  • One of the most important factors for a proper design of a slender compression member may be the exact determination of the elastic critical load of that member. In the cases of non-prismatic compression member, however, there are times when the exact critical load becomes impossible to determinate if one relies on the neutral equilibrium method or energy principle. Here in this paper, the approximate critical loads of symmetrically or non-symmetrically tapered members are computed by finite element method. The two parameters considered in this numerical analysis are the taper parameter, $\alpha$ and the sectional property parameters, m. The computed results for each sectional property parameter, m are presented in an algebraic equation which agrees with those by F.E.M The algebraic equation can be easily used by structural engineers, who are engaged in structural analysis and design of non-prismatic compression member.

  • Current Bridge Specification for Highway Bridges adopts a simplified method to determine sectional forces of abutment wing by diving its area into four sections. This simplified method was developed when numerical analysis was not mature and computer resources were expensive. It has been criticized that the simplified method produces conservative results. This study evaluates the problem of current design practice to improve the design guideline for abutment wing.

  • This paper explains manufacturing process, analysis and experimental studies on a hybrid composite carbody of Korean tilting train. The composite carbody with length of 23m was manufactured as a sandwich structure composed of a aluminium honeycomb core and woven fabric carbon/epoxy faces. In order to evaluate deformational behavior of the composite carbody, the static load test under vertical load has been conducted. From the test, the vertical deflection an겨 cross sectional deformation of the carbody were analysed and measured. The maximum deflection along the side sill was 9.25mm in the experiment and 8.28mm in the analysis. The maximum cross sectional deformation was measured 5.42mm at carbody center in lateral direction and 4.06mm at roof center in vertical direction.

  • Impedance analysis of a Solenoid sensor to detect the cross-sectional area of non-ferromagnetic stranded conductors is described in this paper. To inspect electromagnetic characteristics of conductive materials, a nondestructive test eddy current sensor with an encircling coil is chosen. As solving Maxwell equation, normalized impedance response of the sensor within a conducting rod is modeled and the results are expanded to the stranded wires. Geometrical property affecting on stranded structure is considered and a numerical and experimental study is also presented.

  • To predict strain distributions and weld line movements in the forming processes of tailored blank sheets, the 2-dimensional finite element formulation is developed. The welding zone is modelled with the several, narrow finite elements. The material properties of weld elements are calculated from those of base metals, based on the experimental evaluation. To verify the finite element formulation developed, the forming process of an autobody door inner panel section is simulated. FEM predictions are compared and showed good agreements with experimental measurements.

  • Design strength of structural members could be determined by applying a strength reduction factor to nominal strength. At the beginning point of the transition region for the strength reduction factor, P=0.1$\sigma$$_{ck}A_g$, only sectional area and concrete strength are adopted as the variables of P=0.1$\sigma$$_{ck}A_g$. Therefore, P=0.1$\sigma$$_{ck}A_g$ is the empirically adopted which does not consider steel ratio, steel yielding stress, and steel arrangement. So, this research was perpormed the computer program for the analysis of axial force-moment-curvature relationship of reinforced concrete columns by sectional behaviour nonlinear analysis using a concrete compressive stress-strain curve, in order to investigate the ductility of reinforced concrete columns. As a result, ductility indicies of axial force, P=0.1$\sigma$$_{ck}A_g$, represented the lack of consistency of the indicies value for the various sections.

  • This paper presents basis functions for curvilinear square elements and describes finite element analysis for coaxial cable and coaxial cross-section waveguide. On the case of coaxial cable, the more exact results is obtained by the propotional elements than by the equal elements with the same number of elements. It is found that the cutoff frequency of coaxial cross-sectional waveguide is more dependent on the inner and outer radius than the cross-sectional angle.

  • This paper deals with the free vibration analysis of horizontally circular mea beams with variable cross sectional width on elastic foundations. Taking into account the effects of rotatory inertia and shear deformation differential equations governing the free vibrations of such beams are derived, in which the Whlkler foundation model is considered as the elastic foundation. The variable width of beam is chosen as the linear equation. The differential equations are solved numerically to calculate natural frequencies. In numerical examples, the curved beam with the hinged-hinged, hinged-clamped, clamped-hinged and damped-clamped end constraints are considered The parametric studies are conducted and the lowest four frequency parameters are reported in figures as the non-dimensional forms.

  • In this study, the safest model can be selected by the simulation result of structural safety analysis according to the shape of impact bar affected at side door of automobile. The open sectional model of semicircle type has the lowest deformation and stress among 4 kinds of models. As the weight of this model has 30% in comparison with other models, it becomes most economical and stable. As the open sectional model of cap type the highest deformation and stress among 4 kinds of models, it becomes weakest. The closed models with circular and rectangular types has the stress far lower than cap type. The maximum deformation is shown at the center part of impact bar but the maximum stress occurs at the joint part between impact bar and frame.

  • A computational analysis has been made on fluid flow in a regenerative cooling Passage for a reduced size liquid rocket engine to predict pressure drop and heat transfer rate in it. The contraction/expansion of the cross sectional area of the passage turn out to increases both the pressure loss and the heat transfer rate of the duct. The changes of the cross sectional area near the nozzle throat are effective to protect the throat which suffers from severe thermal load. Also given is the qualitative characteristics of the performance of the regenerative cooling system due to the variation of coolant flow rate.
