescent.

  • The purpose of this study was two folded. The first was to examine relationships among children's self-resilience, their mother's parenting style, family strength and the children's school adjustment and the second was to investigate the relative effects of the three variables on the children's school adjustment. To achieve the purposes, a total of 198 5th and 6th grade children and their mothers were surveyed on children's resilience scale, parenting style scale, family strength scale, and school adjustment scale. As a results, positive relationships among the four variables were observed. Also it was founded that children's self-resilience is the most effective, mothers' parenting style is the second, and family strength is the least factor on school adjustment. From the results the researchers suggested that early intervention is needed to enhance family strength as well as intervention to improve self-resilience in order to increase the children's school adjustment.

Effects of Quality of Life, Family Strength, Self-Resilience on the School Adjustment in Male High School Students (남자 고등학생들의 삶의 질, 가족건강성, 자아탄력성이 학교적응에 미치는 영향)

  • The purpose of this study was to identify factors that influence school adjustment in male high school students. The participants were 569 male high school students (1th and 2nd grade) in A city. We analyzed quality of life, family strength, self-resilience, and school adjustment of subjects. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson correlation coefficients and multiple regression with the SAS program. The result of this study was that school adjustment was significantly different by school achievement, financial abilities, job of father, scholarship of mother, smoking and drinking alcohol, suicidal ideation and suicide attempts. The school achievement, suicidal ideation, and other quality of life, family strength, self-residence explained 61.4% of school adjustment. Based on the results, if we develop the program which focusing on quality of life, family strength, self-resilience, we could make a meaningful improvement of school adjustment of high school student.

The influencing factors of Self-esteem and Major Satisfaction on College Adjustment among Nursing Students (간호대학생의 자아존중감, 전공만족도가 대학생활 적응에 미치는 영향)

  • The study was conducted to identify the influencing factor of self-esteem and major satisfaction on college adjustment among nursing students. The subjects consisted of 182 nursing students. Data were collected from November to December 2013 and analyzed using SPSS/WIN 21.0 program. The mean score of self-esteem (2.65), major satisfaction (3.43) and college adjustment (3.14) were above the average. Among demographic factors, grade-level, gender, club activities, and monthly income showed significant difference of the score of college adjustment. College adjustment was statistically significantly higher when self-esteem was higher, major satisfaction was higher. Based on the findings of this study, programs promoting major satisfaction and appropriate counseling and academic guidance for nursing students are needed for college nursing students in order to promote college adjustment.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the degree of influence on the elderly’s life adjustment and decision making in the family. For these research tasks the data were collected through interview. the respondents were 296 of man and woman elderly who lived in JeonJu. It was analyzed by various statistical methods such as Frequency, Percentile, ANOVA, correlate, t-test, Multiple Regression Analysis. The finding of this study are as follows; 1) Decision-making of the elderly in family had significant differences I the area of sex, the sum of monthly personal expenses, satisfaction level of personal expenses, subjective economic level and self-esteem in the order named. 2) Elderly life-adjustment had significant differences in the area of the residential district, the present job, the situation of a apouse, religion, education, the sum of the monthly personal expenses, health, satisfaction level of personal expenses, subjective economics level and self-esteem. 3) When we observe relationship with the elderly decision-making in family and life-adjustment, relation decision-making in family and life-adjustment appeared positively. 4) Decision-making of the elderly in family had the significant differences according to the variables such as sex, the sum of monthly personal expenses, and self-esteem in the order named, and the most influential factor among them was sex. 5) Elderly life-adjustment had the significant differences according to the variables such as self-esteem, decision-making, religion, health, the sum of the monthly personal expenses, the residential district in the order named. The most influential factor was self-esteem and the explanary of those variables for the elderly life-adjustment was 55.1%.

School aged Children's Adjustment to Hospital Life (학령기 아동의 입원생활 적응)

  • Purpose: The study was done to identify adjustment to hospital life of school aged children. This research was designed as a descriptive study. Method: A convenience sample of 186 patients who were hospitalized children, 6~12 years old. The instrument in this study were developed by researcher and constructed to include 5 sub categories about adjustment to hospital life. They ask children to rate each item on 5 Likert scale. The data were analyzed by SPSS Win Program. Result: The mean average score of adjustment to hospital life was 91.75(SD 11.22); the social support revealed the highest value, followed by self-esteem, stress on disease, stress on hospitalization, and defense strategies. There was differences on bibliographic data; hospital date, disease type. The relationship between adjustment and sub categories was significant, especially in the stress on hospitalization and disease, social support and self-esteem. The relationship between coping strategies and stress on diseases was reversed. Conclusion: These results suggest that pediatric nurses need to be aware of the adjustment to hospital life. A development of nursing intervention program may be useful and critical for hospitalized school aged children.
