  • In an effort to characterize temporal and spatial variability of $PM_{10}$ and to quantitatively estimate contribution of sea salt aerosol to $PM_{10}$ mass in Busan area, twenty four-hour averaged concentration of $PM_{10}$ were measured in two distinct areas, Gwaebeopdong(inland) and Dongsamdong(seashore), Busan for summer and fall, 2007. It was found that sea salt accounted for 2.9% and 9.5% of $PM_{10}$ mass in Gwaebeopdong and Dongsamdong, respectively for the study period, indicating that contribution of sea salt to $PM_{10}$ mass and total ion concentration in seashore area were consistently higher by a factor of three compared to inland area. Temporal analysis suggested that sea salt contributions to $PM_{10}$ in Dongsamdong were higher in summer due to the southerly sea breeze while there was no significant fluctuation of sea salt contribution for the summer and fall months in Gwaebeopdong. Sea salt enrichment factors($EF_{sea}$) of $K^+$ $Ca^{2+}$ and ${SO_4}^{2-}$ (>10) indicated major contributions from anthropogenic sources and EFs of $Mg^{2+}$ and $Cl^-$ exhibited strong association with oceanic origins for both areas.

  • The first 7 years of altimeter data from the TOPEX/POSEIDON (T/P) were analyzed to study the surface circulation and its variability in the East Asian Marginal Seas. Long term averaged T/P sea level time series data where compared with in situ sea level measurements from a float-operated type tide gauge around of south Korea and Japan. T/P data are a large contaminated by 60-day tidal aliasing effect, very near the alias periods of M2 and S2. When this 60-day effect is removed, the data agree well with the tide gauge data with 4.6 cm averaged RMS difference. The T/P derived sea level variability reveals clearly the well-known, strong current-topography such as Kuroshio. The T/P mean sea level of North Pacific (NP) was higher than Yellow Sea (YS) and East Sea (ES). The T/P sea level valibility, with strong eddy and meandaring, was the largest in eastern part of Japan and this variability was mainly due to the influence of bottom topography in Kuroshio Extention area.

  • Seventy-one marine bacteria decomposing sea tangle (Laminaria japonica) into single cell detritus (SCD) were isolated from sea water, sea tangle, sea mustard (Undaria pinnatifida), sea urchin (Anthocidaris crassispina), star fish (Acanthaster planci), and turban cell (Batillus cornutus), among which 14 strains decreased cutting strength of sea tangle and had alginate-degrading activity. Marine bacterium No. 34 isolated from turban cell showed lowest cutting strength of sea tangle, strongest alginate-degrading activity, and produced high content of $5-10\;{\mu}m$ SCD from sea tangle. This strain was identified as Vibrio sp. based on morphological, physiological, and biochemical characteristics and named as Vibrio sp. YKW-34.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of dietary supplementation of sea tangle (Laminaria japonica) on the blood glucose and lipid metabolism in streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetic rats. Male Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into 3 groups fed control, sea tangle powder (15%, w/w), or sea tangle water extract (4%, w/w) diet. Diabetes was induced by a single injection of STZ (60 mg/kg, i.p.) in citrate buffer. The animals were fed each of the experimental diet for 13 weeks. Serum insulin was increased by dietary supplementation of sea tangle in diabetic rats. Dietary sea tangle reduced blood glucose level of diabetic rats compared to the diabetic rats fed control diet. Dietary sea tangle also reduced the serum total cholesterol, low density lipoprotein (LDL)-cholesterol, and triglyceride in the diabetic rats. While hepatic lipids were reduced, fecal excretion of lipids was increased by supplementation with dietary sea tangle in the diabetic rats. These results indicate that dietary sea tangle decreased blood glucose and improved lipid metabolism in STZ-induced diabetic rats and this effect might be exerted by increases in serum insulin and fecal excretion of lipids.

