Diagnostic performance of artificial intelligence using cone-beam computed tomography imaging of the oral and maxillofacial region: A scoping review and meta-analysis

  • Purpose: The aim of this study was to conduct a scoping review and meta-analysis to provide overall estimates of the recall and precision of artificial intelligence for detection and segmentation using oral and maxillofacial cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) scans. Materials and Methods: A literature search was done in Embase, PubMed, and Scopus through October 31, 2022 to identify studies that reported the recall and precision values of artificial intelligence systems using oral and maxillofacial CBCT images for the automatic detection or segmentation of anatomical landmarks or pathological lesions. Recall (sensitivity) indicates the percentage of certain structures that are correctly detected. Precision (positive predictive value) indicates the percentage of accurately identified structures out of all detected structures. The performance values were extracted and pooled, and the estimates were presented with 95% confidence intervals(CIs). Results: In total, 12 eligible studies were finally included. The overall pooled recall for artificial intelligence was 0.91 (95% CI: 0.87-0.94). In a subgroup analysis, the pooled recall was 0.88 (95% CI: 0.77-0.94) for detection and 0.92 (95% CI: 0.87-0.96) for segmentation. The overall pooled precision for artificial intelligence was 0.93 (95% CI: 0.88-0.95). A subgroup analysis showed that the pooled precision value was 0.90 (95% CI: 0.77-0.96) for detection and 0.94 (95% CI: 0.89-0.97) for segmentation. Conclusion: Excellent performance was found for artificial intelligence using oral and maxillofacial CBCT images.

  • Many recent British novels engage with the construction and deconstruction of history and identity; and in dealing with these historical, or historicised novels it seems to be an untouchable ground that truth is beyond grasp. Even when approached, its authenticity should be examined under the post-modern "incredulity toward metanarrative" discourses. Julian Barnes's 1998 novel England, England may be one of these. Yet, unlike others it achieves a complicated and controversial status as a new kind of historiographic metafiction by providing selfconscious reflections on the invention of innocence and the questionable notion of historical authenticity against the background of current postmodern historical, cultural, and literary explorations. The book, set in a near-future, namely post-post-modern England, starts with a story of a young girl, Martha Cochrane, whose first memory goes back to her early infantile years. Yet, the narrator comments that it is a lie, "her first artfully, innocently arranged lie," since memory, or history, is a product of identity, and vice versa. Her memory of the jigsaw puzzle is both a reminiscent and a significant component of who she is now, both a simulacrum and the original of herself. The correlation between her individual memory and identity parallels that of a region, England, in formation of its history and nationality. "England, England" is the replicated miniature of the former glorious Kingdom as well as a becoming der Ding an sich (the thing itself). In search of the English history and identity, the author satirizes the modern mind's perception of the unreliability and arbitrariness of memory and history, and further explores the alternative to the postmodern discourses by suggesting the probability of inventing innocence glimpsed in children's face "believing while disbelieving." In doing so, the author reconstructs not only the history of Englishness on the ground where nothing seems to be solid, but more importantly also the postmodern theme of relativity in relation to memory, history and identity.

Science, Commerce, and Imperial Expansion in British Travel Literature: Hugh Clifford's and Joseph Conrad's Malay Fiction

  • Conrad's novels, specifically the Lingard Trilogy-Almayer's Folly, An Outcast of the Islands, and The Rescue-and Lord Jim, set in the Southeast Asian or Malay Archipelago can be considered travel literature that played a significant role in British imperial expansion. Conrad's Malay novels were based not only on his experience in the region during his commercial journey but also on information from earlier travel writings about the Malays and their customs, including James Brooke's journals. The English traders in Conrad's novels, namely Lingard and Jim, were partly modeled on Brooke, the White Rajah, who founded and ruled the English colony on the northwest of Borneo in the 1840s. The white traders in Conrad's novels, who act as enlightened rulers, represent the British commercial expansionism, which was obscured by the phenomenon of the civilizing mission in the late nineteenth century. On the other hand, the colonial official Clifford's tales and novels about British Malaya demonstrate the typical travel accounts of the late nineteenth century that stress the civilizing mission over commercial exploitation. The concept of the enlightening mission was rooted in evolutionary anthropological thinking, which developed as part of the natural history in the early nineteenth century. In fact, the development of natural history, stimulating British expansion in search of commercially exploitable resources and lands, enabled travel writing as the collection of natural knowledge to become a profitable business. In Conrad, the white characters are mainly traders acting as colonial rulers, while in Clifford, they are scientific rulers with their commercial interests rarely apparent. In sum, Conrad's novels reveal that the new imperialism of the civilizing mission is still a commercial one, which disturbs rather than contributes to the imperial expansion-in contrast to other travel literature such as Clifford's.

