While the amount of information exchanged through internet has dramatically increased recently, certain inefficiencies still exist with regard to the storage, distribution, and retrieval of information. As a means of improving efficiency in accessing information, many search portals provide directory services to present organized guidance to information, based on the classification schemes. This study examines the classification activities practiced by the major search portals in Korea and makes some suggestions to improve the quality of directory services.

With the rapid distribution and active usage of the Internet, information search and retrieval through Internet has become a primary form of information access. This ubiquity of information access through Internet means the increased significance of search performance offered by Internet portals, since the optimization of search performance by portal has strong implication for the effective access of information through Internet in general. In this context, this paper investigates the classification scheme used in the directory service of internet portals, which provides selected and organized access to Internet information. First, the author analyzes the deployment of directory classification of standard subdivision topics used in traditional library classification system, with emphasis on the table composed of the form and approach, which are applicable to diverse subject areas. Then, based on this analysis, he proposed a method of applying certain subdivisions of the standard subdivision to directory service of Internet portals.

Purpose: This study aims to understand if heterogeneous news is evenly consumed and distributed on portals as it examines people's news use and engagement behaviors and news credibility. Focusing on the four behaviors of news use, i.e., viewing news by keyword search, viewing news from subscribed sources, viewing news from the list of most-viewed news, and reading comments, and the three behaviors of news engagement, i.e., sharing news, 'liking' or 'recommending' news, and posting comments, this study investigates the relation between each of the behaviors and portal news credibility. Research design, data and methodology: From 2022 News Audience Survey in Korea, this study conducts a regression analysis to investigate the relations between each behavior and news credibility. Results: The results show a positive relation for the former two news use behaviors and the latter two news engagement behaviors, and a negative relation for the latter two news use behaviors. Conclusions: The positive relations between active news use and engagement behaviors and portal news credibility indicate that news consumers are more likely to use and engage in attitude-consistent news rather than attitude-challenging news, implying that heterogeneous news is less likely to be consumed and distributed evenly on portals across all news users.

This study suggests evaluation criteria for the web-based question-answer databases provided by major Korean search portals. In particular, this study suggests evaluation criteria for the relevance of question titles, entire questions, and answer's. The evaluation criteria for the qualify of answers are also developed. Based on these criteria. evaluation of documents from Naver Knowledge-in are performed. The results of this study can be implemented to the development of test collection of question-answer databases. The implications for system designers and web content providers are discussed.

Google, an internet search service with extensive user base, has provided Book Search service. Google has pursued collaboration with publishers and libraries to obtain content for Book Search service; publisher community for the purpose of sourcing the books with copyrights, and the libraries for the purpose of digitizing their collections and also utilizing already digitized resources. Google Book Search Service has evoked significant controversy because of the potential monopoly problems and its risk, accompanied by Google's huge influence and broad user spectrum. This study, thus, suggests the countermeasures that library community should prepare in order to cope with the Google Book Search.

This study aims to investigate information seeking behavior of mobile-based Web users, especially, college students. This study also evaluates mobile search services based on various criteria, and suggests how to improve portal's mobile search services. The results of this study show that the most urgent improvement is needed in the contents of mobile search services. Improvements are also required in the area of interface design followed by accessibility and mobile search functionalities. The results of this study can be applied to the portal's effective development of mobile search services.

The demand for e-learning through video lectures is rapidly increasing due to its diverse advantages over the traditional learning methods. This led to massive volumes of web-based lecture videos. Indexing and retrieval of a lecture video or a lecture video topic has thus proved to be an exceptionally challenging problem. Many techniques listed by literature were either visual or audio based, but not both. Since the effects of both the visual and audio components are equally important for the content-based indexing and retrieval, the current work is focused on both these components. A framework for automatic topic-based indexing and search depending on the innate content of the lecture videos is presented. The text from the slides is extracted using the proposed Merged Bounding Box (MBB) text detector. The audio component text extraction is done using Google Speech Recognition (GSR) technology. This hybrid approach generates the indexing keywords from the merged transcripts of both the video and audio component extractors. The search within the indexed documents is optimized based on the Naïve Bayes (NB) Classification and K-Means Clustering models. This optimized search retrieves results by searching only the relevant document cluster in the predefined categories and not the whole lecture video corpus. The work is carried out on the dataset generated by assigning categories to the lecture video transcripts gathered from e-learning portals. The performance of search is assessed based on the accuracy and time taken. Further the improved accuracy of the proposed indexing technique is compared with the accepted chain indexing technique.

This study is to investigate the characteristics of the Invisible Web and many search services designed to serve as gateways to the Invisible Web and to evaluate searching the Invisible Web in the Services. The four services for searching the Invisible Web were selected to search the Invisible Web with 11 queries, that are Google as portals, ProFusion and Search.com as Invisible Web meta search engines, and IncyWincy as Invisible Web search engines. It was found that the effectiveness of Google's Invisible Web searching was better compared with the three Invisible Web search tools but the difference between the four systems was not significant((${\alpha}$=.055) The Invisible Web meta searching was better than the Web meta searching in the three search tools at the statistically significant level. The effectiveness measurement based on the ranks and relevance degree(quality) of relevant documents retrieved seemed appropriate to the ranked search results.

The purpose of this study is aimed to clarify the usefulness of meta search system using Open API of library online catalog by constructing OPAC-based search system using Open API of library online catalog and meta search system using Open API of library online catalog, and comparing the usability of the two experimental search systems. As for usability, on the whole, it was higher in meta search system using Open API of library online catalog than OPAC-based search system using Open API of library online catalog, and there was statistically significant difference. Therefore, if libraries share and use enriched content which is provided through Open API for book search, which is opened by Internet bookstores, search engines and Web portals, it is expected that it will be helpful in enhancing bibliographic data, expanding subject access point, empowering subject search ability, extending meta search service, improving book availability, and reducing catalog cost.

The most widely used information searching method in the current internet environment is the keyword-based one, which has certain limitations in terms of precision and recall. Most major internet portals provide directory-based searching as a means to complement these limitations. However, that they adopt different classification schemes brings significant inconvenience to the users, and it consequently suggests a need to develop mapping gateway to provide cross-portal, or cross-directory information searching. In this context, this study attempts to develop a prototype system of intermediary gateway for integrated search, using the directory services of three major portals, Naver, Yahoo and Empas, and test its performance.