  • This study was designed as a part of efforts to investigate the biochemical pollutant markers for diagnosis of marine pollutions by changes in cholinesterase activity of the mussel (Mytilus coruscus) in South Sea of Korea. Acetylcholinesterase (AChE) activities in muscle of cultured mussels in South Sea were remarkably lower (20∼41%, respectively) than those of wild mussel in Pohang(control) of East Sea. Acetylcholine (Ach) activities in muscle of cultured mussels in South Sea were remarkably lower (15∼30%, respectively) than those of wild mussel in Pohang of East Sea. Monoamineoxidase (MAO-B) activities in muscle of cultured mussels in South Sea were significantly 2∼19% higher than those of wild mussel in Pohang of East Sea. It suggests that AChE, ACh and MAO-B activities in muscle of cultured mussels of South Sea may be used as the most effective mean in a biochemical markers for early warning of environmental damages caused by organophosphorus pesticides.

  • To predict the influence on fish stocks which were caused by environmental change in the fishing ground of shallow sea areas, we have developed the Shallow-Sea Ecological Model(SSEM) which that focuses on living organisms, especially fish and benthos. By applying the SSEM in the Seto-Inland Sea of Japan, we have simulated another aspect of influence on fish stocks that was caused by oxygen deficient water mass and nutrient loads. From the simulated result of the fish stocks, it was indicated that the stock of fish and benthos has shown a relative difference between the western sea and the eastern sea in the Seto-Inland Sea. According the to prediction, results of fish stocks that were caused by oxygen deficient water mass, it was estimated that the pelagicfish stock increases about 6 %, whereas the stocks of demersalfish and benthos decreases about 30% and 70%, respectively. On the other hand, it seemed that there was an increased in the fish stocks of demersalfish and benthos in the eastern sea of Seto-Inland Sea by nutrient loads reduction.

  • A method how to determine the shock response spectrum from the FRF of the statistical energy analysis( SEA ) is presented here. The system of 3 different Plates connected by bolt joints is selected simulating missile structural sections Joined together. First, the SEA model was rendered by SEA parameters which were determined from experimental SEA method. Then, the mobility power was input to the SEA model and we can verify the validity of the model in the medium to high frequency range checking the reproduction of output average velocity. And, the shock induced shock response spectrum(SRS) was obtained using SEA FRF and arbitrarily chosen experimental FRF. We have compared the thus obtained SRS with actually measured SRS and they were relatively in good agreement. In this paper, we used the measured SEA FRF and therefore we have got the SRS well agreed with actually measured SHS even in the low frequency range. If the SEA FRF of well verified SEA model is used, the good result will come out in SEA effective frequency range which is more important at SRS.

  • Korea is surrounded by the West Sea, the South Sea, and the East Sea. There are various points at which large and small rivers flow into the sea, and areas where these rivers meet the coast are vulnerable to disasters. Thus, it is necessary to study disaster prevention techniques based on coastal characteristics and the pattern of disasters. In this study, we analyzed the risk factors of disaster districts analyzed in comprehensive plans for the reduction of damage to coastal cities from storms and floods. As a result of standardization, four factors (tide level, intensive rainfall & typhoon, wave, and tsunami) were identified. Intensive rainfall & typhoon occurred along the West Sea, the South Sea, and the East Sea coast. Factors that should be considered to influence disasters are tide level for the West Sea, tsunami and tide level for the South Sea, and wave in the East Sea. In addition, disaster prevention techniques to address these factors are presented, focusing on domestic and overseas cases.

  • The bioactive secondary metabolites produced by sea cucumbers are very diverse with differences in composition, linkages, molecular weight, and various functional properties. Due to their physicochemical properties, these bioactive molecules in sea cucumbers have found applications in various market segments such as functional foods and cosmetics. Sea cucumber side dishes are a prominent food item in traditional cuisine in East Asian countries such as South Korea, China, and Japan. In addition, many studies have reported that the consumption of sea cucumbers can reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease, the pathogenesis of cancer cells, chronic inflammatory diseases, etc. In particular, many studies have recently reported the potential of sea cucumbers to develop functional products to reduce inflammation, oxidative stress, diabetes, and cancer. Additionally, these bioactive properties associated with sea cucumbers make them ideal compounds for use as functional ingredients in functional food products. However, no report has yet reviewed the properties of sea cucumbers related to functional foods. Therefore, in this review, the primary focus is given to collecting published scientific data (from 2019 to 2023) on the bioactive properties of sea cucumbers relevant to the functional food industry.