GWAS of Salt Tolerance and Drought Tolerance in Korean Wheat Core Collection

  • Abiotic stress is a major problem in global agriculture as it negatively affects crop growth, yield, and quality. Wheat (Triticum aestivum) is the world's second-highest-producing food resource, so the importance of mitigating damage caused by abiotic stress has been emerging. In this study, we performed GWAS to search for SNPs associated with salt tolerance and drought tolerance. NaCl (200 mM) treatment was performed at the seedling stage using 613 wheat varieties in Korean wheat core collection. Root length, root surface area, root average diameter, and root volume were measured. Drought stress was applied at the seedling stage, and the above phenotypes were measured. GW AS was performed for each phenotype data using the MLM, MLMM, and FarmCPU models. The best salt-tolerant wheat varieties were 'MK2402', 'Gyeongnam Geochang-1985-3698', and 'Milyang 13', showing superior root growth. The significant SNP AX-94704125 (BA00756838) were identified in all models. The genes closely located to the significant SNP were searched within ± 250 kb of the corresponding SNP. A total of 11 genes were identified within the region. NB-ARC involved in the defense response, FKSI involved in cell wall biosynthesis, and putative BP Ml involved in abiotic stress responses were discovered in the 11 genes. The best drought-tolerant wheat varieties were 'PI 534284', 'Moro of Sind', and 'CM92354-33M-0Y-0M-6Y-0B-0BGD', showing superior root growth. This study discovered SNPs associated with salt tolerance in Korean wheat core collection through GWAS. GWAS of drought tolerance is now proceeding, and the GWAS results will be represented on a poster. The SNPs identified by GWAS can be useful for studying molecular mechanisms of salt tolerance and drought tolerance in wheat.

  • Silver barb (Barbonymus gonionotus) is among the most economically important freshwater fish species in Thailand. It ranks fourth in economic value and third in production weight for fisheries and culture in Thailand. An XX/XY sex-determination system based on gynogenesis was previously reported for this fish. In this study, the molecular basis underlying the sex-determination system was further investigated. Genome-wide single-nucleotide polymorphism data were generated for 32 captive-bred silver barb individuals, previously scored by phenotypic sex, to identify sex-linked regions associated with sex determination. Sixty-three male-linked loci, indicating putative XY chromosomes, were identified. Male-specific loci were not observed, which indicates that the putative Y chromosome is young and the sex determination region is cryptic. A homology search revealed that most male-linked loci were homologous to the Mariner/Tc1 and Gypsy transposable elements and are probably the remnants of an initial accumulation of repeats on the Y chromosome from the early stages of sex chromosome differentiation. This research provides convincing insights into the mechanism of sex determination and reveals the potential sex determination regions in silver barb. The study provides the basic data necessary for increasing the commercial value of silver barbs through genetic improvements.

공간자료를 활용한 멸종위기종 저어새(Platalea minor)의 적합 번식지 분석 연구 (Analysis of Suitable Breeding Sites for Endangered species Black-faced Spoonbill(Platalea minor) using spatial data)

  • This study analyzed potential breeding sites for black-faced spoonbills on 70 non-breeding, uninhabited islands in Incheon, Korea, in order to suggest potential breeding sites for black-faced spoonbills, whose breeding population has recently been increasing. By comparing the environmental characteristics of breeding and non-breeding areas identified through a literature search, we developed a discriminant to identify potential breeding areas for black-faced spoonbills. Among a total of eight environmental variables(Island area, distance from land, distance to mudflat, distance to rice field, distance to sea route, depth of water, mudflat area, rice field area), the variables that influenced the selection of breeding sites for black-faced spoonbills were average water depth, tidal flat area, and paddy field area. As a result of discriminant analysis of breeding islands using these variables, the accuracy was found to be quite high at 80%. As a result of applying the developed discriminant to non-breeding islands located in the Incheon region, a total of 9 islands(Yongrando, Goseokdo, Beolyeom, Joreumseom, Goeriseom, Hambakdo, Moido, Bigajido, Ahyeom) were identified as potential breeding grounds for spoonbills. The research results can be used as basic data for future management of black-faced spoonbill breeding sites and selection of alternative habitats.

