  • In order to estimate the tooth-age by degree of attrition, the author has studied 605 stone models from 1996 to 1997. All of the attrition were classified and analyzed by 8 degrees. The result were as follows : 1. The degree of attrition in male was higher than that in female for same age group and especially, canine and first premolar showed the most prominent difference in sex. 2. The most severe attrition in posterior teeth was first molar followed by second molar, first premolar and second premolar in decreasing order of sequence. 3. The coefficient of correlation and relation equations by the degree of attrition were obtained.

  • We describe the implementation of a multi-dimensional numerical code to solve the equations for idea! magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) in cylindrical geometry. It is based on an explicit finite difference scheme on an Eulerian grid, called the Total Variation Diminishing (TVD) scheme, which is a second-order-accurate extension of the Roe-type upwind scheme. Multiple spatial dimensions are treated through a Strang-type operator splitting. Curvature and source terms are included in a way to insure the formal accuracy of the code to be second order. The constraint of a divergence-free magnetic field is enforced exactly by adding a correction, which involves solving a Poisson equation. The Fourier Analysis and Cyclic Reduction (FACR) method is employed to solve it. Results from a set of tests show that the code handles flows in cylindrical geometry successfully and resolves strong shocks within two to four computational cells. The advantages and limitations of the code are discussed.

  • The time-dependent behavior of nonequilibrium condensation of moist air through the Ludwieg tube is investigated with a computational fluid dynamics(CFD) method. The two-dimensional, compressible, Navier-Stokes equations, fully coupled with the condensate droplet growth equations, are numerically solved by a third-order MUSCL type TVD finite-difference scheme, with a second-order fractional time step. Baldwin-Lomax turbulence model is employed to close the governing equations. The computational results are compared with the previous experiments using the Ludwieg tube with a downstream diaphragm. The results clearly show that for an initial relative humidity below 30% there is no periodic oscillation of the condensation shock wave, but for an initial relative humidity over 40% the periodic excursions of the condensation shock occurs in the Ludwieg tube, and the frequency increases with the initial relative humidity. It is also found that total pressure loss due to nonequilibrium condensation in the Ludwieg tube should not be ignored even for a very low initial relative humidity, and the periodic excursions of the condensation shock wave are responsible for the total pressure loss.

  • The time-dependent behavior of unsteady condensation of moist air through the Ludwieg tube is investigated by using a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) work. The predicted results are compared with the previous experiments using the Ludwieg tube with a diaphragm downstream. The present computations represent the experimental flows well. The time-dependent unsteady condensation characteristics are discussed based upon the present predicted results. The results obtained clearly show that for an initial relative humidity below 30% there is no periodic oscillation of the condensation shock wave, but for an initial relative humidity over 40% the periodic excursions of the condensation shock occurs in the Ludwieg tube, and the frequency increases with the initial relative humidity. It is also found that total pressure loss due to unsteady condensation in the Ludwieg tube should not be ignored even for a very low initial relative humidity and it results from the periodic excursions of the condensation shock wave.

  • The three-dimensional Euler equations are solved numerically for the analysis of contraction flows in wind or water tunnels. A second-order finite difference method is used for the spatial discretization on the nonstaggered grid system and the 4-stage Runge-Kutta scheme for the numerical integration in time. In order to speed up the convergence, the local time stepping and the implicit residual-averaging schemes are introduced. The pressure field is obtained by solving the pressure-Poisson equation with the Neumann boundary condition. For the evaluation of the present Euler solver, numerical computations are carried out for three contraction geometries, one of which was adopted in the Large Cavitation Channel for the U.S. Navy. The comparison of the computational results with the available experimental data shows good agreement.

  • Motivated by [Science in China (Ser. A Mathematics) 36 (2006), no. 7, 721?732], this article deals with the following discrete type BVP $\LARGE\left\{{{\;{\Delta}[{\phi}({\Delta}x(n))]\;+\;f(n,\;x(n\;+\;1),{\Delta}x(n),{\Delta}x(n + 1))\;=\;0,\;n\;{\in}\;[0,N],}}\\{\;{x(0)-{\sum}^m_{i=1}{\alpha}_ix(n_i) = A,}}\\{\;{x(N+2)-\;{\sum}^m_{i=1}{\beta}_ix(n_i)\;=\;B.}}\right.$ The sufficient conditions to guarantee the existence of at least three positive solutions of the above multi-point boundary value problem are established by using a new fixed point theorem obtained in [5]. An example is presented to illustrate the main result. It is the purpose of this paper to show that the approach to get positive solutions of BVPs by using multifixed-point theorems can be extended to treat nonhomogeneous BVPs. The emphasis is put on the nonlinear term f involved with the first order delta operator ${\Delta}$x(n).

  • This study is concerned with development of 3-Dimensional simulator of a biped robot that has a prismatic balancing weight or a revolute balancing weight. The dynamic stability equation of a biped robot which have a prismatic balancing weight is conditional linear but a walking robot's stability equation with a revolute balancing weight is nonlinear. To get a stable gait of a biped robot, stabilization equations with ZMP (Zero Moment Point) are modeled as non-homogeneous second order differential equations for each balancing weight type. A trajectory of balancing weight can be directly calculated with the FDM (Finite Difference Method) solution of the linearized differential equation. In this paper, the 3-Dimensional graphic simulator is programmed to get and calculate the desired ZMP and the actual ZMP. Walking of 4 steps was simulated and verified. This balancing system will be applied to a biped humanoid robot, which consist Begs and upper body, at future work.

  • A numerical study of a hemodynamical model for the tumor angiogenesis is carried out. The tumor angiogenesis process is comprised of a sequence of events; secretion of tumor angiogenesis factor(TAF) from the solid tumor, degradation of the basement membrane of nearby blood vessels, migration and proliferation of the endothelial cells. The model takes into account the effect of TAF concentration and endothelial cell density, and their conservation equations are represented as a set of one-dimensional initial boundary value problems. These equations are discretized by using a finite difference method in which the second order schemes both in time and in space are used. The effects of the parameters contained in the model are Investigated extensively through the numerical simulation of the discretized model. The result for the typical case compares very well with the known result.

  • An Euler solver is developed to predict accurate aerodynamic data such as lift coefficient, drag coefficient, and moment coefficient. The conservation law form of the compressible Euler equations are used in the generalized curvilinear coordinates system. The Euler solver uses a finite volume method and the second order Roe's flux difference splitting scheme with min-mod flux limiter to calculate the fluxes accurately. An implicit scheme which includes the boundary conditions is implemented to accelerate the convergence rate. The multi-block grid is integrated into the flow solver for complex geometry. The flowfields are analyzed around NACA 0012 airfoil in the cases of $M_{\infty}=0.75,\;\alpha=2.0\;and\;M_{\infty}=0.80,\;\alpha=1.25$. The numerical results are compared with other numerical results from the literature. The final goal of this research is to prepare a robust and an efficient Navier-Stokes solver eventually.
