  • Root cluster section culture, showing high efficient Protocorm-like body (PLB) formation capacity, were established in Doritaenopsis hybrids. Three types of root were obtained from excised shoots in 1/2MS medium containing different concentrations of NAA; \circled1normal roots, \circled2multiple roots and \circled3abnormal root clusters. Those were placed on 1/2MS medium supplemented with 0.5 mg/L thidiazuron for PLB regeneration. PLB regeneration rate was greater in root cluster section cultures (77.8%) compare to normal root tip cultures(30%). Number of PLBs regenerated from root cluster sections were counted over 11 per explant (5.3 per normal root tip).High frequency of PLB regeneration was achieved in root cluster section culture. This result can be used as an efficient method for clonal proliferation of Doritaenopsis hybrids.

  • The ages of sandfish, Arctoscopus japoninis sampled from the eastern sea of Korea, were determined by the transverse section method of otoliths. Ages were assigned to every individual according to the number of opaque zones, and then fitted to the von Bertalanffy growth equation. Estimated equations were $L_t=25.90(1-e^{-0.2976(t+0.4447)})$ for females and $L_t=21.38(1-e^{-0.2917(t+1.2087)})$ for males, where t is age (year) and $L_t$, is body length (mm) at age t. These two equations were significantly different and the body length of females calculated from the equation was larger than that of males except at 1 year old.

  • A study of the bending-extension-transverse shear coupled random response of the composite beams with thin-walled open sections subjected to various types of concentrated and distributed random excitations is dealt with in this paper. First of all, equations of motion of thin-walled composite H-type cross-section beams incorporating a number of nonclassical effects of transverse shear and primary and secondary warping, and anisotropy of constituent materials are derived. On the basis of derived equations of motion, analytical expressions for the displacement response of the composite beams are derived by using normal mode method combined with frequency response function method.

  • There are many theoretical investigations to analyze higher order mode of reactive type single expansion chambers with offset inlet/outlet locations. But the conventional method has the restriction that the ratio between the area of inlet(or outlet) pipe and that of chamber must be natural number. In the paper, a new method was suggested to apply the Kim's method to silencer with circular cross-section. Not only the offset location but also the magnitude of cross-section area of inlet/outlet pipe can be considered by the suggested method. The predictions by this new method also compared with those by the finite element method and Munjal's method in order to verify the accuracy of the suggested method presented here.

  • The marked increase in the number of environmental problems, combined with the increase in their intensity and spatial extent, has resulted in an ever-increasing need for constant monitoring. This is complicated by the occurrence of new and complicated environmental issues that often prevent a thorough understanding of the entire monitoring framework. In the present study, a diagrammatic method was developed to present the entire framework of a monitoring plan. The diagram was separated into three sections- "Problem Section", "Research Process and Data Section" and "Entities Section" - to clearly present the disparate relationships between monitoring objectives and the monitoring procedure. Notation of the diagrams was undertaken using Unified Modeling Language (UML). A hypothetical monitoring plan for an environmental problem was designed to assess usefulness of the diagrammatic method. The diagram was capable of reviewing and revising the monitoring plan and could be used to select a monitoring procedure according to the monitoring objectives of the plan. The results suggested that this diagrammatic method was effective for designing an appropriate monitoring plan for a given monitoring objective.

  • Five different poplar hybrids were tested for rescuing embryo to elongate in vitro plantiets after hybridization. Ovaries and ovules were cultured on Woody Plant Medium (WPM) supplemented with cytokinins, 6-benzylamine (BA) and zeatin. Multiple shoots were initiated from half section of capsule with immature embryos after 21 days from pollination and tiny shoots were formed after the expansion of cotyledons in ovule cultures. Germinating response was better in intraspecific hybrids $(6.53\pm1.66)$ than interspecific crosses $(0.93\pm0.54)$ from half section of capsules on WPM medium. In general, zeatin was better than BA in inducing multiple shoots from isolated ovules. The highest average number $(19.40\pm4.53)$ of shoots was produced from immature ovules of 21 days post-pollination of WPM medium supplemented with 5.0 mg/L zeatin. The highest percentage of germination was 93% from the half section of in vitro ovary cultures. Soil acclimation was successfully conducted in cell tray containing artificially mixed soil with 96% survival rate.

  • Steel structural elements with web-tapered I cross section, are usually made of welded thin plates. Due to the nonrectangular shape of the element, thin web section may be obtained at the maximum cross section height. The buckling strength is directly influenced by lateral restraining, end support and initial imperfections. If no lateral restraints, or when they are not effective enough, the global behaviour of the members is characterized by the lateral torsional mode and interaction with sectional buckling modes may occur. Actual design codes do not provide a practical design approach for this kind of elements. The paper summarizes an experimental study performed by the authors on a relevant number of elements of this type. The purpose of the work was to evaluate the actual behaviour of the web tapered beam-columns when applying different types of lateral restraints and different web thickness.

  • The response analysis of frame structure with open section beams considering warping conditions and short duration load have been performed. When a beam of frame structure is subjected under torsional moment, the cross section will deform a warping as well as twist. For some thin-walled sections warping will be large, and accompanying warping restraint will induce axial and shear stresses and reduce the twist of beam which stiffens the beam in torsion. Because of impact or blast loads, the wave propagation effects become increasingly important as load duration decreases. This paper presents that a warping restraint in finite element model effects the behavior of beam deformation, dynamic mode shape and response analysis. The computer modelling of frame is discussed in linear beam element model and linear thin shell element model, also presents a correlation between computer predicted and actual experimental results for static deflection, natural frequencies and mode shapes of frame. A method to estimate the number of normal modes that are important is discussed.

  • The use of underground transmission tables has continuously increased in densely inhabited urban and suburban area. Due to a increasing demand of underground cables, two or more circuits are installed in parallel for several kilometers. It, however, has not been realized that the sheath circulating current is generated in the system where a large number of cables are laid in the same route. In this paper, Author studied diversely the sheath circulating current on underground cables depending on the various length rate, the phase arrangement, and the grounding resistance of the sheath in the cross-bonded section. It was clear that very large circulating current is generated in cable systems due to unbalanced length rate and phase arrangement in the cross-bonded section.

  • This paper presents the structural behavior of CFRP (carbon fiber reinforced polymer) strengthened CFT (concrete-filled steel tubes) columns under axial loads. Circular and square specimens were selected to investigate the retrofitting effects of CFRP sheet on CFT columns. Test parameters are cross section of CFT, D/t (B/t) ratios, and the number of CFRP layers. The load and ductility capacities were evaluated for each specimen. Structural behavior comparisons of circular and rectangular section will be represented in the experimental result discussion section. Finally, ultimate load formula of CFRP strengthened CFT will be proposed to calculate the ultimate strength of CFRP strengthened circular CFT. The prediction values are in good agreement with the test results obtained in this study and in the literature.
