  • Marine equipment exposed to harsh environments requires not only excellent corrosion resistance but also improvement of physical characteristics against natural material degradation. With growing interests in ocean energy resources, the higher reliability for marine equipment has become more important in terms of material characteristics. ALBC3 alloy represents excellent corrosion resistance and is widely used in corrosive environments. However, cavitation damage occurs frequently due to its poor durability in high flow rate of marine environment. In this research, shot peening technology was employed as a surface modification with shot peening stand-off distance to mitigate cavitation damage. The effects of shot peening on extent of cavitation damage and weight loss were evaluated for both shot peened and non-peened specimens. The results revealed that the application of shot peeing decreased cavitation damage for all experimental conditions in comparison with the non-peened specimens. The optimum stand-off distance was determined to be 10 cm, since more than 35 % of cavitation damage reduction was observed.

  • A steam jet vacuum system that will be implemented in a multi-effect desalination plant is numerically investigated. The objective of this study is to numerically investigate the performance characteristic of the steam jet vacuum system for the sea water distillation process. The effects of design parameter such as nozzle size and converging duct angle are discussed in order to get a better understanding of flow characteristics inside the steam ejector and subsequently pave the way for more optimum designs. The simulation results have been in good agreement with experimental data and have well reproduced the shock train phenomena of the throat region.

  • For the hydrogen liquefaction, the large amount of energy is consumed, because precooling, liquefaction and ortho/para conversion heats should be eliminated. In this paper the basic design and thermal analysis are carried out to reduce the energy consumption by using LNG cold energy for precooling process in hydrogen liquefaction processes. The LNG cold energy utilization for hydrogen precooling enables not only to get energy saving for liquefaction, but to recover the wasted cold energy to sea water at the LNG terminal. The results show that the energy saving rate for liquefaction using LNG cold energy is almost 75% of current industrial hydrogen liquefaction plant. The demand flow-rate of LNG is only 15T/D for 1T/D hydrogen liquefaction.

  • Sympatric sites of type NE and NS of Zacco korean us were found in the upper reaches of many tributaries of the Nakdong and Seomjin rivers, as well as in some streams draining into the South Sea, Korea. In streams where the two types exist together, there was a tendency for individuals of NE to densely populate the upper reaches and those of NS to populate the middle reaches. A habitat-segregation phenomenon was observed in the cohabiting sites. Fishes of NE preferred rapids, whereas fishes of NS preferred slowly flowing or lentic regions. It seemed that the number of NE was proportional to the flow velocity, but NS showed an opposite trend in the cohabiting sites. On the other hand, such tendency was not found in regions where NE and NS exist separately.

  • Current measurements at 3 sections and numerical experiments were carried out in Masan Bay to understand the effect of the wind on the residual currents and pollutant transport. The vertical distribution of horizontal velocities were directly affected by the wind at the depths of 1m and 2m beneath the sea surface. Analysis of the velocity data suggested that changes in the vertical gravitational circulation contributed to the net circulation. The net transport of water through the northern part of the bay was observed to be landward, with wind-induced transport of about 100m super(3)/s. Hence, wind is concluded to be the dominant mechanism driving the net circulation in the northern area of Masan Bay. Numerical experiments are shown that when S wind with 5m/s blew, northern area of the bay was generated the horizontal circulation of clockwise and local gyre. On the contrary of those, N wind made her to the anti-clockwise. In the case of no wind, the tidal residual current(constant flow) is very small or neglected except the bay-mouth. The inflow or outflow pattern of the mouth is considered as the flows generated by tidal residual current only. The distance of wind-induced transport of pollutant was as long as 2 times of no wind during the one tidal period.

  • This paper deals with a stability evaluation of a butterfly valve using the body and disc of a valve seat. The experimental results of a strength evaluation are shown using STS316 stainless steel and spheroidal graphite cast iron (GCD450). The disc material was made from GCD450. The results of the strength analysis are as follows: Ultimate tensile strength 485MPa, Yield strength 370 MPa, Young's modulus $1.1{\times}10^5$, and Poisson's ratio v = 0.28. For the results of the disc analysis, the safety factor was about 4. This shows that a design was derived that satisfied the requirements of structural safety. However, some problems, such as the deflection and deformation of the disc, may occur when the sea water has back flow with a high pressure.

  • The ichthyofauna and passing efficiency of fishways were surveyed in Geumgang estuary from May to October in 2009. The fishes collected were classified into 24 species, 23 genera belonging to 8 families. These 24 species consist of 17 freshwater fish species, 3 migration fish species and 4 peripheral freshwater fish species. Seasonal function of fishways showed the migration from May to June and returning to the reservoir of fishes be washed out to sea when sluice gate open by rainfall in July and August. Most of the fishes catched in fishways moved from middle tide to high tide except for July. Fishes ascended fishways between the middle ebb tide and the ebb tide only July, because small freshwater swim against the fishway for leaching the reservoir through the newly formed flow when the water level at the fishway kept dropping. Small fishes that body length less than 200 mm mainly used gabion type fishways and fishes over 200 mm utilized a cascade type fishways. Based on the total individuals collected, the efficiency of the fishway was 1 % for the anadromous fish and over 80 % for freshwater fish. Therefore, it is concluded that ecological function of the fishway in the Geumgang estuary dike be very important not only for fish migration but also freshwater fishes's returning.

  • The purpose of present study is to find an appropriate hull shape of a container ship which can operate along the coast and through canals. A 200TEU class container ship is designed with dimensional modifications of an existing 140TEU container ship which is a domestic coastwise vessel. For the fore-body shape including bulbous bow. additional modification is done by changing the sectional area curve and frameline shape using the data of series resistance test. The model tests are performed in the towing tank to measure total resistance sinkage and trim of the model. And a finite-difference method based on MAC method is utilized to analyze the flow field around the ships in deep and restricted water. From the result of model test and numerical analysis, the resistance characteristics of the designed hull form are predicted.

  • The Kalina cycle simulation study was carried out for a preliminary design of a geothermal power generation system. The Kalina cycle system can be used for the utilization of a low-temperature heat sources such as geothermal and industrial waste heat that are not hot enough to produce steam. The sea/river water can be considered as a cooling media. A steady-state simulation model was developed to analyze and optimize its performance. The model contains a turbine, a pump, an expansion valve and heat exchangers. The turbine and pump were modelled by an isentropic efficiency, while a condenser, an evaporator and a regenerative heat exchanger were modeled by UA-LMTD method with a counter-flow assumption. The simulation results show that the power generation efficiency over 10% is expected when a heat source and sink inlet temperatures are $100^{\circ}C$ and $10^{\circ}C$ respectively.

  • A two-dimensional numerical analysis is performed for the simulation of intertidal-flat and analysis of hydraulic characteristics during seadike construction in Sae-Man-Keum tidal basin. The shallow water equations are selected as a mathematical model and the Leendertse's ADI scheme is used as the corresponding numerical model. The simulated results of tide and current by the present model agree welt with the experimenta1 results by the hydraulic Lab. or ADC (1989). In the application of the model, the possibility of rapidly varied flow analysis and the introduction of turbulence model required for more accurate hydraulic calculation at closing gap are described. The successive simulation of flooding/drying effects by a modification of the method by Stelling et al. (1986) can easily be used for the intertidal-flat analysis during tidal reclamation.