Molecular identification of fruit bats, natural host of Nipah virus in Bangladesh, based on DNA barcode

  • Background: Fruit bats are natural carriers of Nipah virus (NiV). The primary objective of this study is to identify potential reservoir species in a selected geographic regions. It is necessary to determine an accurate species identification of the associated reservoir bat species distributed in a specific region. Results: In this study, we collected 20 different bat specimens from the NiV-prone area of the Kushtia district. Among these, 14 were tissue samples (BT-1-14) and six were fecal samples (BF-1-6). We used the mitochondrial gene cytochrome b, one of the most abundant and frequently used genetic markers, for polymerase chain reaction amplification and sequencing. Out of the 20 samples, 12 tissue samples and 2 fecal samples were successfully amplified and sequenced. However, two tissue samples and four fecal samples yielded chimeric sequences, rendering them unsuitable for annotation. The sequences of the successfully amplified samples were compared to those deposited in the National Center for Biotechnology Information database using basic local alignment search tool to identify the bat specimen collected. The study identified six different bat species using both morphological and genetic data, which may carriers of the NiV. Conclusions: Our results suggest that additional research should be conducted to gather more information on fruit bats from different localities across the country. The study contributes to the establishment of appropriate measures for NiV carrying disease control and management.

영양흐름모형을 이용한 1994년 신지도 해양생태계 해석 (Analysis of Sinjido Marine Ecosystem in 1994 using a Trophic Flow Model)

  • 1994년 신지도 해양생태계에서 관측된 자료를 이용 Ecopath 영양흐름 모델을 구축하였다. 모델은 생체량과 먹이 조성 자료를 이용하여 우점종의 개체군 역학, 주요 영양흐름의 경로, 생태적 특성을 해석하여 다른 해양 생태계와 비교하였다. 계를 구성하는 그룹은 17개로서 해조류, 식물플랑크톤, 동물플랑크톤, 복족류, 다모류, 이매패류, 극피동물, 갑각류, 두족류, 망둑어, 양태, 홍어, 보구치, 베도라치, 장어, 가자미 및 유기쇄설물을 포함한다. 실험결과 영양단계는 일차생산자와 유기쇄설물로부터 최고 소비자인 가자미 그룹에 이르기까지 1.0~4.0의 범위를 보였다. 계의 총생체량(B)은 0.1 $kgWW/m^2$, 총순일차생산량(PP)과 총통과흐름(TST)은 각기 1.6, 3.4 $kgWW/m^2/yr$이며, TST는 총소비 7%, 총이출 43%, 총호흡(TR) 4%, 총유기쇄설물전환 46%의 합으로 구성된다. PP/TR은 0.012, PP/B는 0.015, 잡식지수는 0.12, 핀순환지수는 0.7%, 평균경로거리는 2.15, 지배용량(A)과 발전용량(C)은 각기 4.1과 8.2 $kgWW/m^2/yr$ bits이며, 상대지배용량(A/C)은 51%를 보였다. 특히 본 연구는 영양상호영향 해석에서 간접적인 경로를 통한 영향을 4가지 형태로 구분하여 기술하였다. 총통과흐름 기운데 총이출이 높은 것은 계가 반폐쇄된 만과 다르게 물질 교환이 크다는 의미이며, 연구해역이 신지도, 조약도, 생일도로 둘러싸인 수로를 통해 강한 조류가 미치는 지역임을 보아 쉽게 알 수 있다. 생태계 이론 및 순환지수 가운데 총생체량, 총통과흐름, PP/TR, 핀순환지수, 평균경로 거리, 잡식지수는 비교적 낮게 산출되었는데, 이는 오덤의 이론에 따라 계가 충분히 성숙하지 못한 근거로 해석되었고, 정보지수인 상대지배용량이 크게 산출된 것은 계가 최대로 발전할 수 있는 용량이 작다는 것으로 해석되었다. 이상의 결과로 보아 연구해역은 영양물질의 외부 유출이 커 계가 발전할 수 있는 가능성은 한정되고 현재 발전하고 있는 단계인 것으로 판단되었다. 본 연구는 신지도 해양생태계의 영양흐름 구조와 생태계 특성을 해석한 시험연구로서 향후 생태계의 변화를 비교하거나 관리에 유용할 것으로 판단된다.

