This study investigates channel stabilities with groynes by developing the assessment of it and applying a 2-dimensional numerical model, which simulates flow and sediment transport with various flows in the channel. Evaluation inventories are composed of five items, which are width to depth ratio, sinuosity, bed slopes, velocities in the flow flied, Shields number with discharges and geomorphic characteristics in the study reach. The channel stability is evaluated by applying the evaluation indicators to the channel with and without groynes in the study reach between Dalseong-weir and Gangjeonggoryeong-weir in the Nakdong river. Width to depth ratio, sinuosity, and bed slopes, which are index of river characteristics, little affect the channel stability. However, velocities in the flow flied, and Shields number, which is dimensionless tractive, near the banks of the channel strongly affect the stability. The evaluation values of the stability in the channel on the left and right banks decrease as the number of groynes increase in both the left and right banks, which means that the bank stability increases with the groynes.
Polychlorinated biphenyl (PCBs) is one of major toxic pollutants in marine environments, This artificial chlorinated compound has been found in freshwater, seawater, soil, sediments and organismes living in various environments. Because of its toxicity and degradability, its uses in industrial processes have been banned after 1984 in Korea. Coastal area is an important environment for agriculture, industry, transportation, reduction of pollution loads through biogeochemical processes, cycling of nutrients and recreation. Input of pollutants from land and freshwater has been occurring through runoff, rivers and estuaries. Concentrations of PCBs were determined with GC-ECD. Concentrations of PCBs were in the range of 1.0 - 19.2 ng/g-dry weight of sediment(g-d.w.) at Ulsan, 4.5 -8,2 ng/g-d.w. at Onsan, 2.7 - 33.5 ng/g-d.w. at Masan and 4.0 - 60.7 ng/g-d.w. in Kwangyang, In Inchon area, PCBs were not detected in sediments. In sediments of Nakdong estuary, the distribution of PCBs' concentrations was 0.19 - 303 ng/g-d.w.
The measurement of river discharge is among the most fundamental observations and is necessary for understanding many water-related issues, such as flooding hazards, sediment transportation, and nutrient movement. Traditionally river discharge is estimated by measuring the water stage and converting the measurement to discharge using a stage-discharge rating curve. The possibility of monitoring river discharge from satellites has been largely ignored, because it is difficult to measure water surface information from space with sufficient precision. In this paper, an efficient approach to discharge estimation using mainly satellite data is developed and described. The proposed method, which focuses on the measurement of water-surface width coupled with river width-stage and stage-discharge relationships, is applied to the Yangtze River with good results.
The Arctic Ocean is very sensitive to global warming and Arctic Ocean sediments provide a records of terrestrial climate change, analyzing their composition helps clarify global warming. The gravity core sediment ARA07C-St02B was collected at the East Siberian margin during an Arctic expedition in 2016 on the Korean ice-breaking vessel ARAON, and its provenance was estimated through sedimentological, mineralogical and geochemical analysis. The core sediment was divided into four units based on sediment color, sand content and ice-rafted debris content. Units 1 and 3 had higher sand and ice-rafted debris contents than units 2 and 4, and contained a brown layer, whereas units 2 and 4 were mainly composed of a gray layer. Correlation analysis using the adjacent core sediment ARA03B-27 suggested that the sediment units were deposited during marine isotope stage 1 to 4. The bulk mineral, clay mineral, and geochemical compositions of units including a brown layer differed from units including a gray layer. Bulk and clay mineral compositions indicated that coarse and fine sediments had a different origin. Coarse sediments might have been deposited mostly by the East Siberian Coastal Current from the Laptev Sea and the East Siberian Sea or by the Beaufort Gyre from the Chukchi Sea, whereas fine sediments might have been transpoted mostly by currents from the East Siberian Sea, the Chukchi Sea and the Beaufort Sea. Some of the coarse sediments in unit 1 and fine sediments in unit 3 might have been deposited by iceberg ice, sea ice or current from the Beaufort Sea and the Canada Archipelago. Investigating the geochemical composition of the potential origins will elucidate the origin and transportation of the study area's core sediments.

Soil, ground water and sea bed are exposed to continuous accumulation of polluted materials causing serious environmental damage. It has been reported that such pollution causes a massive mortality of fish stock in rivers by the resuspension of toxic chemicals during strong wind conditions. Therefore, it becomes apparent that there is an immediate demand for the restoration treatment of polluted river bed (or sea bed) sediment layers. Pollution levels of major rivers and ports such as Pal-dang, Kyung-an rivers, Ma-san port are becoming public concern and are posing a serious environmental threat. In particular, the pollution of Shi-hwa river has become a nation wide issue for last few years. In spite of such public concern, the pollution level of such rivers or port are getting worse everyday. In this study, an environmentally sound engineering package is introduced which helps to restore the polluted river bed or sea bed sediments. This engineering package is consisted of a suction facility followed by a series of mechanical, chemical as well as biological treatment units. The suction facility is designed to minimize the secondary pollution due to the resuspension of toxic materials during suction. The sea bed cleaning engineering package is designed to be installed on the top of a floating barge. Such combination of environmental plant and shipbuilding technology provides a cost-effective solution, minimizing the cost involved in the transportation between suction and treatment facilities.