한국인 비증후군성 구순구개열 환자의 OFC1 유전자의 서열 분석 (Sequencing analysis of the OFC1 gene on the nonsyndromic cleft lip and palate patient in Korean)

  • 비증후군성 구순구개열을 발생시키는 주요유전자로 추측이 되는 OFC1 유전자(위치 염색체 6p24.3)의 한국인에서 나타나는 특성을 연구하였다. 3대에 걸쳐서 처음으로 비증후군성 구순구개열이 나타난 40 명의 환자(남자 20명, 여자 20명, 평균 나이 : 14.2세)와 3대에 걸쳐서 비증후군성 구순구개열을 포함한 어떤 선천성 기형도 나타나지 않았던 정상 성인 40명 (남자 20명, 여자 20명, 평균 나이 : 25.6세)을 연구 대상으로 하였다. 중합효소 연쇄 반응법을 이용하여 OFC1 유전자를 분리 증폭한 후, 염기 서열 분석을 통해서 대립유전자형을 밝히고, BLAST 와 Pedant-Pro 데이터베이스를 이용하여 단백질의 상동성 검색을 수행하였으며, 그 결과는 다음과 같다. 1. OFC1 유전자는 'CA' 연쇄반복서열을 가진 극소위성 표지자로 밝혀졌다. 2. 환자군과 대조군의 OFC1 유전자의 특별한 차이는 발견되지 않았다. 3. 한국인에서 나타난 'CA' 연쇄반복서열의 형태는 'ABI linkage map 2'의 TA(CA)11TA(CA)10과는 달리, TA(CA)n의 형태를 띄었으며, 연쇄반복의 수는 17회에서 26회로 다양하게 나타났다. 4. 'CA' 연쇄반복서열의 횟수에 따라서, 9가지의 대립유전자형이 발견되었으며, 나타나는 빈도는 환자군과 대조군에서 유사하였다. 5. 'ABI linkage map 2'의 'CA' 연쇄반복서열 사이의 염기서열 T가 한국인에서는 C로 치환되어 있었지만, ORF예측을 하였을 때 예상되는 아미노산의 배열 차이는 관찰되지 않았다. 6. 한국인 OFC1 유전자의 염기서열로 예측되는 단백질을 알아보기 위하여 BLAST 검색을 한 결과, Telomerase reverse transcriptase(TERT, locus 5p15.33, NCBI Genome Annotation ; NT023089)와 Nucleotide binding protein 2(NBP2, locus 17q22, NCBI Genome Annotation; NT010783)가 유사한 구조를 가지는 단백질로 밝혀졌다. 7. Pedant-Pro 데이터베이스로 단백질 구조의 상동성 검색을 한 결과, OFC1 유전자는 적어도 하나의 transmembrane region과 non-gloular region을 가지는 구조로 밝혀졌다.

표고균사 갈변과 관련된 BCR (Brown Color Repressor) 유전자 분리 (BCR (Brown Color Repressor) gene isolation related to mycelial browning of Lentinus edodes)

  • 표고균사에서 갈변시기를 조절하고 확인할 수 있는 유전공학적 시스템을 개발하여 톱밥재배용 표고균주를 조기에 선별할 수 있도록 표고균사가 갈변되는 동안 균사상태에서 특이적으로 발현되는 유전자를 분리하기 위하여 갈변되지 않은 균사와 갈변이 완전히 이루어진 균사에서 differential display를 실시하였다. 그 결과 이들 균사로부터 특이적으로 발현되는 두 개의 1.6kb와 1.2kb의 cDNA clone을 선발하여 염기서열을 분석하였다. 이 중 1.6kb의 cDNA단편은 Dugenia polichroa로부터 분리된 microsatellites 유전자와 100%의 상동성을 나타냈다. 그러나 1.2kb의 cDNA 단편은 3'부위에 poly A tail과 5 부위에 partial open reading frame를 가지고 있어 이를 primer로 제작한 후 갈변되지 않은 균사와 갈변이 이루어진 균사에서 RT-PCR을 실시하여 본 결과 갈변이 되지 않은 백색의 균사에서 발현이 확인되었다. 1.2kb의 cDNA 단편의 5' 부위의 염기서열 분석은 110개의 아미노산으로 구성된 partial open reading frame으로 나타났다. 이 유전자를 DNASIS database에서 상동성을 비교해 본 결과 Arabidopsis thaliata에서 분리된 dTDP-glucose 4,6-dehydratases 유전자와 DNA 수준에서는 66.7%, 아미노산 수준에서는 69.2%의 높은 상동성을 나타내었다. 갈변에 관련된 특이 유전자(BCR gene)를 확인하였다. 이 유전자는 산화 stress에 대해 저항성을 나타내는 기능을 가진 것으로 알려져 있어 표고 균사가 갈변될 때 repressor로서 작용할 것으로 생각된다. 따라서 이 유전자를 BCR (Brown Color Repressor) 유전자라고 명명하였다.