In this study, the development processes of multiple bars in the channels with erodible banks were investigated by double Fourier analysis. The initially straight channels in the experiment flume were widened with eroding the side banks, and the multiple bars were generated and grew due to stalling of the sediment on the bed. The bars migrated downstream and the size of the bars increased with time. The flow was separated around the bars, and the bed and banks near the bars were scoured due to the impinged secondary flow. The morphologic changes were accelerated by the bank erosion, which affected the fluctuations of sediment discharge downstream. The double Fourier analysis of the bed waves showed that 1-1 mode (alternate bar) was dominant at the initial stage of the channel development. As time increased, 2-3 mode (central or multiple bars) was dominant due to the increased width to depth ratio. Moreover, the number of bars in a cross section of the channel were increased due to the non linearity of alternate bars. The width to depth ratio was increased by the bank erosion, which affected the bar migration and the bar wavelength. However, the dimensionless tractive force was decreased by it.
To study biogeochemical characteristics and origin organic matter, sediment samples were taken from Site of 1249C and Stie 1251B of ODP Leg 204. Data of Rock-Eval, isotope, and element analysis generally indicate dominance of marine organic matter in sediments deposited under marine sedimentary environment. Only Rock-Eval data are somewhat different from those of others owing to under-maturation of organic matter. Samples of Site 1249C show high content of gas hydrate, whereas Site 1251B low content of gas hydrate in some intervals of the core. This result may be accounted to different location of two cores and presence of transportation passage (Horizon A, BSR 2) of thermogenic gas in the core, 1249 C. However, Site 1251B Located in the basin of low accumulation of gas hydrate is presumed to be limited in the gas hydrate production. Because not only transportation passage is limited to move thermogenic gas from the core, but also gas supply was not enough. Therefore, the biogenic gas that resulted from diagenesis of there sediment is superior.
This study analyzes the impact on geomorphic changes downstream due to alternate bars developed weir upstream through laboratory experiments. The disturbance, such as a spur in the side wall, of the flow at the inlet of the channel triggers the development of alternate bar upstream at the beginning of the experiment, and gradually moved downstream with keeping their shapes over time. The bed in the downstream of weir in the mid of channel scoured due to the scarcity of sediment inflow because weir upstream traps it. Moreover, bar migration speed decreases as the bars approaches to the weir with time. However, as time increases, the alternate bars upstream migrate over the weir, and sediment in the eroded bed of the weir downstream are deposited. The phase of the bar upstream changes oppositely after passing through the weir. The phase of the bar downstream changes rapidly as the shape of alternate bar is clear upstream, which is affected by the strong disturbance. The phase of bar changes, and the bar migration speed decreases gradually with time, and finally stopped due to forcing effects on the bar by the disturbance. The faster the reaction of alternate bar with a long spur, the larger the bar height formed downstream and the shorter the bar length. This means that the larger the forcing effect of bar, the more it affects the bar migration. In addition, although the size of the alternate bar increases over time, the bar doesn't migrate downstream and a forced bar is generated.

Hazardous and noxious substances (HNS) may cause maritime incidents during marine transportation, which are liable to lead to a large amount of spillage or discharge into the sea. The damage to the marine environment caused by the HNS spill or discharge is known to be much greater than the damage caused by oil spill. Particularly dangerous is HNS, which is deposited or buried in the seabed, as it can damage the organisms that live on, in, and near the bottom of the sea, the so-called "benthos," forming the benthic ecosystem. Therefore, it is vital that the HNS deposited on the seabed be recovered. In order to do so, procedures and equipment are required for accurate detection, stabilization treatment, and recovery of HNS in subsea sediment. Thus, when developing a mechanical recovery system, the performance requirements should be selected using performance indices, and the conceptual design of the mechanical recovery system should be based on performance requirements decided upon and selected in advance. Therefore, this study was conducted to arrive at a conceptual design for a mechanical recovery system for the recovery of HNS deposited on the seabed. In the design of the system, based on the fundamental scenario, the method of suction foundation with the function of self enclosing was adopted for recovering the HNS sediment in the subsea sediment. The mechanical recovery system comprises the suction foundation, pollution prevention, a pump system, control system, monitoring device, location information device, transfer device, and tanks. This conceptual design is expected to be reflected and used in the basic design of the components and shapes of the mechanical recovery system.
This study investigates the sediment processes the Improved-pneumatic-movable weir through laboratory experiments considering changing channel slopes. Experimental results show that the delta migrates towards the weir and the delta height increases as time passes. Moreover, as the delta approaches the weir, the delta migration speed decreases. As the dimensionless delta location increases, the effective height of dimensionless delta and the dimensionless reservoir capacity increases. Therefore, under the same slope conditions, the sediment deposition volume of the delta is small as the channel slope is mild. This means that the channel slope affects the development of the delta in the upstream of the Improved-pneumatic-movable weir. At the beginning of the experiment, the foreset slope is mild. However, the foreset slope of the delta increases with water depth as the delta migrates downstream. Moreover, as the slope is mild, the ratio of delta front length to delta height is close to 1, and the dimensionless delta height and the dimensionless delta migration speed decrease. As the delta height increases, the water depth, the velocity approaching to the weir and the delta migration speed decrease.
